Saturday 6:30 am, Nothing can stop me, clouds, rain...distance.. I need a breath of fresh air.. I love Bucharest, the people, the streets - mix of old and new, the chaos... I cant live without his noisy personality but from time to time I have to run away as far as I can... So got my friends togheter, lots of patience, laughters and drive towards Transylvanian mountains. First stop was to Posada's cinegetic museum where i had a sweet encounter with a friendly bear (lately they are the turists atraction when they come down from woods to Brasov or Sinaia for a meal from garbage). My plan was to go to Bran, at Dracula's castle (I can't get enough of visiting it)... but the weather had other plans... so we stoped in Sinaia, visited Peles castle, ... read more

The easy answer is that he never existed but I did find out about a very disturbing character called Vlad Dracul Tepes who had the nasty habit of sticking people on spikes and leaving them to die a slow and painful death. Dracul is derived from "son of the dragon" and Tepes means "impaler", thus you get the charming name of Vlad the Impaler, son of the Dragon. This bloodlust led to the myth of the Vampire Lord we all know as Count Dracula. Sadly this was one of the main reasons why I chose to visit Transylvania but after seeing a number of towns and their surroundings I can easily say that this area has far far more to offer than vampire myths and haunted castles. Before traveling to Transylvania I spent a few days ... read more

the train ride to Brasov was uneventful, though we did talk to that Austin woman for half of the time. Being from Texas, her speech was painfully slow and sometimes we just wanted to smack her and tell her to get to the point. arriving at the train station, we were approached by this woman Maria who apparently worked at Rolling Stone hostel, a place we had read bad reviews about. she kept trying to tell us our hostel was booked and to take a flyer but we just said 'bye' and kept walking. about ten minutes later while waiting for the bus to the old town plaza she came up to us once again, telling us that people had come to her from our hostel, kismet dao, and that they had a reservation but were ... read more

So today Jeff and I did the most unexpected thing ever. We fucking climbed down a mountain. Oh, ya, in the rain. Who does that?? And yes, I almost fell like 400 times on slippery-ass rocks. I even scraped off half of the skin on my side on a tree that I had to grab onto so as not to fall off the mountain. And then after not falling even once on the mountain, we get down to a set of stairs and I slip and almost fall on my ass. Stupid manmade structures. We've also visited the Black Church, which was burnt at one point, I think. Also saw this old 16th Century fortress atop a hill. And ya. We shopped a little, but I didn't buy anything. It was sort of a weird, not-doing-much ... read more

So I eat lots of mushrooms in Romania. Because there aren't many vegetarian-friendly dishes. But there are lots of mushroom dishes. I can't complain. I really like mushrooms. Also, I could never live in Romania. There are too many stray dogs and I would just take them home with me. I would be like Ace Ventura Pet Detective, completely surrounded with dirty, smelly, mean dogs. How glorious, haha. Finally, my back is like an aligator's. I'm peeling like crazy. And. Two days ago I was oozing from my back. I think I had little blister things. It was gross, but I sort of secretly thought it was cool. But don't tell anyone: it's a secret. Anyway, we're in Brasov right now. We just arrived today from Sighisoara, which was a rather small town where Dracula was ... read more

Oh ye believers of the legend............. Without a crucifix, garlic, silver bullet or a stake, I have ventured into Dracula's Castle and returned without a touch of being undead! Truth be told, Vlad Tepes is a genuine hero in these parts. He was a true nationalist who wanted to make his territories free from the Turkish invaders.. Ok, yeah, he did impale people (and now I do know how to it), but more as a warning to his enemies. There is history that Vlad's grandfather went to the Castle, but no record that Vlad himself ever went there. For that metter, neither did Bram Stoker!!! Yes, it dates back to the 1400s which was Vlad's time. In the 1920's the people of Wallachia and Transylvania gave the Castle to the Queen at the time, Marie. The ... read more

Hey there trip voyeurs.......... Yesterday we had an excellent tour of Bucharest, followed by a good dinner al fresco. Thank gooodness the temperature had cooled because it had been in the mid-90s since I arrived!!!!! This morning we were on the bus by 9 AM for our ride to Transylvania. It took almost 4 hours to get here, but it was interesting and informative because we learned a lot about life under Communism and the Gypsies. One finds it amazing that the people's lives here have completely changed in 15 years since the revolution. None of the consumer goods we saw in a rest stop were available......nor were the cars. It truly been aleap into a brave new world for these people. We went past a building which is not on the current tourist route.....the building ... read more
