It's the last day in Italy for us and we started the day out early to get to San Gimignano. We took the public bus for around $5 Euro about 2 hours outside of Florence. San Gimignano is a romantic Tuscan hill town surrounded by vineyards and beautiful countryside. This particular hill town is known for its medieval towers. The town use to have nearly 60-70+/- stone towers, however only a handful still remain. In order to get to San Gimignano by public bus system you have to stop and transfer in a town called Poggibonsi. It was quite easy to do and a nice little ride through Tuscany. Italian drivers, including the buses are maniacs on the road and it amazed us how this huge bus was able to navigate through the narrow streets of ... read more

The Pastry shop? Yes, the pastry shop. In fact, the owners of our little apartment-room also owned a pastry shop, which was where we went for check-in, payment of our stay, and often mass confusion when encountering their gruff, Italian only speaking shopkeeper. However, this was by far the best B&B yet! Our own apartment, with a view of endless vineyards and rolling Tuscan hills! The town itself it filled with medival architecture - towers, templar churches, and gazillion-year old buildings. Its beautiful there. Greg flipped out over the endless supply of fancy olive oils, wild boar proscuitto, buffalo's milk mozzarella and wine! This was definately the relaxing part of the vacation. Not too much sightseeing to do, just enjoying our stay. However, I was sad to find out that the bike rental shop was closed ... read more

Under the Tuscan Rain Clouds Europe » Italy » San Gimignano By michellemanireMay 4th 2007michelle manireMichelle and I left Florence for beautiful Tuscany today. Dr. Abas took us to an incredible wine vineyard in San Gimignano for wine tastings and a homemade lunch complete with cheeses, breads, and homemade lasagna prepared by the Sommelier's Mom. After the enormous amount of vino, we drove to a Medieval Village (San Gimignano) where we took some amazing pictures. It was spectacular. Enjoy.... ... read more

Day 5…Getting to San Donato Up and on the go early in the morning we said our farewells to Florence and headed for the train station. Our next destination was a farmhouse/vineyard located in San Donato, a tiny medieval village located about 5 miles from San Gimignano, in the heart of Tuscany. With the two of us being wine lovers (especially Chianti/Sangiovese) this destination was especially exciting for us. Arriving here however proved to be a little more difficult than anticipated…and not because I never researched my butt off before we left! First we had to get the train from Florence to Poggibonsi. No problems here. After waiting in Poggibonsi for a while for the bus (where we discovered why there is such a big fuss over Gelato…mmm…Gelato) we were off to San Gimignano. The sights ... read more

Bonasera... Missed a day, but that's life in laid-back Italy, time is not important. We had a beautiful walk up to the medieval village yesterday morning ending in San Gimignano -- a walled village with 17 towers still standing, all dating back to around the 13th century. We then proceeded to Monteriggiano (sp?) for a bierra or espresso. Today, we've spent the day in Sienna which is a quaint university town with a large piazza at its center. The weather still has been holding with clear skies, warm temperatures and cooling off in the evenings. There are lots of tourists still around in October and we can usually get by even with our rudimentary language attempts. Until the next time. We have lots of photo's so far and will put them up on the website afterwards. ... read more

What a great night's sleep I had! I actually had to pull out the blanket from the armoire as it became freezing cold in my room. I wasn't about to mess with the thermostat and maybe knock out the a/c. I sleep best when I'm a little chilly anyway. We had to get up early (7:00 am) because we were leaving early in order to drive clear across the country to Florence. Normally it would take a little over 3 hours to drive straight through but remember that the bus driver has to get a break every two hours. I met Gail and her Mom in the breakfast room. Gail is quite thrilled with these breakfasts since she normally eats cold cereal at home. Gail's mother was hoping for some bananas at least but the only ... read more

It is hard to believe we have come to the end of our time at Castellina in Chianti and will head to the south of Italy tomorrow. We have had a busy week fitting in the things we wanted to do before we left. We revisited our shopping mecca-The Mall on Monday and purchased a few more items to add to our already excess baggage. It’s lucky we don’t have this in Australia! Tuesday we had a scenic drive to Volterra which lies in the hills of Tuscany. It is a walled town and is the major producer of Alabaster, a white stone. It has Etruscan origins which makes it a very touristy place. From there we drove to San Gimignano which was a favourite spot. It too is a walled town in the hills and ... read more

ok and then on sunday we got on the bus and stopped off in san gimignano for a few hours on the way back to rome. there really isn't much going on in this town except for good wine, good olive oil, and torture museums. it's a medieval city and has greeeat buildings. it's also known for it's towers. at one time this little place had something like 72 towers in it. there are only 14 left, and we climbed to the top of the tallest one. it was an overcast day, but we still had a breathtaking view of the surrounding tuscan hills. i've decided that when i'm rich, i'll have a country house here. i picked it out and everything. and i'll get my exercise by climbing up the jilions of steps to the ... read more

After leaving Siena, we stopped by the midieval town of San Gimignano. The town itself is a upward hill, and we were only given 1 1/2 hours in the city. This was just enough time to make it to the top of the slope, enjoy the view, and then return. The view was nice though. :)... read more
