I am lying a little bit about the dates. It is actually June 6 right now, and I'm in London, but I am going to lie about our adventures for the next week as far as where I am updating from because I had very little access to computers in that time. So, after getting done in Rome, we leave for the Cinque Terre early in the morning to hopefully get there for an afternoon of hiking and an evening of chilling around on the beaches in the Italian Riveria enjoying the sea and delicious seafood. Some of that was accomplished, but definitely not as we had planned. We get to La Spezia, the largest big city near these 5 small villages, knowing we need to get to a completely different small city called Biassa, where ... read more

Hi All Cinque Terre is amazing. The coast is great, its rocky, lots of good, hard hiking. Alex is amazed at the rocks and the lizards which he keeps trying to take pictures of. Had a great supper last night at Tratoria Billy, saw the sunset. Good breakfast too. They grow lemons here the size of grapefruits. Yesterday we hiked from village to village. It was fun but tiring today we are hanging out by the sea after our morning hike through the hills over looking the sea. Slowly learning Italian. Ciao Sarah and Alex... read more

After a long delay, we're baaack! Sorry to be so long dropping the other shoe and finishing up, but things just had to be prioritized after our return to the US. One of the last places we visited on our world cruise was the coast of northern Italy, where the boot of Italy joins the European body. Venice was on the eastern side of the boot top, and our new destination - Porto Venere - was on the western side. Porto Venere used to be the site of an ancient temple to Venus dating back to pagan times, from which it takes its name. There are tall colorful houses along the wharves, almost like Venice, but then the land rises steeply to an old castle on a rocky point above the city. The English poets Byron, ... read more

Cinque Terre was very beautiful just like a postcard, 5 little villages with colourful houses jotting out from the cliffs its difficult for me to explain in words soon i will put some photos on this site so you can see. It was so cosy that it felt like i was walking in someones house, the locals went about their business and the tourists walked around with their rick steves books in hand. I was so lucky on be there during the week and had a few moments wandering around feeling like the only tourist there. It must be crazy during the high season. On the second day i hiked between the 5 villages, a relatively easy hike and i just followed the path. The place is World Heritage protected and tourists have to pay 3 ... read more

We're now at the sun-drenched beaches of Italy's hidden Cinque Terre: five perfectly preserved fishing villages, surrounded by vineyards and the sea. We'll make Vernazza our home base. Cinque Terre — Ahh, time for a 'vacation from our vacation.' You couldn't see a museum here even if you wanted to! This is simply traditional Italy, with nothing to do but hike through the vineyards that connect the five villages, hang out on the beaches, swim, and lounge around the town with the locals. ... read more

Cinque Terre is a must see for any traveler or tourist. It's a bit "touristy," but it's worth it. Stay in the southern most town. It's a picturesque group of five villages built into the cliffs along Italy's western coast. The nicest restaurants, the nicest beach, and most stuff to do is at Monterosso (the northernmost town), but I preferred staying in Riomaggiore (the southern most village) because it was quieter but not too quiet like the middle three villages. You can walk/hike between all the villages in an afternoon or take a 10 minute train ride. There's not a lot to do here but eat, drink, and absorb the beauty of the Med, that's probably why I liked it so much.... read more
