Geo: 43.4703, 11.0438They label this medieval walled hilltop town the "Tuscan Manhattan", and you will soon see why. From a distance we assumed San Gimignano would be an exciting place to visit. However, initial appearances can be deceiving. All total we spent about three to four hours here and did perhaps one hour of sightseeing. The remainder was spent finding a place to park and eat, the latter including each of us greedily consuming a gelato from the best ice cream shop in the world with awards to prove it. Yes, the ice cream was good.As for the rest of the visit, Bird labels it "just okay", which translated means none-to-good. We took maybe one or two adequate pictures but will burden you with seven. Tomorrow we are off to Siena.... read more

Searching for Dana First I want to say I’m sitting in San Gimignano at the Doumo Plaza sipping on my wine writing this blog. Kirsten is shopping at the shops next door. A street performer is playing and singing. I’m one step closer to heaven. Well our day started around 8:30 AM, Kirsten and I are just waking up. I slept so well and so did Kirsten. Not to mention the liquid sleeping pill I drank. Also, the bed was a marsh-mellow. Today we decided to continue our exploring of Padua. We drove into town along with all the tourist and folks that are going to work. Beep, Beep, grinding gears and screeching of tires. We finally found a parking place. I’m so starved that I jump out of the car and started looking for a ... read more

I wake in a cold sweat. Today we'll be driving. I've always had a bit of an obsession with climbing things, particularly hills and tall buildings, so I decide to spend the first part of the morning climbing the Cathedral Dome. Issy doesn’t share my obsession so she stays at the hotel. The queue to get in is several hundred metres long and looks like it will take at least a couple of hours to clear so I decide to climb the Bell Tower instead. This is a separate building next to the Cathedral, and has only 413 steps compared to the 462 to the Dome. I hope that the thousands of people in the queue to climb the Dome don’t know something that I don’t and that being 49 steps lower won’t mean missing out ... read more

Lari & San Gimignano in Tuscany Region Italy 11 & 12 October 2013 After leaving Florence we headed for something that the Tuscany Region is famous for – a pasta factory. We had read that the oldest pasta factory was in Lara which was about 45 kms S-W of Florence. The Martelli Family established the Past Factory in 1926. It is a quiet little town in the Tuscany Region. We parked our motor home and walked to the centre of the town, asking locals where the factory was. Of course everyone knew where it was. We were directed down a little lane and a lady who was hanging out from a 1st floor window told us to know on a particular door. There was no result so she shouted out “Lucca” several times. After awhile, this ... read more

Years ago, I’d been told by George LoGrasso, an Art teacher at Loreto Normanhurst, that his favourite place in Italy was San Gimignano. Since then, I’d been keen to visit this place and today we took that opportunity. As it is difficult to reach easily by public transport, we decided to do the 1½ hour drive through the picturesque Tuscan countryside. The day was quite mild, although rain was forecast for the afternoon. Approaching San Gimignano, you can see the village and the multiple mediaeval towers for which it is famous set in a patchwork of olive orchards and vineyards. We parked relatively easily just outside the walls…the usual hordes of summer tourists have all but disappeared! When we arrived almost everything we wanted to see was closed for lunch and in the case of the ... read more

Sunday Oct 21st Went on a tour to San Giamignano, Siena and a winery. San Giamignano was the favorite. It is a small walled city little changed from medievil times. At least in the look of the buildings. 13 fortified towers still exist. Like old Florence there are few if any cars. Siena has a large piazza and its own Duomo. It is ornate but not as large or impressive as Florence and the dome is not very visible. The winery was fun. Learned how balsamic vinegar was made too.... read more

In the late afternoon was a special excursion to San Gimignano. We really regretted not taking a cab from Piazza della Repubblica to our hotel. We only had about 40 minutes to freshen up after an active day in the historic district and a long walk back. In the event, shortly we were off on the motorcoach to San Gimignano. The Tuscan town is sometimes called the "Medieval Manhattan" due to its numerous tall towers. So we could gain an idea of its skyline, the coach stopped at a point where we were able to view the entire town and its skyline. Arriving at San Gimignano itself, we entered the town through the Porta San Giovanni. As we made our way along Via San Giovanni It was becoming quite overcast with rain threatening. The street was ... read more

Day 37 A lazy day today. Wake and do breakfast (yes, food again but when it is included and you get choices of fresh meats, cheeses, freshly picked cherries or apricots it's hard to knock back......). Decide to just visit the township of San Gimignano. Another walled city but this one has lots of towers. These towers differ from others we have seen as they were built to show off rather than for protection from invaders. Originally there were over 20 towers, each taller and grander then the other. There are now only 7 left, but when you look around the area lots of houses have their own little tower (the place we are staying has one). Some shopping and then back for domestic duties and a swim. Meet 2 Dutch couples around the pool and ... read more

Day 35 Happy birthday Stephanie. We send a Viber message at midnight our time so it gets there early on her birthday. Wake up and go upstairs to the WiFi to Skype home for birthday wishes, etc. Connection good and Stephanie, Charlie and Jessica are on screen. Greeted by Charlie saying in surprise that he could see poppy and nanny. Good to talk and see all of them. We speak for about 20 mins finding out what has been happening at home. Not missing the cold and wet..... Get organized and leave for the day in Florence which is about an hour away. Get good advice from the receptionist at the farm (they are all too happy to help which is great) and get to the Piazelle Michelangelo where we park the car for free. This ... read more
