Travel Blog – France #3 So I have been avoiding writing in the blog because I promised the next blog entry would be about my Spain/Portugal trip. Hmmm remind me not to do that again; I just end up not writing at all if I feel like I HAVE to write about something in particular. Well I am still going to try about the trip and I will add a few more as well. The commentary will not be as good 2 months later but MEH its my blog I can do what I want. Portugal Lisbon- even though it took us an hour to find (after asking a tired cranky me asking about 15 people who had no idea what I was on about because I can’t speak Portuguese) our hostel was the best. Friendly ... read more

Last Thursday November 18 until Friday the 19 I ventured to Lisbon, Portugal...for the night. I went with my friend Stephanie. We met in the airport, this time there was plenty of to get to the airport. Luckily I brought some of my work so I could get it done. But anyways, our flight was at 6:15, and its an hour and a half flight, but with the time difference I was in Portugal by 6:30. We had to go through a custom check, and I was sure to ask about getting my passport stamped but unfortunately they don't do that from Spain. So we worked our way through the airport to figure out how to catch a bus to the hostel. We found the "aerobus" and hoped on and it took us downtown to where ... read more

The West coast of Portugal - Tui to Sagres – 12 November to 22 November Well, after spending the evening in the first Irish bar of the trip in Tui, I find myself in a place called Ingrina. I’d never heard of either of these places prior to the trip, and whilst I’d return to one, Tui can keep it’s bottled Guinness to itself. From Tui it has been down to Porto, then Coimbra, Batalha, Tomar, Pego, Milfontes, Carrapeteira, and finally Sagres. Porto is the 2nd largest city in Portugal so navigating it was a bit of a nightmare, glad I came across it on the Sunday rather than the Saturday as the town would have been even busier. The ‘old town’ is very nice, not amazing but nice, but oddly within a street or two ... read more

We never really planned on going to Portugal, but after our transportation problems in France, we didn’t end up spending as much time there as we thought… and its much warmer down south than up in northern Europe, so we decided to go check it out! It turned out to be a very good decision, as the 2 places we visited in Portugal turned out to be some of our favourites so far. Mainly because of the hostels. Both were AWESOME! Our first stop was at Yes! Hostel in Lisbon. The hostel was just lovely and included all of the things we like in a hostel.. good bunks (wooden, meaning secure and not squeaky), large free breakfast (which included eggs! EGGS! That’s a first), great kitchen, and really helpful hostel staff. Pedro, who worked the front ... read more

Monday 1st November to 7th November 2010. Monday 1st Nov 2010 Still in Oporto Sun is out and wind has dropped - so Tom off for a ride along cycle way on road bike - there are lengths of cobbles - one brake block fell off - found block but no sign of bolt so now we have to find bike shop. Got home and found that a bidon bolt works with 2 washes he has - checked other brake block and its alignment washer was cracked so fixed it - and tightened all other loose bolts - bloody cobble stones. Into Oporto - found out it was Public Holiday - 1st Nov is ‘Visit The Dead’ day - the bus went past a cemetery - full of people, flowers everywhere and spotlessly clean. Into town ... read more

HI all Well we've been in Portugal for over 3 weeks now, here's were we've been so far. Thursday 14th October Our first stop was just over the border at a site in Caminha and as the name suggests it is on the banks of the Minha river, from the empty beach we looked north across the estuary and back into Spain from where we had just come, it was literally a stones throw away. The site was run by a company called Orbitur who run around 20 sites along the coast of Portugal, more details to come on them later, the site was to a decent standard and next to the beach. We spent 2 days here, again on the beach and in the sea and having the locals watch us thinking are they stupid ... read more

Sooo, hello my friends. Yes, again, we are alive, and yes, we know we suck. Again. But whatcha gunna do? If you can cast your minds back to our last blog, written approximately around the time of Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, you may remember that I was writing about our teaching adventures while we were in sunny Crete (I was writing from Crete, we didn't teach there). Even though that was way back when, in the interests of completeness this update is all about our travels in Crete and Portugal, and what we've been up to between then and now (sneak peek: we're in Italy at the moment!). (Also Drew deserves some credit as he did write a bit of this one while we were in Crete, it's just been languishing in ... read more

We flew in from Barcelona to Lisbon airport, mid morning on a Tuesday. A reasonably brief 2 hour flight we were probably the only two tourists in the midst of lots of business men and women - all obviously flying in from Spain to Portugal for work. We hopped the airport shuttle and headed into the centre of Lisbon. We were sad to leave Spain but happy to get to yet another interesting port of call. This was our first time in Portugal for both of us but not our first attempt at trying to get there. Earlier in the year, the Icelandic Volcano 'Eyjafjallajokull' (try and say that over and over) had stopped us from spending a long awaited weekend in Lisbon, instead we both had to go to work on the Monday when we ... read more

Yeah after 4 days of torrential rain it finally stopped which means it felt like we saw nothing at all of Lisbon, It gave us the impression that Lisbon was a horrible city. In continuing rain we checked out of the revolting hostel we were in which smelt of wet dog and who knows what else and went to a 2 star hotel which felt like real luxury. From there we were able to explore a 7 floor department store called Cortez Ingles where we went to the movies and saw “Life as we know it”. In Portugal the movies are’nt dubbed so they are all in English with Portugese sub titles. The movie provided light and comic entertainment and got us out of our room which was just what we needed. Next morning with the ... read more
