Porto Bristol Associacao - Peter Evens

The "Porto Bristol Association" was formed to bond the Twin Cities of Bristol in England, and Oporto in Portugal, together.

This Page highlights some of the activities of the Oporto Branch, Portugal.

--------------------------------------------------

The following words are that of the "Treaty" that was signed between these two Cities, on 11th April 1984:-

"Being mindful of the trading links which have existed between the City of Bristol and the City of Oporto for over five centuries and the firm friendship which has been established between our two cities over that long period, we consider that it is now appropriate for those links to be recognised formally and for them to be taken as the foundation upon which further development of trade, commerce and cultural activities may be built.
On behalf of the citizens of our two ancient cities, we therefore assent to the inauguration of a Trade and Cultural Union between Bristol and Oporto and resolve in establishing this Treaty Of Friendship to undertake everything within our power to further the links of friendship and the benefits of co-operation between our two cities".

To Conclude a very successful tour to Portugal by the Bristol Oporto Association, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Peace Treaty between these two great Cities, a farewell dinner was held at the Trés Séculos restaurant in Taylor's portwine Lodge. Starting with aperitiffs served on the veranda, overlooking the Ponte Luis 1 bridge and the Douro river, it proved to be a beautiful setting. After a few photographs were taken in the gardens, to help us to remember this special occaision, dinner was served and the portwine flowed! Attended by [View Full Entry]

A visita à Rota do Românico
A visita à Rota do Românico

A beautiful setting, good food and great company
Time for the "Associação Porto-Bristol" to celebrate their 2008 Christmas Dinner A good end to the year The Oporto Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club is the regular venue for our Annual Dinner, thanks to the kind permission of Club members who also participate in our activities, and this year was no exception. First, we had the formal part to the night, with the Annual General Meeting of the Association being well attended. Once this was completed (on time) the move was swiftly made to the Lounge, with a chance to relax. A lovely evening and dinner was enjoyed by all, [View Full Entry]

In October 2008 the Porto-Bristol Association had the opportunity to study Roman art and architecture through the "Vale do Sousa", in Northern Portugal. This one day special Itinerary, organised by Doctor Duarte Pinheiro and Anabela Marques, proved a resounding success for the 14 members that went along. A first class tour of some of the beautiful historical monuments / churches in the region, with lots of useful information by our Guide, made the day very interesting. In addition a good lunch was provided in the Quinta de Cedovezas. At the end of the day it was on to see the house [View Full Entry]

Lunch in the "Shakesbeer" restaurant
After the Judy Garland Concert at the "Casa da Música" there was time for a good meal.
In March 2008 the "Porto-Bristol Association" went dancing along the Yellow Brick Road all the way to the "Casa da Música" in Porto. This was for a rather special Concert, performed by the "Orquestra Nacional do Porto" , who played the music score for the complete Judy Garland film. Afterwards 19 members followed the road to the "Shakesbeer" restaurant, for an enjoyable lunch. In April, the second event for this year was a walk/gathering in the "Parque da Cidade" (Porto), followed by a talk by Maria João Tavares (member of the Association) [View Full Entry]
