The old has gone, the new is here and I am getting way too old to stay out partying all night, particularly with a bunch of Russians that know how to drink, sort of. As planned, I went up the city's "square" and watched the activities there. It was not as busy as I thought it was going to be and it was mostly teenagers and foreigners. Ha, I know, I fit right in, but believe it or not, I am faired skin like many Russians and there were foreigners from the southern regions like Georgia where they are darker. The DJ was playing some good music and the crowd was dancing, but I am glad I did not go up there until 11:30. It also snowed pretty good last night so everything was white covered. ... read more

I just wanted to post a Merry Christmas greeting to all of my readers. I attended a wonderful Christmas Eve service yesterday in Moscow. There was no doubt being so far from friends and family, I was more emotional yesterday and today, but when we said the Lord' Supper in everyone's native tongue, it really hit me God is every where and is for every one, not just one country and/or one race. There was something about hearing several languages all at once speaking the same thing. It was not an elaborate church, but was nice. Behind the pulpit at the top there were several windows in the peak of the arch. When the service started, it was still light outside so you could see the snow falling but by the time we got to the ... read more

It is so funny, I am now called everyone's "our American friend". I could not make volleyball on Thursday due to a business meeting in Moscow so I had my driver let the team know. He got there early so just told the lady that runs the gym and she said, "Oh yes, our American friend..." Then I went to a party last night at a couple's house that I met here in town. I was a little nervous going to a party to a place I have never been and not knowing the people and not speaking Russian, but I figure what the heck, it will be a great way to meet people so I went. Well, at 4 AM this morning, I decided I had better go home and get some sleep. I am ... read more

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I am off to bed, but I did go to Moscow with Michael and Alan for a "traditional" American feast. It was missing a few things and a few things were a little different, but to be honest, it was not bad for being 5000 miles away from home. So we did have turkey, yams, and pumpkin pie. Sort of surprised there were no dressing/stuffing and/or gravy and if you wanted mashed potatos, they came with a chunck of fish on top so I passed! All and all, very good and it was a fun time. It was also the most English I have heard all in one place, outside of the Embassy, in a long long time! You would have thought you were in a restaurant ... read more

I can tell I am getting use to my surroundings a little better since I do not have as much to report on the blog each day/week. I did want to let everyone know I am alive and well. It is turning to winter here. We are getting snow just about everyday, but it is still warming up enough during the day that most melts off the road during the day, but a little icy while driving to work in the mornings. Go BUCKS! Saturday will be a great game and yes, I am heading to the Embassy to watch the game. This is a lot better than their night games. Kick off will be at 11:30 PM here, but well worth staying up to watch. According to Erik, my contact at the Embassy, he said ... read more

I made it back safely on Monday. We had some good tail winds and actually landed about an hour earlier than scheduled so I sat in the coffee shop waiting on my driver to show. He was actually an hour early so I did not have to wait long. Of course, I landed back to snow. It was not much, but today it snowed all day long and we have several inches on the ground again. It is suppose to continue through tomorrow, but then get above freezing for the next couple of days before getting colder again so that means ICE! Tomorrow, I head to Moscow to see a performance at one of the theatres. As stupid as it sounds, I do not even know what type of performance it is, but I wanted to ... read more

Well, it is time to change tires, it is finally winter here with our first snow that stuck on the ground. I woke up this morning to the following pictures. It was really pretty. After we got to work, my driver asked to go put the snow tires on the car so we are now driving with spiked tires until Spring. Tonight I went to English class. I was very popular, but of course when I asked if they had any questions for me, they were all shy and did not want to talk. I think the teachers asked more questions about the US than the students, but it was still a good time and great learning experience for all of the kids (and teachers, including me)! Natalie, who is the one I met at the ... read more

Okay, several things to note from the past week. I guess today was the most "exciting" in that I had to go to the local hospital for all of my tests. I had a chest X-ray for TB and then blood drawn for the rest of the tests. You are not going to believe this, but it cost me two chickens and 948 rubles. Yes, I am serious, two chickens! I will get all of my results back in two weeks. This was needed for my work visa. I just hope they let me back in Russia after coming home this next week! Last night I worked night shfit to see my sanitation team. We have a long ways to go, but the good part, they seem interested in wanting to learn. It is just my ... read more

I do not know if I am getting home sick all of the sudden or what, but I am feeling depressed. I am still not happy with my translator. Her technical skills are fine, but she wants to make assumptions for me and the people I am talking to and she about saw the other side of Vince some of you know is there when she asked, "What time are we leaving since we are coming in early tomorrow?" Early defined as one hour, I guess I should not have let her leave early on Friday for coming in early if she thinks everytime she works a little extra, she gets to leave early. Then I met with my chief vet to see what her long term goals were. Good or bad, she did not have ... read more

Coming home in just over a week! The first question, what are the rules about liquids in your carry-on and/or checked luggage for international as well as domestic flights? I know there were some changes, but I also heard they relaxed them a little so I was not sure what to expect when I get to the airport. How about the lines at the airport? Are they about the same or do I need to plan extra time? Second set of questions, I need your help with how to make peanut brittle without corn syrup. While I am home, I plan to get some but does anyone have a good recipe that does not use corn syrup? For those in the Gainesville/Oakwood area, I will be at Buffalo's on Thursday evening after business hours if anyone ... read more
