Damn I just lost an entry i was working on ! Very annoying. Yesterday we drove out to the CLIFFS of Moher . They truly are an awesome site . The weather cooperated although the wind was freezing . Fortunately I had all my layers . I certainly am getting my walking done on this trip . A lot of it is uphill or up many stairs . It will seem tame when I return to the gym . This tour is titled the Highlights of Ireland which means we are doing quite a lot of driving . Fortunately our bus is very comfortable , has WiFi and charging docks and we make "technical stops " every 2 hours or so .The countryside is lovely . Very green in spite of this summers drought and scorching ... read more

Ireland the North 2. Day 7. Sligo Another day of forgetfulness but not me today. One of our guys left his mini rucksack in the cafe in Ballysadare. This was not discovered until we got to Sligo and fortunately Bill was with his car and he slipped back to collect it. Another lady had a sore knee joint and rode in the car most of the way. Bravo Bill. The weather has been kind again today with a few showers, most of which we missed, and with sunny skies for a large part of the day. Following the coast to Easky we noticed a great number of houses and buildings abandoned and the replacements were very expensive looking. Ireland has some lovely thatched cottages, a number of which we saw today, along with some very colourful ... read more

July 20 Up at 6:30. Luggage to the bus at 7:15. Breakfast at 7:30. Bus pulls out at 8:30. This is the first time we haven’t had a buffet breakfast, but the menu was still pretty much the same, with the addition of pancakes and French toast. Today I had French toast with fresh fruit and cream cheese. Our first goal today was The Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher run along the west coast of Ireland, in County Clare, for about 8.6 miles. They reach a height of 600 feet at O’Briens Tower. It is so beautiful! I even climbed O’Briens Tower and took pictures from the top! One thing i particularly liked about this site is the way they built their gift shop, restaurant, and bathrooms. They were all built into the hillside ... read more

Day 6 – Friday 10th June We moved on again today, heading south along the west coast through Co. Donegal. Susan took the wheel, and we passed peat bogs, with piles of peat turfs drying. Unfortunately, the weather was grey and damp like so many days in Ireland, so I’m not sure how dry they would have been. After a while, the satnav took us down a narrow, windy road, which turned out to be very different from the roads in Canada, and Susan decided I was going to do some driving. Having been brought up driving around similar roads in the English countryside I managed OK. We both commented on how tidy and clean the majority of houses we passed looked, with spotless paintwork, newly mown lawns and no visible detritus lying around. The roads ... read more

Ireland Thursday June 2 Breakfast at 7.30 for an early start again as rain is forecast all day, but with a slight benefit of a tail wind for most of the day. Today we are heading for the Riverside Hotel in Sligo. Luckily the forecast changed a little with rain just in the afternoon so we had a morning with a tail wind and the occasional glimpse of sun. The coast road was undulating and quite pleasant looking out to sea with little islands just offshore in the Moy estuary. There were murals of sheep at a smallholding at the roadside. I stopped to take a photo and an old lady (actually younger than me) came out and offered us a cup of tea. Lovely people. We later had a very good coffee and piece of ... read more

Day 04 We left our cozy B&B for the Slieve League Cliffs. You pass though a gate, which you much open and close like on a farm, because there is livestock grazing freely on the green grass. Gorgeous views on the way up, and on the way down from the Cliffs. We saw someone’s peat drying, some little lambs, and very pretty scenes. On the way to Sligo, we stopped in Donegal to see the city, and pop into some shops to see what the local economy was like. Most of the day was driving and seeing more of the Wild Atlantic Way route. Some roads today were busier than the roads we have been on so far, but still not too crowded and very scenic with farms, homes, small towns and lots of sheep, some ... read more

Time for a piece on the West of Ireland. It seems to be a a general rule that people often take what they have for granted, in this case the culture and beautiful parts of their own country for granted. I remember one instance where I was in Medellin in Colombia and a German guy from my hostel remarked the Cliffs of Moher was one his favourite places in the world. It kind of startled me a little as Cliffs of Moher is only 2.5 hours from where I live in Ireland and yet I'd never been. Therefore myself and Mags decided in 2015 we would be heading Whest to explore the Wild Atlantic Way! SLIGO Sligo kind of accidentally ended up on the itinerary. We had intended to go to Mayo but when we heard ... read more

In Ireland you won't find: Garbage bins- and yet Ireland is very clean.. but if you are looking to throw away some garbage - keep on looking Lights in rural homes at night.. as we drove on those dark narrow roads we saw no lights illuminating the homes - maybe they are sitting in a back room or maybe they just go to bed really really early. Sidewalks- we've come to think that only the very wealthy cities have sidewalks.. Pretzels - I love to see what they have in the junk food section of the supermarkets -i looked and looked but couldn't find pretzels anywhere. when I asked if they sell pretzels the response was:- is that something from Germany? actually I THINK it is. you will find donkey's grazing with the horses and sheep! ... read more

Hello! Today was a travel day. We left Galway this morning and headed to Sligo. We made one stop and that was at Kylemore Abbey. We got to see the Abbey, the Gothic church, and the garden. It was pretty cool. The Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey after Mr. Kylemore passed away and no one else wanted to maintain the grounds. They turned it into a boarding school. The school remained open until 2010 when they had to shut down due to structural reasons. In 1994 they began restoring the garden. They finished restoring it in 1999. It is gorgeous! After the garden we went to the Gothic church. There was suppose to be a choir but they did not show up. We waited for a little bit, then we went to the gift shop and ... read more
