With bags packed, rooms empty, and very few people left in Haus Erasmus, it was a very strange feeling on July 1st. Knowing it was all over and we were just hours away from leaving our most loved city left an empty feeling. Last goodbyes and a last kebab were in order as James and I made our way to Westbahnhof to begin a whole new adventure. This was the start of my Eurotrip but the last of my time in Europe. We were about to embark on a monster train journey to of all places …Luxembourg! The first of our trains took us to Salzburg where we enjoyed our last Ottakringer. Pity it was warm. We then took our next train to Munich where we connected to a train heading to Koblenz. This was our ... read more
It is impossible to put into words the feeling and emotions of being in Vienna in June. Euro2008 brought the city to life and gave us all the experience of a lifetime. Having the chance to live in the host city was amazing. The colour and emotion brought by sixteen nations was something to experience on its own. The first game, in Vienna, saw Austria take on Croatia. Dressed in our rot und weiss, we ventured to the Prater to warm up for the game with a relaxing hit of mini golf. Coming off the U-Bahn in Praterstern was our first glimpse of what the next month held. Croatians filled the station with singing and horns. They were banging on the U-Bahn carriage as we arrived and then parted a way for us to exit as ... read more
A breath of change came over Vienna and the exchange lifestyle in May. The weather became pleasant to scorching, I actually had class, and the buzz came around the preparations for Euro 2008. In order to join in the festivities of Euro 2008 we organised a sweep where we would all get a team. I was lucky enough to pull out Niederland (Netherlands) and only time will tell just how lucky I was. All advertisements around the city involved football. Flags were hanging from cars and every product you would buy (especially Ottakringer) somehow involved the Austrian National Team. It was too hard not to get excited about the championships. The thought of the massive fanzone being built in front of the Rathaus was the biggest excitement with the opportunity to watch all the games with ... read more
The time had come for the second leg of the CEAFL and the Schnitzel Cup in Vienna. After poor results in the previous leg staged in Zagreb, the Austrians were out for redemption. The sun was shining brightly on the gaelic stadium in Atzgersdorf. A strong crowd of wives, girlfriends, parents, friends, exchange students, and nosey people gathered to witness what was an excellent display of footy. The first game kicked off between Austria and the Czech Republic with it being tight for the entire match. The extra legs on the bench for Austria sawthem get over the line by 4 points. Croatia A then took on Croatia B in a somewhat practice match with no points being considered during Croatia B's matches. Croatia A then had to step up again in a points match against ... read more
I had been training with an Aussie Rules team in Vienna, the Vienna Kangaroos, for a number of weeks and the first of the Central European Cup Tournament's had arrived. I travelled with another Aussie ex-pat, Jimmy, in his car from Vienna to Zagreb. The trip took us through the WeinStrasse near Graz and into Slovenia. Travelling through Slovenia was an amazing sight with clear skies, steep mountains, and green everywhere. This was probably the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. After 4-5 hours we finally arrived to destination Zagreb where we were playing 9-a-side football on a soccer pitch. A good concept to teach some of the Europeans the basics of the game and to allow a free-flowing game. The sky was clear, not a breath of wind in the air, and an excellent ... read more
The last of my trips with the WU's Buddynetwork departed on the 25th of April. At 7am we all met in front of the University and jumped on a bus for a 6 hour trip. The bus trip kicked off with a beer at 7:15 with a Tequila shot following. A few beers later and very little on bus excitement, we pulled up for a piss-stop. Cal and I went looking for a good place to piss when we walked over the hill and were pissing looking down into a valley with a river running down the bottom. It was the best view ever. On our way back to the bus Cal noticed he had some shit or sirt on his arm so he decided to wash it off with orange juice, soap, and leaves. We ... read more
Ok, I thought it was time I wrote some more about Vienna as although I have done a lot of travelling, and still have a lot more to do, Vienna is still my favourite city and a city that will forever be close to my heart. I hope this entry gives everybody an idea of life in Vienna and what an average week in Vienna has for me. The photos have been stolen from all my friends and hopefully this allows you to get to know some of the people I am experiencing this amazing journey with Vienna is a city rich in culture with a very laid back lifestyle. Everybody rides bikes and the city is pedestrian friendly. There are an abundance of parks, museums, art galleries, and cafes which makes the city have an ... read more
After one of the greatest weekends to date in Haus Erasmus, me and my friend Michael from Minnesota embarked on Espana. With no concrete plans and a handful of blurred information from our Spanish friends we ventured to Bratislava, Slovakia to catch our plane. RyanAir has a hub in Bratislava which is only a touch over an hour out of Vienna. It may sound strange going to another country to catch a flight but thats how close travel is in Europe. We found the direct bus from Wien to Bratislava Airport where Michael bought a ticket but when I tried to buy a ticket they tell me the bus is full. So we scrapped the bus idea and made a mad dash to the train station to find the next train to Slovakia. The train left ... read more
The first trip with the WU Wien Buddynetwork began on friday the 27th of February. Waking at 7am after a 5euro all you can drink party (red bull and vodka) in the Haus Erasmus partyroom the night before was quite difficult and was quite noticeable by the excitement or should I say, lack of exciteent shown on the bustrip there. After a sombre 3 hour bustrip we arrived in the wonderful city of Budapest which is not to be confused with Bucharest, home of the brave dog! Budapest is split into two sides with Buda being the ideal residential area due to its steep mountains, lack of businesses, and dodgy cup games on top of monuments. Pest is the other side, both sides being split by the Danube, where most of the businesses are located. We ... read more
I got back safely from Romania. Had a great time. 10 of us flew into Bucharest sunday. We took the wrong bus and finished out in the slums where there were stray dogs and broken down houses. Luckily Romanian people are generally nice and speak English so a guy told us how to get back to the city. Once we got in the city it took us about 3 hours to find our hostel because we had ten people giving 10 different directions. A guy we met walked us all the way to our hostel and we offered him some beer but he declined. Once we found the hostel we had an entire room to ourselves which was good. Also had our own balcony. We went touring around the city and found a heap of monuments ... read more
