We arrived to rain, so we opted for the hop on hop off bus tour and we decided on a seat undercover. It was a good option as we got to see a lot of the city, got our bearings, and allowed the rain Gods to finish up their gardening. After the bus we jumped on the Gondola which took us to the top of the hill. The rain scared away most of the tourists so there were no lines and we got a Gondola to ourselves. We had great views all the way up. Most of our pictures don't do the place justice. This city would make San Francisco look like Saskatchewan. Every house has a view of the ocean cuz each one is higher than the next. We're hopeful the parking break technology in ... read more

Up sticks again and headed for Cadiz. On the way decided that we were enjoying being on the road again so much that we would try and make Faro in Portugal. Had a good run through, some beautiful scenery and some boring flat land and arrived at the town of Fusal at about 2.30pm. Chose a site, met the local Brits and had a short walk along the quayside. The site is right in the middle of the town, on the quayside, lots to see & do. Mon 27th Dec Walk into town first thing, did some food shopping & found a pharmacy. Had a look at the local church and then returned to the van & mage lunch, burger & chips. Read my book for a while, had a doze & then walked out right ... read more

I remember saying these words in November 2009 and repeating them many times since. I also remember saying I had absolutely no desire to ever live in Europe. Never say never I guess ... Let's back up a little bit ... After the last entry, I went to Morocco for a couple weeks, then flew through Lisbon (my worst flight experience ever) to Boston. I spent about nine months there, worked some random jobs including a couple weeks at the Museum of Science and about five months at Northeastern University. And then something unexpected happened. My friend Liz called me, freaking out because she was leaving in two weeks for Portugal to get an MBA. She asked (what I thought was rhetorically) if I would go with her. I said that due to my first and ... read more

Monday 13th December to Sunday 19th December 2010. Monday 13th December 2010 Ferraguda (near Portimao) Packed up and said goodbye to Mary – she is a 78 year old lady, widowed for 5 years and had spent her married life caravanning with her husband and kids, and then into motorhome after kids left home. She commented that after her husband , Alf, died, it was only 5 months looking at the walls at home, when she decided that was enough at home, and off she went travelling again. She had a really nice van for one person. She told us of lots of places to visit, knows heaps about Morocco as she loves it there – and she does not need a map –could rattle it all off. She also rattled off Spain and Portugal, knowing ... read more

Monday 6th December to Sunday 12th December 2010. Monday 6th December 2010 Sagres. Our beautiful girl Megan is celebrating her 21st birthday today. We are in a campsite in Sagres, south west corner of Portugal. The weather is warm and the wind is from the south and the ocean is stirred up. There are sea cliffs - only 100 metres high. 4pm went and bought a bottle of cheap red wine and Gaye was off to to use wi-fi and publish the travel blog. Tom went for a short bicycle ride and came home and cooked up a soup for dinner – really good tonight. We have decided to print out our travel diary so we can read it to refresh our memories – where we have been and what have seen and done. We are ... read more

Our Adventure Monday 29th November to Sunday 5th December 2010. Monday 29th November 2010 Fatima. Not too cold as it is raining. Off to Tomar – more country roads so we went the long way around but got there OK. Parked in the centre of the town car park and off to see the tourist information office. Maps and directions were great, so walked up the hill to the visit the ‘Convent of Christ’ and the ‘Knights Templar Castle’. The members of the Order of the Temple helped the Portuguese fight the Moors in the XIIth and XIIIth centuries. As a set-off against their effective aid, they received lands and acquired a certain political power. Tomar was chosen in 1156 as headquarters of the Order of the Knights Templar and the Convent of Christ was founded ... read more

Hi all, We left Lisbon after a great week and headed over the distinctive 25th April bridge, so named after the date of the 1974 revolution which ousted the long time Portuguese dictator Salazar, we drove south past the city of Setabul then turned slightly inland and into the region called Alentejo, (Alen-Tejo meaning all things south of the river Tejo or Tagus as it's commonly known) this large area south of Lisbon is the driest and hottest in Portugal and produces cork bark which is one of Portugal's main exports, as we drove by the endless woodlands almost all the trees had had their bark stripped up to the first branches where the cork had been removed. Our destination was Alcacer de Sal on the Sado estuary, long ago an important trade town built by ... read more

Monday 22nd November to Sunday 28th November 2010. Monday 22nd November 2010 Lisbon. Today nearly all museums are closed so we made it our housework day. 3 loads of clothes washing and drying, update diary, finish and publish travel blog. After lunch we walked over to the huge shopping complex near here. Tom has been looking for a nice winter coat but unable to find one, so after looking for a while we went to dinner and then off to the movies and saw ‘Inside Job’. Very interesting about the collapse of the financial market in 2008. Taxi home. Tuesday 23rd November 2010. Tom woke up with very sore throat and a snuffly nose. Into town about 11am to look for more information on Portugal at the Portugal Tourist Office, but the Lisbon tourist office said ... read more
