Today started with a hilly run while Nigel biked. On his ride he discovered a quaint little bakery so after showering, we went to check it out and found some nice Norwegian pastries! Headed out later than normal and drove straight to the hike in Milde. We had trouble finding where to park so ended up parking at a nearby Botanical Garden. We walked through the lovely botanical gardens which is now owned and run by Bergen University. There were a number of special gardens within the park including a bee garden, a Japanese garden, a kitchen garden and a rhododendron garden, a cedar labyrinth and more. This garden is used to grow species from this area as well as all over the world. Some species are now rare and they are trying to keep them ... read more

August 2, 2019 If today is Friday, this must be Bergen. And what a Charming “Big City” it is! One of the first capitals of Norway (way back when). We arrived in town quite early and were at the dock before 7am. We both woke up a little “under the weather” – Christopher with his deep sexy voice and dry throat, me dealing with a touch of vertigo – just couldn’t get my balance nor bearings. Perhaps a bit of food will make it right for us both. I had eggs benedict (1) and sausage (2), Christopher had oatmeal with strawberries and a hard boiled egg. So- I’ve had some “situations” with the breakfast sausage (which, by the way are great and SO much better than bacon…not a bacon fan). Anyway…Typically I cut the sausage up ... read more

Started off with nice weather and a fun bike ride. Then we all headed out for a couple of scenic nearby hikes. The first one was called Ervikane and it was mostly along the shore of the coast. Then we hiked up a nearby very big hill along the Liafjellet trail. This one went up and up and looked out over the fjord. Both were really nice. Then back home for some lunch. After that we walked to the fields down the road from us and played some frisbee golf and soccer and football. A fun afternoon. Kind of a quiet day but relaxing. Kjottkakers for dinner (that is obviously Norwegian meatballs).... read more

Let the games begin! Since we are enjoying our first real sea day (FINALLY) it’s time for reflection, observation and a good old fashion whipping! Turquoise Lady is in front of us (we were here first…AGAIN) – just overheard from her husband “I think people should have to take a test before they vote…you know with questions like How do you use a hammer and what is it for” I. KID. YOU. NOT. My answer…”you don’t wanna know my answer” BUT….how about THIS for a question…Essay of course “in your own words describe what it means to be a patriot; is it patriotic to place party over country”? Please provide concise examples to support your conclusions. Now THAT is a question I can get behind!! We need to get people thinking for themselves again. This constant ... read more

Well, it rained quite heavily last night and continued through until morning. It was a light drizzle during my run but a comfortable temperature of around 20 degrees. The rain actually stopped around 10am so it was dry but overcast when we departed. We headed out around 11am along one of the narrower roads once again but we are getting used to them now. The first photo op was called Fossen Brutte and it was a spectacular waterfall. Actually, our timing was great as due to the rain overnight there were actually about 50 small waterfalls along the drive coming down from the mountains. And the big waterfalls we saw were flowing VERY heavily today! On to Steinsdalfossen which is another gorgeous waterfall where you can actually climb up to near the top of the falls ... read more

Cruise day 16 & 17 Last sea day, a cruise summary and arriving back in blustery Blighty 30th-31st July 2019 Breakfast and then walk a mile. Deck 7 is 1/5 of a mile in perimeter so we plodded circuits round there. The front end is a bit windy today and it was a bit of a challenge to battle through the headwinds. Sitting out on deck after was a bit chillier than recently but then we were heading down the North Sea. The Neptune Lounge is where the talks are and where people fall asleep as it’s so warm in there. We haven’t been in there since the second day, partly due to the falling alseep problem and partly because there have been better things to do. At 11am today though, the executive chef of the ... read more

Harstad, Norway The sun was up WAAAAAAAYYYY to early for this weary traveler! When I answered a call of nature at 3ish the sun, already awake and ready for its day, held sway over its domain. TOO. DAMNED. EARLY! We have blackout drapes and such, but there’s this small gap at the bottom on the right. GLARING SUN. OK – we are well within the Arctic circle at this point, we have reached Norway’s apex, it’s south from here on out. The landscape is reminiscent of a Lord of the Rings movie. Jagged mountain tops, Mountains rising haphazardly from the sea, small islands and even smaller islands connected by some manner, under the sea; perhaps they are their own mountain tops submerged beneath the Arctic and or Norwegian sea. Mesmerizing, to say the least. It’s a ... read more

This morning was another beautiful day. We headed out on the now familiar drive from Os to Bergen which is a lovely drive. After parking the car above the central bus station, we walked towards Mount Floyen and found the trail to hike up. There is also a funicular up this mountain but we chose to hike it. There were some very steep sections and plenty of stairs too. But I felt very safe the whole way. The hike was about 1 1/2 hours to the top at a leisurely pace with water breaks. At the top, we found Lake Revurtjemet and borrowed canoes and canoed around for about 1/2 hour which was really fun. Then we walked over to where the funicular comes up to take some pictures of the view which was unbelievable looking ... read more

Today is the last day of the cruise, as we disembark at Dover tomorrow morning. It is also a sea day, but being far from the coast it is quite windy so cool despite the sunshine. We did the usual deck walking after breakfast and wondered if the directional arrow ever changed. Glyn went to a cookery demonstration. He actually enjoyed it and didn’t fall asleep! I spent the time reading in the sun. Lunch was an executive buffet which meant a fancy display with fruit carvings, swan shaped bread and huge ice carvings. It was mostly fish and meat, so all I could have was bread and cheese, but it was very nice cheese. The afternoon was spent doing very little. Most holidays I go on, I’m absolutely shattered by each evening and knackered by ... read more
