NOT FOUND -- In case anyone was worried, I am still alive and well. I have a great trip home to the States and now back in Russia for another six months. I have a lot to write and tell about because you all know me, the Traveling Frog as they call me here in Russia, I made a stop in Brussels and Copenhagen on my way home and Quebec City on the return trip. It is past my bed time, but I did want to say hello and let you know I am still well. Thanks, Vince P.S. These are not my pictures so do not worry if they do not make sense with this blog entry. I promise, I did not go someplace else and not tell you about it...lol... read more

I realize this is a little late posting, but coming home to surprise Mom, I could not post this to the public so here it is. I had a good trip back to the States and Mom was surprised by my visit. I will post more from the Donkey Show and my side trips getting here later after I get to my home in Atlanta. It made me feel so good today. The volleyball team wanted me to stop by today even though I was not going to play as it was my last day before leaving. When I arrived, they all stopped praticing and came over. They presented me with a diploma as follows: "We are veterans of Obninsk volleyball section training at Sport and Recreation Center State Research Center of Russia FSUV ORPE ... read more

Initially, I had this posted with the Dinner with the Ambassador, but decided it was way too long for one reading so I cut and pasted into a second posting. I know I have taken enough of your time so you can read this one at a different time, but I had to tell you the story of the birthday party. I hope you enjoy. Freddie, who I play volleyball with, invited me to his brother's birthday party. I had met his brother, who was playing the gutar at the Mexican Restaurant some time ago. That is when I embarrassed myself and asked Freddie to translate for his brother so he knew what we were talking about. Then Andrey said in plain English, "I understand." Initially I was going to say no since I did ... read more

I have not heard for sure, but I think today we will have set the third day in a row for record highs here in the Moscow area. It has been around 93-95oF, but thankful, it is still cooling off at night so the sleeping is not too bad. The funny part, some people tell me this will be it for summer here and if next week's weather is any prediction, they may be right. They are calling for temperatures in the upper 70's next week for our highs. For those of you working in and around meat and chicken plants, you do not want to even know how hot it was on the production floor today. I will let you do the math, but it was 28oC, which YES, is way too hot!!!! The best ... read more

Before I get to some of the funny stories, I had to share this one from today. Based on my stories you may believe this but there was a 35 mile backup, moving at about 5 mph on the main interstate that circles around Moscow, but you are not going to guess what for, heat. Yes, it was about 85oF here today (that was amazing in itself), but it was causing cars to overheat and they just stall on the interstate. It was incredible. I happen to be in Moscow for the Russian version of the "Poultry Show" and Misha had been waiting at his sister's house for us. He told Denis (my translator) that he came from the south and it was a complete parking lot heading south so we headed through the center ... read more

Spring has finally sprung, but I am not sure I like it. It has been a very different week I must say. It started on Monday night when I got home from work and I had no hot water. Everyone kept telling me it happens here in Russia where they shut off the hot water for two weeks while they do boiler maintenance, but it is usually in the summer so I was hoping this was not the two weeks. I got up on Tuesday morning and still no hot water so I turned on the stove to boil some water so I could take a sponge bath. When I got home Tuesday night, I decided to put my wonderful crock pot to good use and this time, not to make me a hot meal, but ... read more

I noticed it today when I got home from Moscow, they turned the heat off. During the day, the building was getting hot but in the morning, it took the chill off. We are getting up and into the 50's durning the day and down into the 40's at night so I guess it is about time. They have also openned the "drunk cafe" where Michael and I use to go for dinner and a drink after work. I guess Alan wants to start joining us once a week as well so we may have a "party" each week if several others join us. I would not say the food is that good as much as it is just fun and they lady there that takes the order just loves to make me try to order ... read more

I know I have been suppose to add pictures and blogs for over three weeks now and I told myself, I am not going to bed tonight (Sunday) until I get my blog caught up so here we go, get the popcorn out, and start reading as there will be several as I break them up into the different places I have been visiting. Also, I will update the Easter blog as well so you have some additional information on the Easters here in Russia if you are interested. I had some friends over for a small going away party. They are moving from Obninsk to Moscow to make more money. They have been a lot of fun so I had a small get together for them here (at my flat) that lasted much later ... read more

On Wednesday, Dima and his father invited me to his summer home, where he lives full time since Dima's mother and father divorced. So on the way out the home, which is on the very south end of Obninsk, Dima tells me we are picking up Tonya, a friend of his father, who also speaks English. I am thinking a girlfriend of his father, but it did not matter to me, I was game for as many or as few of people as they wanted to invite. We pick Tonya up at her job, where she is a supervisor for a candy manufacturing facility. She gets in the car and they do quick introductions so I say "Good Evening" in English. She gives me the look of death as she checks me out. I lean towards ... read more

First I want to wish everyone a Happy Easter. This year the Russian Orthodox Easter landed on the same day as the Christian Easter. I know there are two different calendars, but not sure how Easter is determined, but it too was yesterday (Sunday). It is not really celebrated here. I know they have a lot of Easter cakes for sale, but I do not think people do anything much different, as general statement. As for weather, I think our weather is much the same as many of you are getting back home. March was awesome here, but April has been cold and windy (I guess like spring is suppose to be). We woke up to everything covered in snow. By the evening, it had melted off, but did continue to snow later that evening. I ... read more
