Two centuries of Viking raids into Europe tapered off following the adoption of Christianity by King Olav TRYGGVASON in 994. Conversion of the Norwegian kingdom occurred over the next several decades. In 1397, Norway was absorbed into a union with Denmark that was to last for more than four centuries. In 1814, Norwegians resisted the cession of their country to Sweden and adopted a new constitution. Sweden then invaded Norway but agreed to let Norway keep its constitution in return for accepting the union under a Swedish king. Rising nationalism throughout the 19th century led to a 1905 referendum granting Norway independence. Although Norway remained neutral in World War I, it suffered heavy losses to its shipping. Norway proclaimed its neutrality at the outset of World War II, but was nonetheless occupied for five years by Nazi Germany (1940-45). In 1949, neutrality was abandoned and Norway became a member of NATO. Discovery of oil and gas in adjacent waters in the late 1960s boosted Norway's economic fortunes. The current focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. In referenda held in 1972 and 1994, Norway rejected joining the EU. To be updated

I’m officially done with my research this summer. On Wednesday, I gave a final presentation of my study. As most everyone in the office is already on holiday, there were only five people there. It was good practice for a larger presentation that I will give when I arrive back in Tucson. I have learned a great deal this summer while researching. Nothing really ever goes as planned, and you just have to go with it. This has been a wonderful experience that has gotten my foot in the door of the research world. I will be continuing this study back [View Full Entry]

Kristiansand

Hi All! Well, what a past 2 weeks it's been I can tell you! Firstly let me apologise for not being in contact any sooner as the internet on the ship went down as we were travelling around Norway. Firstly, I highly recommend a visit to Norway. We're not talking sunbathing on the beach or party-nights but the breathtaking scenery is sure to move the most hardened of people. A glacier in one of the Fjords was an awesome sight. We cruised through this narrow passage-way slowly for the best part of the day, to take in the sights; clear blue [View Full Entry]

Tag 37: Arendal - Hamresanden, 72.66 km, Fahrzeit 4:36, Durchschn.

Thought I should try to fill in some gaps while Nigel was getting packed. Turns out the bus tour we booked has spent most of its marketing money in OZ. Of the 27 people onboard one was Malaisian, one was Canadian and then there was us. Really we couldn't have got a better bunch to travel with. It wasn't really a party bus like we had heard about other tours, only one person was a real alcoholic and despite them serving beer on the bus the only night they got really messy she was fine (experiance is a great thing). So [View Full Entry]

Also erstmal etwas Fahrradpflege.

Oh oh Lofoten

 Europe » Norway » Nord-Norge » Lofoten
Photos from the previous blog are up. I've made it to my end destination... well I'm at the hostel tonight 5km from Svolvær where I neet to be at 9.30am tomorrow to catch my bus to Narvik. Lofoten has of course been amazing despite a cruel northerly wind. Full report to come, here's some photos... Right here goes: So I eventually got to Lofoten from Bodo at 6am after the 1.45am ferry was delayed and delayed until about 3am. The ticket collector at Bodo was looking a bit stressed - apparently the ship was refueling - we could see it across [View Full Entry]

Tag 35: Stabbestad - Arendal, 90.79 km, Fahrzeit 5:17, Durchschn.

Early the 4th of July Cathrine and I drove the 5 hour long drive to Juvasshytta(1841m), and Galdhøpiggen(HP of Norway and Oppland). It might be worth mentioning that we killed a badger on the way.. Stupid animal ran out in front of the car, and no way we could possibly dodge it. Poor thing. At Juvasshytta we were definitely not alone! Grouping up with over 60 others and three guides, where two of them actually are Nepalisean sherpas spending the summer in Norway trying to sell of some trips to Himalaya. Dawa Sherpa has been to Evere [View Full Entry]
