Life in Luxembourg...there is also so much more to my experience here in Luxembourg besides just my weekend travels. A host family, classes, and public transportation take up my days during the week. In my host family I have a host mom, Claudine, a host sister, Mandy, a host brother, Yannis, and 3 dogs, Serko, Ricca and Saphira and a cat, Dutchess. They all are very welcoming. They have been hosting students for the last 13 years. They take two students every semester and over the summer as well. Claudine and Mandy speak English pretty well and Yannis and Kursh, Claudine's boyfriend, do not speak English as well so we use Mandy mostly to translate for us. Mandy is 19 so it is nice to have someone our age who we can hang out with and ... read more

Well so I thought it would be smart to go to Amsterdam central and catch a train at 3:45 am to Luxemborg. After 2 train changes where I nearly missed the connection because we had to wait at Brussles Nord - right before the station for 45 minutes as there was something wrong with the track, I finally made it to Luxemborg at 10:36am. This time I was couchsurfing with a girl, her name was Benedicte. She was really cool. Originally from France, and also having lived in Berlin, she was living in Luxemborg for the past 2 years. I had a lot of fun with her. I initially asked if i could come and she show me around the city, but I had so much fun with her that I ended up staying the night! ... read more

Last Thursday we went to Nancy, France for a school trip. The city was really cool. The entrance was all gold lampposts and decor. The walking tour was really cold, but it was interesting to see all of the arcitecture. It was really cold so when we got the chance to go in banks and see the design we all took up the tour guide on the offer. After the tour we had 30 minutes to walk around...that didn't give us enough time to get back to the part of town with all of the shops so we picked up a warm waffle wiht sucra (sugar). It was so good...it went down like a hot KrispyKreme doughnut. But then we had a few minutes and it was cold so Emily and I decided to walk around ... read more

So I have arrived in Luxembourg! We have spent the last few days doing orientation activities with school. We have had to sit in lectures on different aspects of the culture, family life, and school and also had the opportunity to visit/tour different cities in Luxembourg. I went on a tour Lux city half by bus and half walking. We got to see where the Duke lives and where all the shops and cafes are in the area. We also went to visit the WWII museum and listen to a lecture on Luxembourg involvement in WWII. We have learned so much and gotten to see so much so far. I have figured out the train and bus situation too! I have very early mornings, but it is all worth it because I'm in Europe!! I get ... read more

Tiny tiny country. So small I even neglected to mention it when writing my Ardennes entry :D Ok, it's not as small as Vatican City, which happens to be the smallest country in the world, but it's about 1/4 the size of Puerto Rico, smaller than even Rhode Island. However quite powerful. Over 200 banks, many of them categorized as "Secret" or "Private". While higher in taxes in some areas of business, the many allowances, deductions & exemptions are an interesting draw to many concerning the Luxembourg tax regime. As one can imagine they are presently VERY busy with their attempts to handle the financial crises across the globe. However, while the building slowdown becomes evident in even the more financially viable countries, this little country shows no slowing in bank building. Huge structures springing up ... read more

Well it didn´t take us long to make our way through Luxembourg, being that it is smaller than the smallest US state. As we experienced Luxembourg City and the beautiful countryside, we were intruiged by the mixture of French and German language and culture. What language do they speak here? While sitting on a bus we saw three: most of the ads were in French, all of the signs telling you to 'be good!' were in German, and the "Bus Stop" sign was a mysterious hybrid. In fact, the official language is Luxembourgish as well as French and German. Now, I (Sara) learned French in High School and some German in College. I suck at both, but if I could speak with a mixture of whatever word, French or German, comes to mind first, I could ... read more

We arrived in Maastricht quite exhausted from our 65 mile goose chase for a place to sleep. We wolfed down our dinner at the Youth hostel buffet and although it was a bit humiliating, but we just couldn't slow down until we were uncomfortably full. That night we talked about how most of our day was spent cycling in order to stay on schedule. You see, we didn't have a really accurate map when we were planning our itinerary and we seem to have significantly underestimated all of our daily mileages. It was cheaper to buy our maps in Europe. However, we know now that it is better to buy them in advance and pay a little more. We could go on racing to keep up everyday, but we decided that we would like the ability ... read more

Greetings all, from Luxembourg. There is not much to report about today as we didn’t really do much except travel on Autobahns all day from Ulm in Germany to Luxembourg in Luxembourg. I saw a Ferrari on the way and thought I’ll take a photo of that and put that on the blog to keep the masses around the world unfortunate enough to subscribe happy!! Other than that I didn’t take any photos because the autobahn is not that interesting. Over and out. ... read more

With bags packed, rooms empty, and very few people left in Haus Erasmus, it was a very strange feeling on July 1st. Knowing it was all over and we were just hours away from leaving our most loved city left an empty feeling. Last goodbyes and a last kebab were in order as James and I made our way to Westbahnhof to begin a whole new adventure. This was the start of my Eurotrip but the last of my time in Europe. We were about to embark on a monster train journey to of all places …Luxembourg! The first of our trains took us to Salzburg where we enjoyed our last Ottakringer. Pity it was warm. We then took our next train to Munich where we connected to a train heading to Koblenz. This was our ... read more
