Jason and Susan Higdon

Susan and I "got together" in 2004, after being best friends since our early teens. In the past 3 years we've developed a passion for travel, going first to England and Paris in the spring of 2006 (where we got engaged), and Italy for our honeymoon in the Spring of 2007. Summer 2007 we visited New York City and camped in the state of Maine. Next stop? Manchu Picchu, Peru; or possibly Victoria Falls, Africa...whatever the case, we hope to travel the world together throughout our lives!

Day 12...beers and Capri We arrived in Sorrento on an overnight train from Venice. The train was a little rough, and sleep was minimal, however the moneys sove from the night's accomodations proved great for some nice "made in Sorrento" in-laid wood souvenirs. The train from Naples was a little dis-heartening, with young children begging for change while their parents looked on, and constant warnings of pick-pockets. Susan was feeling a little uneasy, and I admit so was I. However, upon arriving in Sorrento she quickly understood why I insisted we add this location to our Italian Honeymoon. After checking into our hotel room (Hotel del Corso - just off the main square) and getting cleaned up we walked down to the marina (Piccola) and enjoyed a couple of cold beers while taking in the wonderful ... read more

Day 8…Venice or Bust…or Florence Clean Clothes and Souvenirs We awoke in San Donato, ate one last breakfast in the cellar, said our goodbyes and called our trusty chauffeur, Claudio. The plan was to get a lift into San Gimignano and bus back to Florence the way we had come 3 days before. From there we were to carry on our Italian tour with three nights in Venice. From the start things started to go wrong… Claudio informed us that today, being a public holiday (Labour Day), the local busses from San Gimignano to Poggibonsi might not be operating. When we got to San G, we found that he was right. Oh well, all was fine (so we thought), as Claudio agreed to bring us to Poggibonsi, where we would get the train to Florence, and ... read more

Day 5…Getting to San Donato Up and on the go early in the morning we said our farewells to Florence and headed for the train station. Our next destination was a farmhouse/vineyard located in San Donato, a tiny medieval village located about 5 miles from San Gimignano, in the heart of Tuscany. With the two of us being wine lovers (especially Chianti/Sangiovese) this destination was especially exciting for us. Arriving here however proved to be a little more difficult than anticipated…and not because I never researched my butt off before we left! First we had to get the train from Florence to Poggibonsi. No problems here. After waiting in Poggibonsi for a while for the bus (where we discovered why there is such a big fuss over Gelato…mmm…Gelato) we were off to San Gimignano. The sights ... read more

Day 3...The Road to Florence After an early rise we checked out of our Rome room and headed for the train station. Our coins were thrown in the Trevi, so our safe return was guarenteed. The two hour train ride was enjoyable, with great views of the Tuscan countryside and distant hilltop villages. When we arrived in Florence we headed straight for our hotel (Hotel Andrea) to drop our bags. Being too early to check into our room, we had a glass of Chianti in the lobby, cleaned up a little and headed out for the afternoon. First stop was Jimmy’s Trattoria for lunch. Our first taste of Tuscan cuisine was great. I had the best bruschetta and mushrooms ever and Susan had a salad, followed by a pizza each. (Italian pizzas are "personal size"...but built ... read more

Day 1...Covering Rome on Foot We began our honeymoon in the Eternal City. Our overnight flight from Canada arrived in Rome at 11:00 AM, and we quickly found our way to the airport-termini train, which zipped us into the centre of the city. It was very hot for us getting out of the airport (maybe 25 C), as we came from Newfoundland where there was still a chill in the air and snow on the ground. After a little fooling around and some swearing on our roller bags (cobblestone everywhere!) we found our accomodation...38 Viminale Street BnB, a great place to stay and I recommend it to anyone (without kids!). It was around 8-10 min walk from Termini. I think the excitement of finally reaching Italy after so much planning chased away the fact that we ... read more
