September 2nd 2012

I had the opportunity to spend the night on Thursday and Friday at the two Puntos Corazon houses in Barrios Altos and Ensenada where the missionaries (from France, Honduras, U.S., Belgium, Switzerland, and Germany) live. Though only a very short time, it was beautiful to witness their community life, to be able to pray with them, and to spend time with the local people of the communities. One of my favorite moments was praying the rosary with the missionaries and kids in Barrios Altos. Though it was probably the rosary with the most interruptions and opportunities for distractions that I have ever prayer, it was amazing to see young kids (4-10 years old more or less) come to pray the rosary. One kid wanted to lead one of the mysteries but was not behaving well and ... read more

This past weekend, I went on a retreat with two of my roommates (Monica and Rommy) who are part of a Catholic group called Puntos Corazon (Home Hearts). The mission of Puntos Corazon is to bring compassion to all those who suffer, to those who wait for the Presence and friendship in the walk of life. Many of the members of Puntos Corazon go on a mission for 1-2 years in another country and live in some of the world's most desperate areas to accompany and share with the people. There are volunteers here from Argentina, Germany, France, Belgium, Honduras, Switzerland, and the U.S. - it was a lot of fun to chat with all of them and hear about their experiences. The retreat was from Friday to Sunday - all day Saturday was in silence ... read more

After my first month(ish), I was starting to doubt whether or not I really wanted to work in the development field, or at least whether or not I wanted to work abroad. It was kind of a strange feeling because I´ve always loved traveling to other countries and working in the communities and interacting with the local people. I wasn´t sure why I was feeling this way. During my other experiences, I never seemed to mind the material conditions, but here I was starting to get tired of the dust, the dirt, the lack of sunshine (I admit, that will always be a challenge for me if I live somewhere where it's always cloudy!), etc. It was really starting to worry me... I discovered last week that I think the main reason I was feeling this ... read more

Finally I'm going to write a little bit about what it is that I actually came to Peru for! I'm working with the Nutrition & Health Office for the NGO CESAL. At first, I was just accompanying the workers when they went to the communities to visit families and check in on health centers and schools. The past couple weeks, I've been given some more concrete responsibilities so that's been nice because I feel like I'm actually contributing a little bit. One of the skills that I really want to develop is monitoring and evaluation. For the current project in the Nutrition and Health Office, "Healthy Familes and Homes," they have to do evaluations every 4-5 months to see how the families are progressing. Luckily, July is one of those months! I have accompanied some of ... read more

July 28 - Peru's Independence Day! To celebrate fiestas patrias, I went with people from CL (Communion and Liberation - the Catholic Movement that I met in Denver) to a place about an hour outside of Lima called Cieneguilla. We rented this ranch/campground area and hung out all morning and afternoon - played handball, hiked to see some ruins, went to mass, sang songs. It was quite a refreshing day, not only because we got out of the city and saw the sun and blue sky, but it was also great to spend time with families and play with some kids. There was a goofy Italian guy who is visiting Peru and he sang some songs in Italian -- reminds me of my dear Italians friends in Denver :)... read more

A good friend from USC, Eddie, is visiting family in Lima so we met up to go exploring and decided it would also be a day for a "food tour." We went to the two main plazas (Plaza de San Martin & Plaza de Armas), a few churches (Santo Domingo, Convento de San Francisco, Casa de San Martin de Porres), and a park (Parque de la Muralla) See pictures for more descriptions. We took a tour of the Saint Francis Convent and Catacombs - my favorite part was probably the library filled with tons of old books. New foods that I tried - turrón (super sweet dessert made of layers of cookies and honey with sprinkles and candies on top), sweet potato chips, empanada de pollo, and rocoto relleno (sort of like a stuffed bell pepper, ... read more

Today, Lady and Ricardo (my current hosts) took me to a park that has 15 different fountains with lights, designs, music, etc. The main fountain has a "show" every hour with lights that make shapes and then show various traditional dances (accompanied by the music) from different areas of Peru. Quite a fun evening!... read more

First blog from South America! I've been in Lima for a week and life is good. It's winter here (60-70F) and always cloudy. Today, I finally saw the sun and a little bit of hazy blue sky and it was MARAVILLOSO! I'll write more details later, but work is good, the people are very warm and welcoming, the food is quite tasty, the people I'm staying with are taking very good care of me, etc. Works days are loooong - I leave the house at 7:45am and get back around 7pm (unless I go out right after work and then don't get home until 10ish). I love going to the communities (it reminds me a lot of Tijuana!) and meeting the families, learning about the program, seeing another way of implementing community development. I'm working with ... read more

Esperanza celebrates 20 years of helping low-income families to build strong communities and construct houses! We had about 35 U.S. volunteers, 30+ families from our communities, government dignitaries, and lots of friends join us for a wonderful celebration. There were videos, slideshows, kids jumping on the blow up bouncy thing, mechanical bull, speeches, delicious food, dancing. There just aren't words to describe how much this organization has done over 20 years and how much is has grown in the process. As always, I invite anyone who wants to experience it to come down and visit :) ... read more

A fun Friday night for Alysson (the other long-term volunteer) and I included ice cream, popcorn, and a movie! We watched Food, Inc - a documentary about the U.S. food system. But more than that, it touches on so many issues that affect the U.S. and the world (health, manipulation in the government, immigration, human rights, workers rights, disparity between rich and poor, the interconnectedness of every country and the world market, etc). I could go on and on about how I feel but it's probably better that you just watch the movie yourself. I know documentaries can have a slant to them and not tell the other side of the story (and I haven't done my homework to check the accuracy of the film), however I still highly recommend the movie as it really makes ... read more
