Poland so far has been a fascinating country, and a country that we've been able to give real time to. We spent our first night in Zakopane, a favourite destination of Polish tourists for its accessibility to the high Tatras mountains. As we approached we entered a realm of intricately carved log houses, and small wooden churches against a backdrop of the craggy limestone mountains. We then cycled to Krakow, where we had the humbling and chilling experience of visiting Auschwitz, before heading to the least populated and least developed region in the south east of Poland, Podkarparckie, where Poland borders Slovakia and the Ukraine. Poland in the southeast appears a country juxtaposed between centuries old and new. Frenzied road building and property development is taking place in anticipation of the Euro 2012 football cup against ... read more

Zakopane is a fantastic vortex we only intended on staying here 2 nights we've now been here for 5! we have been determined to wait out the torrential rain as you cant go hiking in the rain! So finally today are luck pulled through and a pretty much day came our way. So to make the most of it we decided to clime a mountain! It took about 3hours and we only made it to the lower peak. Zakopane is the type of place with so much to do but it has to be nice weather, people could come here travelling and never leave its strange like that. Two american girls in our hostel were Hiking when a man completely naked save his hiking boots jumped out on to the path, manipulating himself, it was ... read more

The train to Zakopane is scenic but somewhat raw the windows wouldnt open and we had just ran to get our bags from the hostel and back to the train station wearing backpacks in 35 degree heat, i literaly felt like i was on fire. the train took a ridculous amount of time because it was quite old and be every so often it reversed back along the track as it veers off to alot of random small towns enroute. So after getting on the train at 2:45 we arrived at 7:00 and all the banks were closed so i couldnt cash any travelers cheques and Barclays (as they do everytime you go away) had put a temporary block on both of our cards but thanks to the Hostel stara polana as they trusted that ... read more

Krupowki. That’s where we spent our day today. This place is the center of tourist life here in Zakopane. It’s a pedestrian street that has all the typical things a European street contains, restaurants, shops, pubs, things like those. The street is called Krupowki. This place is so cheap!! A famous cheese that is sold here is only $1.50. This kind of cheese is unpasteurized goat or sheep’s milk that is smoked. A hand-carved chess set cost only $20 and a beautiful, hand-knit, wool sweater was only $7! Can you believe that? Everything was just so cheap, I was in awe. When we got hungry, we ate at this restaurant that served something called Rydze z Pateini, it’s a dish that has local, wild mushrooms, sautéed in butter and spices. It was so good! At ... read more

Today we woke up a little late, we were tired and we didn’t really want to get out of our warm, cozy beds this morning. But when we did, we went into the restaurant and helped ourselves to the complimentary breakfast. I swear, we carry hot chocolate everywhere! Actually no, not just hot chocolate, but anything that will help keep us warm. We went back to our place and got properly dressed, because we were going to go snowboarding! Abby and I were so scared, but it seemed really fun, so we decided to go. We took the cable car up to the Tatras, the mountains, and met our instructor. He taught us the basics of boarding, like speeding up, stopping, and turning. We all had to practice and once we got the hang of it, ... read more

Changing homes again. With all of this moving around, Abby and I are getting exhausted! But our trip isn’t over yet. Today, we ate breakfast at the house, and when we finished we packed our bags once again. As soon as we were ready to go, we were on our way. The couple led us to a town in the valley, between the Tatras Mountains and Gubalowka Hill; it’s called Zakopane. We followed them the whole way. (Whole way meaning six hours!) That’s right! It was a six hour drive! But the scenery was beautiful, from afar you couold spot the snow-filled mountains. Zakopane is known for housing Poland’s premier mountain resort. The couple helped us check into the place we were staying, it’s called Bambi Pension. It’s so cheap! It only costs 15 euros a ... read more

Coming from Alberta, I'm usually not overly impressed by mountains because we have the Rockies. C'mon, they're some of the biggest and most beautiful mountains in the world! But since Leszek was right about falling in love with Krakow, we followed his advice and went to Zakopane - a little resort town in the mountains. The town reminds me a lot of Banff (for those of you not familiar with Banff, it's a national park in Alberta and is where some of the Rockies are located) except that it looks more storybookish because of the old streets and houses. Just the kind of place you want to go when you need to get away from bustling cities. We arrived late at night after a rocky bus ride from Krakow and stayed in a hostel called Stara ... read more

Our flight was early in the morning and obviously wasn't direct to Zakopane. We landed in Krakow and from there took a bus to Zakopane. That was a very looong & slow journey. We got to Zakopane at about 7 pm and after a successful arrival we immediately forgot about the tiredness bothering us... we were amazed by this town - it was a little bit cold though, but beautiful and white. The taxi dropped us off by the gorgeous chalet we stayed at. It was a big mountain house with about 4 or 5 apartments - we occupied one on the ground floor. It was really nice. The house was actually situated right next to the ski slides, supermarket and restaurants, there was also a small market in the area. In the evening of the ... read more
