It has started, carnival 2011. The streets of Funchal have been redecorated (some of the festive lights were still there from end of the year festivities), and yesterday there was again humpah humpah music in the streets. Lots of children have dressed up and are dancing in the streets to entertain the people. The newspapers reported hotelowners very satisfied with their occupancy rates. But not just that, also some very good guitar music by two italian guys. And I like to share al that happiness ! You can see more carnivalesque pictures on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=60855&id=100000507281655&l=4659f5f76b Yesterday a new coffee shop opened near us. High time, we thought, because they have Illy coffee, which is still our favourite, together with Nespresso. So we went and had a coffee, which was delicious. And free, because of the opening. ... read more

Last weekend I went to Portugal! we left bright and early thursday morning from Cadiz and drove to Lisboa. I woke up that morning with a really bad sore throat and had a slight fever the night before, but i decided i would go on the trip anyways...i mean a free trip to portugal, kind of a once in a life time opportunity. On our way to lisboa we made a pit stop in a little city named Evora. We went to a little temple/room that was like a memorial for the people would had died from an explosion in the city. the whole building/room was built out of human bones. I thought it was a little creepy but it was kind of cool to see too. We only stopped there for a few hours then ... read more

Dat ... read more

We'd seen the junk Nuthin Wong still swying in the harbour of Funchal for the harbour of Funchal for the past few weeks, and wondered when he'd be leaving. Last Monday Clive was back on the pier with his folding table and several copies of his book. He told us he was waiting for a video camera to arrive. It was held up in Porto for some reason, but it should arrive the next day. Never send anything through Fedex, he warned us. The camera would serve to make films in addition to his blog and in the end make a DVD of his voyage. Anyhow, as soon as the camera had arrived, they'd leave. Originally he was to go back to Canada. But while in Madeira he'd received an email from a old friend who ... read more

I can't think of how to explain Portugal, so instead of trying that momumentous task, let's talk about my favorite thing: Food. Portuguese cuisine not only varies from region to region but from town to town. There is a well deserved culinary pride. The details of this post are by no means family secrets or specialties, but merely a few things that I have found interesting that I hadn't necessarily encountered before living in Porto. Pastéis de Nata: Literally, Cream Pastries, pastéis da nata can thankfully be found at every cafe (and there's probably at least one of every corner). They are enjoyed throughout the day by the Portuguese, and best served when freshly sprinkled with cinnamon (canela). Note: when ordering, "pastel de Nata" will get you one, "pastéis de nata" says you want more than ... read more

Yes, pulling out my hair has been part of my travel plan. But I may get to Portugal with some of it intact; or wear a wig. Either way, we're still going. So out of my $9000.00: I've purchased cheap airline tickets( with insurance- can't forget that) for about $4100.00. We leave March 14 and return April 01,a total of 17 days. With that done, I can now plan our trip. This part has not been very easy, but this is what our itinerary looks like. First our flights: From Vancouver BC, to Montreal on to Brussels and then arriving in Porto, Portugal. All in all, 21 hrs. Our departure from Portugal will be different. We are leaving from Lisbon in the south. There is no extra cost in this and doing things this way will ... read more

One of the great strengths of the United States is... We have a very large Christian population - we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.... read more

Being on this island for three months, means that you have to find a rythm. You can't be on holiday all that time, quite apart from the fact that our budget doesn't stretch to 3-months' vacantioning. We both brought our mini laptops and Paul is doing his bourse thing every day, making us some nice spending money for restaurant and trips. Besides keeping him happy. Even though I'm not a fan of routine, some discipline is needed to keep me from just wandering through life and in the end doing nothing at all. That's very easy to get used to, but there's too much in this life that must be done, even if most of it is usually not pleasant. Like paying bills, filling in forms, talking to civil servants, to name a few. Or see ... read more

Warning: This is our most ridiculously long entry ever. We arrived in Faro after dark but when we found a map Dan navigated us to our hostel with ease even though Ashley looked at the map and could only see a jumble of windey crazy streets. Our first experience talking with a local was delightful. The receptionist at the hostel was one of the friendliest, most helpful people we've encountered (family members not included) so far; it was hard to get out of the conversation so that we could get settled. Once we were settled in our room she directed us to a lovely family run restaurant not far from the hostel. Dinner was amazing. We had appetizers, 2 main dishes, a ‘jug’ (not a pitcher or a bottle) of wine, 2 espressos and dessert for ... read more
