OK I think we left you in Krakow on last blog and it was a short one - sorry about that but time and interenet access wait for no-one. From Krakow we caught the overnight train to Budapest in Hungary - we got lucky and had a 4 berth cabin to ourselves so great sleep. We stayed at a lovely hostel - the Budapest Bubble (google it) with a lovely girl called Olga in charge. We had a great time at the thermal pools - spent a few hours in there and it was nice and relaxing though we probably broke all the rules of the place - apparently there are rules about which pools to use first and stuff - we had no idea what we were doing but we had fun. The Danube was ... read more

Greetings! From Istanbul we caught a night train north to Bulgaria. We nursed a bottle of Raki (Turkish Ouzo) with our cabin mates before nodding off, only to be woken by border guards at 3 a.m. and told we needed to walk to the far end of the station to have our passports stamped. As we exited, the conductor pulled Jub aside, stuffed 15 Euros in his pocket, and asked for three cartons of cigarettes from the duty free store. So after getting his stamp, Jub headed to the store, but realized the conductor hadn't specified a brand. No big deal; ten minutes back to the train, ten minutes back to duty free, only to find they'd just sold out of the conductor's brand. Jub then repeated the process--trying to ignore that it was now around ... read more

Brasov day 9 (June 15) Another mini-bus ride to Brasov. Equally crowded. I think one woman had a number of dinner sets in one stripy bag that was placed in the aisle, quite a few people sitting on luggage in the aisles. Brasov has a marketing slogan “Brasov, Probably the Best City in the World” which is a play on a Heineken add. A bold claim but I liked the slight humility in the “Probably” and also the fact that it wasn’t an absolute claim. Brasov is a lovely town. It’s old town including the black church (named due to a fire), the many towers and it’s remaining fortified wall were all interesting. It had a relaxed feel to the town and despite being really hot it was a good place to wander around. We had ... read more

Tuesday, May 19th. We took the 6:13am P-train from Gara de Noor in Bucharest to Brasov. We were so excited to get our first peek at the mountains. The train ride was very nice and quiet. We arrived at the chaotic train station and navigated our way by bus to the hostel. Unfortunately, they did not get our reservations and the cheapest dorm room was booked. We had to stay in a private room which was nice but out of our budget. We did what we usually do when we first arrive in a town, ask lots of questions about the town from anyone who will help us and find the cheapest grocery store. We were pleased to find the Kismet Dao Hostel had super friendly staff and that Brasov had a Carrefour grocery store. We ... read more

When I first arrived in Brasov, I was on my way to Moldova and it was early in the morning and snowy. I was in search of Autogara 2 (Bus station 2). Given the amount of tourist traffic that this city gets, I would not have expected that it was that difficult to get directions to this bus station. Granted, I don't speak Romanian, but really, "Autogara Doi?" shouldn't elicit a 'deer in the headlights' response from a couple dozen locals at the main station. I asked the information clerk at the train station about a bus to Chisinau, and she gave me that classic Eastern bloc 'I don't get paid enough to fulfill my existing responsibilities look' before barking that "no bus, just train here. Take bus 23". And she pointed west. Heck, the first ... read more

Brasov is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Still seemingly relatively unscathed by tourists the people were very friendly and welcoming. Musts include trying the mulled wine which is superb and the local spirit shot which isn't. ... read more

Whenever I went to a Hallowe'en party as a kid I always went as Dracula. And not just because my widow's peak and pasty complexion meant I barely had to do any preparation. The legendary tale of the bloodsucking vamp from Transylvania was one of my favourite books, so I jumped at the chance to visit the spooky territory where the story was based. Of course, Bram Stoker's work of fiction was at least loosely based on the very real Vlad Tepes, who lived in the 15th Century and had a penchant for impaling his Turkish enemies on stakes. He was, apparently, a complete Count. Our base for our three nights in Transylvania was to be Brasov, dramatically set at the foot of the Carpathian mountains. Our train left Bucharest an hour and a half late. ... read more

Bran Castle was totally dıfferent to how I expected ıt to be but stıll very, very cool. I was ın a buoyant mood all day because I'd thought we were just camping near it, not actually goıng there. The castle was not what İ expected (fairly obvıously ın retrospect, sınce what I expected was for ıt to be very dark and creepy) but I loved every mınute of ıt. A quıck hıstory lesson; Vlad Tepes (the Impaler) was the real life inspiration for Dracula. He was famed for his cruelty (partıcularly ımpalıng people on wooden spıkes as a form of torture/executıon. Thıs probably stems from the fact that hıs father was tortured ın front of hım and hıs brother by the Turks, who educated both of them. The brother was loyal to the Turks, while Vlad ... read more

We set off from Cluj at nine, which meant I had time for a shower, despite the late night last night. It feels very nice to have clean hair after all the days of dodgy showers and/or it being too cold to go to bed (or anywhere really) with wet hair. We stopped in a pretty town called Sighisoara, in which we saw the beginnings of the Dracula franchise, which is really exciting, too me anyway. There were mugs of Dracula's head, a restaraunt named after Dracula, Dracula T-shirts... you name it. And also rings with Winnie the Pooh on them, which disproves the assertion that souvenir shops all sell the same stuff. After lunch we drove to Brasov, passing through a forest that was almost a jungle and very, very beautiful. Our hotel is lovely, ... read more

Brasov Friday 15th February 2008 This would be our last full day in Transylvania, and our last full day of the trip. Due to unforeseen financial problems we’d been forced to terminate the trip early and had booked a flight back to Liverpool out of Bucharest. We spent the first portion of the day returning and booking into the hotel we’d visited the day before. Yes it was expensive but we wanted to go out on a high! The hotel was centrally located, immaculate and I managed to get a room of my own! Our waistcoat-wearing, excitable host was more than a little eccentric; his energy and enthusiasm was greatly appreciated after the previous night’s questionable experience in The Rolling Stone hostel. Snow was beginning to fall, and as this was the first time we’d seen ... read more
