According to Trude, the post office lady and a sign in the Info Centre, 30km from Flaam, by bus, in Laerdal, there is a shop for the hobbyist. I am off to Laerdal. Pay my senior fare of 41NOK, and take a seat in the front ready for more spectacular scenery. And then we enter a tunnel. And then a second one. Of the 30km to Laerdal almost 27km are inside a tunnel. The one tunnel is 24.5 km long, the longest car tunnel, in the world. From the bus stop can be seen the wool shop and more importantly a KIWI Mini Price grocery store. I need fruit as much as I need wool and even more urgently I need a toilet. All needs are met. The avocado is cheaper, there are grapes, tomatoes, sardines, chocolate ... read more

At 09:30 in the morning took the bus to Gudvangen .. On arrival walked down the road to the wharf and there waited for the ferry .. wandered about to a soon to be completed, when they get money, replica of a Viking village. Crossed a wooden bridge to get there. Because it was early in the morning there was a less than tissue paper thin layer of ice on the wooden planks. Was careful on the way up but on the decent the ice was indiscernible. The Doc Martins flew out from under me so fast I did not feel it coming. I landed on my padded ass. No pics of the sprawl! Only my arm seems to be affected. It is hard to put on my small backpack. Have not tried the big one ... read more

From Oslo to Myrdal to Flaam - 07:05 -13:20 October 8, 2009 I had picked up my train ticket after clearing customs the day before. Knew the trian was a level below Departures at the airport ... and of course went to the wrong track. Climbed back up ... I am carrying all I will own for the next three months on my back ... asked and was informed that there were two railway companies operating trains into Oslo Central Station ... clear as mud ... am on my way and reach the NSB track. HORROR!! First train of the big adventure and have already missed the %^%$# train. OK...back up the escalator to get a new ticket ... NSB does not open the wicket till 07:30. Talk to a man about off shore drilling ...finally ... read more

Again, I have been quite lazy when it comes to writing blogs (thank god I can roll the date back on this site :) The past few days have been very full. Thursday I took a train from Oslo to Bergen, on the west coast of the country. Norway actually reminds me a bit of Vermont with all the trees and mountains (did I already say this in a previous entry?) The main difference is the number of ponds and lakes. It´s really quite beautiful, especially considering that I´ve been fortunately enough to have beautiful weather for much of the week (typing with one hand and knocking on wood with the other.) The train ride from Oslo to Bergen took about 7 hours, however I got off the train in a mountain town called Myrdal to ... read more

Going from Bergen to Oslo, I took the ¨special¨route which includes a regular train, a special train called the Flambana which stops along the way at the points with great views, a 2 hr boat ride through the fjords, a bud around the hills and waterfalls, and a train to Bergen. Altogether took about 14 hours, but it was really pretty! Bergen is a small city - very quaint, quiet, relaxing. I would have loved to spend more time there but only had one day, half of which was rainy. When the rain stopped, went to the castle and top of a hill where there is an amazing view of the city and harbor. Stayed at a hostel and had a great experience! Met two Italian guys who ridiculed me for not putting salt in my ... read more

Wow, what an awesome drive from Oslo to Flam. The first half was incredibly beautiful, the second half even better. We went through so many tunnels and daddy and I would yell all the way from start to finish of each tunnel. Some of them were many miles long, and I became out of breath and laughing at the same time. After passing lakes and mountains we arrived at the first view of an incredible fjord, Sognefjorden, the worlds longest fjord. Wow, what a view. We pulled over and took lots of pictures. We then drove down the crazy, curvy road until we go to the base of the fjord and we arrived at Flam. This was the first time I ever went camping and I loved it. The tent was sooooo cool. Daddy pumped up ... read more

If you go to the small town of Flam in Norway, you will probably hear a strange rumour about Australian women. Apparently, they seem to lack the basic understanding needed to operate showers. And bath plugs. And doors. And windows. So this is an official apology to all Aussie women who are affected by this rumour: we are really, incredibly sorry that it started with us. But, in our defence, it was far more embarassing to us than you. *sigh* To take things back to the begining... We spent 5 hours on the train from Oslo to Myrdal (we took some pictures of where we could have potentially almost frozen to death on account of our messed-up accommodation), then caught the Flamsbana to Flam. The train ride was spectacular - we especially loved Kjosfossen Falls. Our ... read more

Thursday 4th September There is another contender vying with Norwegian post card photographer for easiest job in the world. Norwegian weather forecaster. If you predicted rain every day you'd be wrong less than 10% of the time which is a far better ratio than the venerable Michael Fish. No wonder Munch painted the Scream. Jesus, did it p1ss down today. Most days it has rained (the memory of a sunny day in Bergen all but forgotten) but at least to date you got the odd break in the rain and occasionally even a bit of sun, but today it just hosed it down all day. Set off from Ulvik towards Voss and even though I knew it was right out of the hotel decided to trust the TomTom which was showing left. Initially I was glad ... read more

Wednesday 3rd September Writing this blog seems to be the only way I can remember what day/date it is - by checking yesterday's entry - so I think it is fair to say I am now well and truly chilled. Woke up this morning and it was still raining - marvellous. Call me hypocrite of the century but I immediately re-booked to stay another night in my cell. The place has kind of grown on me - not the room, but the hosts are just so nice and the food is pucka. Maybe I am turning into one of those boring lonely sods I met on the boat and am only staying for someone to talk to - sweet Jesus, you all have permission to exile me somewhere up north if I end up like that! ... read more

Yesterday disaster struck. I'd just descended off my first big pass (650m up to the snow line just) in the freezing rain and wind - no probs. I didn't even take a break going up. On the way down my hands got so numb I could barely brake but I got down to the comparatively flat lake at the bottom just a few km from Voss when I somehow managed to crash in most bizarre fashion. I remember a car coming by me on the single lane road, and after that I looked around to see if there was anything else. There wasn't. I turned back around to face the road to find myself not in the centre but hurtling unavoidably towards a ditch. The bike flew, time froze. My face mashed into a spongy mossy ... read more
