Večer sme si kúpili víno a pozerali na západ slnka.... read more

Priamo do Rovenska viedla 16 kilometrová cesta, žiaden asfalt, len utlačená hlina a k tomu kopa kameňov a výmolov. Zvyšok ... read more

Dnes náš čakalo ďalšie cestovanie do oblasti Banát, kde sa nachádzajú české dediny. Nechodia sem žiadne priame spoje a ani vlak, takže dostať sa sem bolo dosť obtiažne. V Petrošani sme prišli na autobusovú stanicu a začali zistovať nejaký spoj. Na stanici boli štyri nástupištia a k tomu jedna predajňa lístkov. Napriek tomu si nikdo nebol úplne istý z ktorého čísla náš autobus odchádza, prípadne kde by bolo najlepšie prestúpiť na ďalší. Toto bolo naše prvé stopovanie v ... read more

Apologies in advance for this lengthy entry...maybe it's a train trip's reading... Just as I got reacquainted with Macedonia I came up with the bright idea to leave. Not because it wasn’t great being back but it was more about time management. Oh yes, ever the diary manager and organiser. There was some rationalisation involved. My ‘plans’ were to go to Albania again but, as Ramadan had commenced and would continue until early August I thought I might have a better time there once it was all was over. You know, just in case I stay with a family and have to wait until sundown to eat… Anyone who has been with me while I experience a sugar low will know what I mean by that! I need to eat when I need to eat -there ... read more

It is sort of arrogant to just write like this into the universe. With 52,000 hits, someone must be reading, but it still feels a little arrogant to me. When I was a kid, my father kept a calendar over the sink in his bathroom. In the morning after his run, he would write down on the calendar, what he had done the day before. "Dinner at the Vintage. 4 miles; 28 minutes." "Skied Bear Valley. Grilled a filet Mignon. Wine and laughs in the Jacuzzi after." Maybe it was his way of saying, "I am still alive." He wanted to write something interesting on the calendar in the morning. If he just watched TV, drank 3 beers, and passed out, he would know he wasn't using the gift of time. Hard to tell with him ... read more

Everyday for the last month has been jam packed and we have only just had the chance to sit down with enough time to write about Romania. We quickly noticed that most of the people living in Romania are very open and friendly and curious to talk to foreigners. On the train ride from Budapest we were quickly greeted by Alex, he was originally from Romania but working for M.T.V in Budapest. Purely for fun he was coming back to organize a road trip for a few tourists wanting to see Transylvania. We spent the train ride looking at some Beautiful places he was planning on taking them. I had just been reading a book about an Englishman learning to live in a small village in Transylvania and had been really moved by the way he ... read more

Timisoara.

25-6-2007 The journey towards Semenic - I turn back again I liked the look of Anina which has some pleasant 19th century buildings. However, since the maxi taxi up to Caraşova was to leave fairly shortly I didn’t have a lot of time to look round. Ioana, my head of department at school, rang to ask if I was alright and I was able to reassure her that, today at least, I was sticking to ordinary tourist activities. I bought a paper to see if I could read about Katy’s death but it is already fading from the news. The other passengers on the maxi taxi to Caraşova advised me to enquire at the new hotel on the main road where I am dropped off about accommodation. There I was told that a room would cost ... read more

20-6-2007 Get me to the Danube Damn! No places left in the sleeping wagon! I’d waited so long to start this journey. I didn’t want to retreat back to my baking 10th floor flat in one of Bucharest’s less select areas. Besides which, the amount of time before I had to leave for the UK was rapidly dwindling. Affairs at school where I was teaching out here in Romania had dragged on interminably as we tried to secure a place at another school for an unsatisfactory student. I took a seat in an ordinary compartment thinking that I could doze in there or, indeed, if it wasn’t very full, stretch out a little. As it turned out, the seats were all taken. In Romania there is seldom any question of sitting on a train minding your ... read more
