Today we have a long day of travelling to Alghero in Sardinia. Our train looks like it goes straight from Tours to the Paris airport, so we won‘t have to endure any of the Paris stations. This is a good thing. We’d heard that Gare du Nord is generally regarded as one of the most dangerous places in Paris. When we went through it last week it seemed to be well populated with some fairly desperate looking types of every race, colour and creed. One man wanted well over a hundred dollars to take us about five kilometres in a taxi, and I’m pretty sure someone tried to pick my pocket as we hauled our luggage around in the searing heat. Montparnasse station wasn’t much better. We sat down to have a drink and a snack ... read more

Christmas presents this year for our parents were flights to Sardinia. The six of us, Magdalena and her parents plus my parents and I, would have six days exploring the north of the island. We definitely wanted to go to Italy; mum and dad had never been but had always wanted to and the rest of us had been and like it a lot. But we wanted to go somewhere new for all of us. Puglia or Sicily proved impossible to find flights from both the UK and Poland that landed at the same airport on the same day whereas in Sardinia, Olbia to be precise, we could land within a few hours of each other. The title of the blog, “holiday”, suggests some type of escape from stresses of everyday life. However, I needed a ... read more

31st July Cagliari One last push Our fourth port in four days and I think we might be getting a little jaded. Still onward and upward, literally, Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, and sits in the Gulf if Cagliari. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily. Our walk took us up to the heights of the Elephant and St Pancras Towers. Both towers dominate the city, the Tower of St Pancras has massive white masonry whist the Tower of the Elephant still has its battlements and portcullis intact and has become a symbol of the cities past glories and achievements. A lot of renovations being done and coupled with the number of tourists make it a very busy place. Our goal was the Roman Amphitheatre, elliptical in shape, set in a ... read more

For a long time, my fiancé and I kept planning to go on a romantic vacation but we had no idea where would make for the perfect destination. We didn’t want to visit any of the usual suspects like Hawaii or Belize or Ibiza, and we were really stuck until we found out about Sardinia. It’s a little island in Italy and since we’d never heard of it and all the reviews we came across sounded promising, we started making plans to visit Sardinia. After that first visit, we intend on going there at least once every year until we’ve had enough and I doubt that’s going to happen. Since accommodationreally nice resort Le Dune in Forte Villages down on the South Coast below Cagliari. Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and we figured by staying ... read more

Today Ron and I started from Olbia, Sardinia in a 4x4 with a couple from New Zealand and headed first for San Giacomo, an are off mountain dirt roads where several old churches were built. The tour had a rest stop there with Sardinian wine, cheese and prosciutto. Next we went off road agian to the tomb of the giants, a several thousand year old stone tomb with giant stone monoliths guarding it. then it was on to a beautiful little village called San Pantaleo which had a nice piazzale overlooking a beautiful mountain escarpment. From there we went to the resort town of Porto Cervo, originally founded by the Agha Kahn in 1962 and now a very upscale resort town of multi-million dollar villas and top designer stores. It was a god day and the ... read more

Blog 3 – The Guymers at Bourg d’oisans in the Rhone Alps (near Grenoble France) and then onto Chamonix, Sardinia and Geneva The mighty journey continues and of course the boys by now had developed a taste for their favourite food. Lucas became a baguette fan, Liam just drank litres and litres of 'nilk' and Flynn ate any chocolate that was available. Across the week the Bike Culture riding outfit was spotted a few times as our houseful of riders attacked the Alpe d’Huez mountain climb that is regularly part of the Tour de France. Tim and Jodie, Carla, Scott and Adele all managed the13 kilometers, climbing approx 1,000 meters vertically via 21 hairpin bends. The climb is relentless and when the riders reach the final bend the headwinds usually start. At this point they are ... read more
