Today was a late start! Didn't leave for Santa Margherita until 1pm - guess we're getting into the Ligurian lifestyl! Santa Margherita is, of course, beautiful. It's much bigger than the towns we've been in the past few days but no less charming. We really don't think Italy can do any wrong! Now back to the notion of S. Margherita being larger. When I say larger keep in mind it only took us a couple of hours to explore it and then we decided to take the boat to Portofino, another small but beautiful Italian town. The difference with Portofino though is the $$$ it attracts. The boats are like Jimmy's (Pattison) +++ and the quaint little stores of the other towns in Liguria are replaced by Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Cartier. It's laid back wealth ... read more

After a wonderful dinner last night at a restaurant perched high above on a cliff, we headed back down the many steps to find that an Italian band playing Pink Floyd covers had set up by the water. We ordered a bottle of wine (yes! John and I shared our first bottle of wine ever together!) and sang along with the band. They were actually pretty good and the crowd was right into it. They wrapped up around midnight so John and I wandered over to some rocks - I later learned he had the walk and place all planned. We sat for a bit just talking and the next thing I know John is proposing! I don't even think I said yes right away - I was too busy crying and hugging the life out ... read more

Our first sleep in Vernazza was a little disruptive between the clock tower in front of our window that rings every hour and half hour from 8am to midnight to the late night revellers in Piazza Marconi which our room looks over. Didn't matter though because it would take a lot to change either of our minds about how superb this place is. We took the 3 minute train to Monterosso this morning. It's the biggest and busiest of the 5 towns but it was by no means "busy" by our standards. It has the largest beach in the Cinque Terre which is the primary reason for its draw. Plus, its the first town so many people start the trail between Monterosso, Vernazza, Coniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore there. While in Monterosso we stopped for a piece ... read more

Today ended after 7 hours of train travel but the trip was breathtaking. It took us along the Mediterranean coast through Nice, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Genoa, San Remo, Santa Margharita Rigure to our final desination, Vernazza , in the Cinque Terre. We had to change trains in Monterossa, literally 3 minutes from Vernazza. John personified the Incredible Hulk by jogging with both our 40lbs suitcases through the train car when we discovered at the last minute that the door of our coach wouldn't open! Actually, John did a great job with carrying the bags up and down ALL the stairs in each station - we had to change trains 3 times!! So, first impression of Italy? We both LOVE it. It is everything (so far) that I've dreamt of. The language around us is like a ... read more

It's sort of late to be updating this, but it must be done. The weekend started with a trip to Florence. Part of the group did the obligatory David thing, and Melis and I did the leather market thing, having already seen the David. Then there was some Duomo action and some restaurant action (everyone else seemed to really like our restaurant but i ordered the bad dish). The next day we hit up the Ponte Veccia... wow I can't spell. Then the train took us to Cinque Terre. We had some dinner and did some relaxing, after the boys went to Pisa to see for sure that the tower really did lean, and then headed to bed. The hike was Saturday. It ended up being about 8 or 9 miles after our detours. We decided ... read more

sorry about the previous entry's title everyone. you all got a little bit excited but i really was only meaning the towns!!! sorry to disappoint. i will be coming back!! still been having an awesome time over here. it's been very relaxing. except for yesterday when i did the big walk from the first town where i'm staying (riomaggiore) to the fifth town (monterosso) along the coast. it took us about 4.5 hours but it was an awesome walk. an absolute killer because there's about a thousand billion steps but it was definitely worth it for the views. am going to have a recovery beach day today and sunbake on a rock. the boulders are better than the "beach" because you don't have to keep pulling the smaller rocks out of rather uncomfortable places!!... read more

this place is amazing. it is by far my favourite. the beaches are gorgeous - even though they're rocky, i don't care. we got here yesterday and are staying in the first of 5 fishing villages - riomaggiore. we have an apartment for 7 of us and are having a massive cook up tonight with about 17 people. yesterday we dumped our stuff and went straight to the beach for about 6 hours, then went out for a beautiful seafood dinner. i'm in heaven. it was so yummy and so much fun with 13 of us. today we went to the fifth village - monterosso, the sandy one. we hired snorkling gear and had a look around the ocean floor. it was an amazing day. on the way back we kind of got on the wrong ... read more

Ok I got free internet here in Rome and Im tired as hell. Cinque Terre national park on the Ligurian Coast of Italy is where weve been the past 4 nights. Last night we had a stop in Sienna but saw nothing due to a bus strike, hence the reason why we're in Rome a day early. Anyways, Cinque Terre was amazing. Mom and Dad youll eat this place up. Cinque Terre is five small villages hugging the coast with warm clear water and mountains covered by forest and vineyards shooting up to the sky....We hiked swam and walked around eating pizza and focacio for 3 days... read more

I'm in love. The five tiny fishing villages - "Cinque Terre" - on the Italian Riviera charmed me from the moment I got into Riomaggiore. I'm doing a consolidated entry for my two nights there (not nearly enough), because I didn't really feel like taking time to write yesterday, and because internet access is astronomically expensive in these relatively remote villages. Some of the practical stuff first for my friends and family who've never heard of this place. Cinque Terre (literally "five lands") is a series of 5 small villages on the Italian Riviera. They are, in order from south-east to north-west, Riomaggiore, Manorola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. The whole area is a national park, and the five villages are linked by a series of hiking trails. The one connecting Riomaggiore (which is where ... read more

071705 Leaving Paris... heading for Bath England.... but first, I went from Freidrichshafen Germany to Levanto Italy near the Cinque Terra on the Italian Riviera. I remember the ride through Switzerland and Northern italy in the Alps went through a LOT of tunnels. Seemed to me half the route was spent in a tunnel. It's an interesting experience because you'll be looking out the window at one scene, and then everything goes black. Then seconds to minutes later, very abruptly, an entirely different scene pops into your eyeballs . I remember one time riding by a fun-fair (amusement rides) and then going black, only to see it again from much higher and further away. The train had circled the mountain in a tunnel on it's way up to the pass across the gap. I'm amazed at ... read more
