The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

About 20 kilometers outside St Pete, Peterhof is a palace along the vein of Versailles in Palace and is renowned for its fountains. While you can get there by train or bus (or helicopter if you are in a hurry), the coolest way of getting there is by hydrofoil. Six of us had decided to go out to visit the palace and had never been on a hydrofoil, so that was the obvious, if expensive method of transport. Sitting down in the boat I visions that I was in a Bond movie: I was one of the guys running the bad [View Full Entry]

Any time that you arrive in a town at 5.35am you know that it is going to be a long day. When the day ends with 10 shots of vodka, you can be pretty sure that the next day will be even longer. We took an overnight train (third class once again) from St Pete, through Moscow to Vladimir. We got in to Vladimir at 4.55am and took a van to Suzdal, one of the towns in the Golden Ring. Suzdal was the first capital of Russia, before Moscow was even founded. In fact, a prince of Suzdal was the founder [View Full Entry]

London to Russia
Even before I had infiltrated Russian territory I was nearly arrested for taking a photo of a Welcome to Russia sign. This highly photogenic stone-carving was not supposedly posed for photographs. Entering Russia was the bureaucratic, process-driven, lesson in paperwork, that I had been warned to expect. In some ways I'd have been disappointed if it was too straightforward after all that hype. Firstly we had to have our documents inspected at a Border control point, which was followed by immigration, then customs, and finally a checkpoint to make sure the previous 3 gatekeepers had correctly [View Full Entry]

Already 5000 km done.... still 4000 in front of us ! To sumarize the famous Trans-Siberian Express: stress at the beginning (who in my room? how can I stay 4 days in a train?), unique experience during the trip (cool people, nice landscapes, good organisation...), but happy in the end to get off and sleep in a real bed, take a shower and not living with stangers in a very limited space ! In the wagon, there were 9 compartiments with 4 people. We shared with a dad (funny little guy who talk to us in Russian as if we understood) [View Full Entry]

Dear all, Just a few days before I head off to Moscow where I will meet my 2 buddies Jay and Honza to take the train all the way down to Beijing! And yes, it's the mother of all trainrides: The Trans Siberian Express!! A big dream is finally coming true - making an epic trainjourney that is :) Preparations started basically after Paddy's day this year(thought it was more bartalk than becoming reality) and took about 4 months in total until I've collected my necessary visa for both Russia and China so that I could book outgoing and returning flights. As it turns out, there was nothing to worry about upon my arrival in St Petersburg. There was a taxi stand in the train station, and while I am sure that I got ripped off for a couple of rubles, at least I got to the hotel quickly and safely. Plus I got a bit of a tour and language lesson from the driver, who wanted to practice his English. Even though it didn’t get fully dark until 11.20pm, at least it does get dark, unlike Murmansk. My hotel was really centrally located and I wandered down to the river to [View Full Entry]

The three of us departed Moscow on Tuesday evening, having said our goodbyes to Jill, Anne and Rachel. We set off in the pouring rain and headed for our overnight train to St. Petersburg. We departed the city at 1am and arrived in St.Petersburg at 9.45am. The train journey was the best so far - the train was nicer, the toilets were nicer and we all got a good nights sleep. We arrived into the city centre and got our bearings whilst heading for the hostel - even though this did involve getting on a bus in the complete wrong direction [View Full Entry]

Already one week in Russia... St Petersburg and Moscow visited... And tonight starts really the big trip by train towards the East ! Let's start by the weather! Winter has already landed in Russia, not one full sunny day in a week! Very far from the 30 degrees over Europe for the last weeks ! Rain and around 15 degrees, Bbbbrrrr ! Saint Petersburg is really worth visiting, it has very nice colorful buildings ( red, green, yellow...), strong French and Italian influences in the architecture, very rich art collections in museums. It reminds of Venice but much larger ! A [View Full Entry]
