San Gimignano was one of the coolest places ever! It is a very small down up on a hill, and from just outside the walls there are the most beautiful views of the Tuscan Countryside! The majority of the original Medieval Walls are still intact as are most of the buildings. It is a very small village and you can easily imagine knights and maidens and peasants walking in the streets. My favorite part was seeing the tiny little craftsmen shops along the streets, and many of them still maintain their original functions! for example, I went into a little shop filled with woodwork! everythin from spoons to furniture, all hand-sawn and carved! it was absolutely wonderful! We only spent a few hours there on our way home from Siena, but it was so worth it! ... read more

Looking at the future, without forgetting the past. Your travelling experience is with you, guiding your choices, reminding you of your past vacation, trying to avoid mistakes, sharing contacts, pictures, impressions... Let's start with my last year's holiday "Under the Tuscan Sun".... Great! I should go back to Tuscany (but not this year, maybe next year.... ) My wife and I, we spent a week in the area of San Gimignano, a medieval hilltop town (in the picture). We rent a villa with breathtaking views of gorgeous coutryside with vineyards and olivegroves. A private villa is a perfect base to explore the area ... read more

Went for a drive this day. Was the best thing as it rained a lot. A bit more challenging driving on country roads and I stalled a few times when having to take-off on an incline. The parking brake is a button, not a handle, which takes a bit of getting used to, especially when you want to move off quickly to get out of the way of impatient Italians (slowly learning not to care). First stop was a town called Voltarre. Eileen decided she and Daniel would go to a Museum of Torture, and that I should take the girls to a Etruscan Museum. Boy did we get draw the wrong straw. I can safely say that that was the most boring museum I have ever visited - and the girls whole heartedly agree. Sorry ... read more

It was a perfect day in Tuscany…all though I’m not sure I thought it would be at the beginning. We awoke to clouds and eventually rain…the kind of steady, soaking rain that a person knows we sometimes need, but not on your vacation. We asked for a recommendation of something to do that was not too far away and the ladies at the front desk suggested a village pretty close that had a castle. So, off we go with Dennis at the helm and “Bella” navigating the way. We found the town, but the castle was closed and apparently so was tourism for this year. We tried to get some help from a very unpleasant little man, to no avail, and then left. It was pouring rain anyway, so it was not very much fun. We ... read more

From the vine of the grape—Tuscany was born. We departed Florence late on Sunday morning in pursuit of our next destination, the island of Elba. Never heard of it? Not too surprising as it perhaps best know in western hemisphere historical circles as the place where Napoleon was exiled in 1814 or so after he was ousted from power. The poor guy was allowed only 600 men to keep him company. He did however help the island by carrying out reforms both socially and economic during his 300 days. Thus endeth the history lesson. Oh yes, Napoleon's stay on Elba is the basis for the famous English language palindrome: "Able was I ere I saw Elba." Alright…now we’re done….really. To modern day Europeans, it is a quiet and lovely island situated about an hour’s ferry ride ... read more

Today was a great day!! We decided to have a “take it easy day” at the hotel and shopping in San Gimignano. We had breakfast, dumped photos from the camera, read books out in the yard, had a leisurely lunch and just relaxed. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we enjoyed just taking it easy. Around 4 pm, we drove to San Gimignano, did some shopping, took some photos, and had dinner. The food was probably the worst we’ve had since we have been in Italy, but it was ok. Life is good in Tuscany!! ... read more

Today was a perfect vacation day in beautiful Tuscany. The day began with Dennis telling me that he had really messed up his phone. While trying to get an email update from Tim regarding the Alabama football game (which was in the middle of the night here), he entered the wrong password into his phone the maximum number of times. This caused the phone, out of an effort to prevent fraud, to wipe all of the info from the phone!! So, he has no phone or email for the rest of our trip!! Yeah!! We had breakfast at the Hotel Pescille, took a long walk, read books, I took a nap, and finally we left the hotel to visit a local town, Volterra, around 3 pm. We had a fun time walking through this very old ... read more

What a day today has been!! We began with a sleep-in day in Rome. We then got dressed, had a leisurely breakfast, packed our things, and checked out of the Hilton Cavalieri. What a beautiful hotel!! We got a taxi to the train station, arriving almost 2 hours before our train departed. The train station was lovely, but we did not really know what we were doing. Fortunately, we found some English speaking ladies with experience and finally the Information kiosk. We boarded our train for Florence at 1:20…our scheduled time was 1:15, so we thought this was really good!! The trip to Florence was seamless. This was good news because then the adventure began. First we had to find the Hertz rental car place. The person at the Info booth in the Florence terminal gave ... read more

This morning we left the hotel, all excited and anticipating the day that lay ahead. Mostly because this was our winery tour day. We had been told that the tasting would involve pairing wines with various foods from the region. The bus travelled up some long, winding roads, and stopped us outside a gate on a hillside. We had arrived at the Castello de Verrazano. We walked through the gates and were in some little piece of heaven. Butterflies floated past to lang on lavender and lemon trees. Bees buzzed around a central fountain, while the red and white roses climbed taller than most of us. The Castello itself is built in traditional Tuscan style and was absolutely gorgeous to look at and walk through. The gentleman (Gino) giving us the tour was smart, funny, and ... read more

I’ll admit it. I was getting tired of travelling. I was still loving Italy, loving everything we were seeing and doing, but walking into the luxury hotel at San Giminano, enjoying their buffet breakfast, knowing that the town was so small we didn’t have to rush to anything - it made me realize I was kind of tired of roughing it, and kind of tired of sightseeing, and kind of tired of the pace travel requires no matter how slow you take it. That, and we had received the official word that our house had closed and everything went smoothly, and Sam’s mom was minding the shop. All of it kind of made me a little homesick. But we had more to see, and as tempted as I was to sit on our gorgeous balcony all ... read more
