The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

The Trans Siberian railway is a long way. There is no way around it. Our portion of it (by no means the whole length) was 83 hours, 5193 kilometers and 79 stops. At least for this journey we were in second class, which meant only 4 of us in a compartment, a door that we could actually close and beds that were just long enough to fully stretch out. While most of the people on the tour decided to buy whole bunches of food for the journey I bought just enough to get me through the first afternoon and breakfast the [View Full Entry]

Hallo! Only got time for a very quick hello, but just wanted to let you know we're here safe and having a great time. The weather is glorious, and cyrillic is impossible. Ordering non-alcoholic beer has to be a first in Russia! We will make a longer posting when we get the chance and in particular, will be in touch with some of you individually to let you know what we've been up to. Only on a borrowed computer at the hostel at present - but we will attempt to use it again later today. Hope you're all well Sam and [View Full Entry]

Peoples, The first update since my arrival in Moscow last saturday, no worries me and my buddies are doing pretty well in the land of glasnost & perestroijka! Flying to Moscow friday was quite an experience as I was the only traveller who didn't have the russian nationality :) Checking in at the Dublin airport went fairly smooth, even saw a familiar face in the fella who issued my visa a few weeks ago :p random! Anyhoe, S7 airlines flew under 4 hours to Moscow where I landed at 6am. Pretty wasted as I only slept for an hour or so, [View Full Entry]

Yes, Yes, Yes, We did it !!! 9289km by train !!! Finally arrived in Vladivostok ;-) For the second part of the Trans-Siberian, we shared the room with a ... military guy !!! Funny, in Russia, we've met almost only people working in the Marines... It's like in this country, if you can't become a gangster... euh meaning an Oligark, you're future is in the Army !!! With this guy, Vova, we experienced the same type of relationship as we already did here: you need 2 days to start having a friendly relationship even if we didn't share the same language...

About 20 kilometers outside St Pete, Peterhof is a palace along the vein of Versailles in Palace and is renowned for its fountains. While you can get there by train or bus (or helicopter if you are in a hurry), the coolest way of getting there is by hydrofoil. Six of us had decided to go out to visit the palace and had never been on a hydrofoil, so that was the obvious, if expensive method of transport. Sitting down in the boat I visions that I was in a Bond movie: I was one of the guys running the bad [View Full Entry]

Any time that you arrive in a town at 5.35am you know that it is going to be a long day. When the day ends with 10 shots of vodka, you can be pretty sure that the next day will be even longer. We took an overnight train (third class once again) from St Pete, through Moscow to Vladimir. We got in to Vladimir at 4.55am and took a van to Suzdal, one of the towns in the Golden Ring. Suzdal was the first capital of Russia, before Moscow was even founded. In fact, a prince of Suzdal was the founder [View Full Entry]

London to Russia
Even before I had infiltrated Russian territory I was nearly arrested for taking a photo of a Welcome to Russia sign. This highly photogenic stone-carving was not supposedly posed for photographs. Entering Russia was the bureaucratic, process-driven, lesson in paperwork, that I had been warned to expect. In some ways I'd have been disappointed if it was too straightforward after all that hype. Firstly we had to have our documents inspected at a Border control point, which was followed by immigration, then customs, and finally a checkpoint to make sure the previous 3 gatekeepers had correctly [View Full Entry]
