The bed in our hotel room has been very comfortable so we have both slept well and we don’t wake till the alarm sounds. It’s looking a bit grey outside but then it looked that way yesterday morning too. We enjoy a great breakfast before bringing our bags down ready for our campervan adventure! At 10 on the dot, Iris arrives to take us to collect our van. We are given the low down on all the dos and don’ts to ensure we won’t come back to a stack of parking and speeding fines. We are also warned about the dire consequences of driving through rivers or letting the wind (which is fearsome here) rip the van doors off! We are handed a tablet which is the sat nav system and also a communication device between ... read more

Landed successfully, at 7:30am, grabbed our luggage and some duty free so we could have a night cap then we waited for Wild Campers to come pick us up. He was running a little late but arrive to the big smile and some excellent suggestions on killing some time before our blue Lagoon visit. We went to the wild campers logs where are you tall young man told us all about the van and the roads in Iceland. He and his wife both the company and a small campsite right next to the office building. Inside the office building he has a self serving breakfast bar where axle grab a coffee. Just on the hill there are four or five contemporary looking cottages that he rents out. After finishing all the paperwork and everything that needed ... read more

V podstate musite vlozit kartu, zadat PIN, zvolit, kolik chcete natankovat a vytahnout kartu. Az potom muzete vzit pistoli a zastrelit serifa... teda nakrmit Salamandra. Vyrazime k vodopadum Gullfoss. Asi jako the Mountain oproti Impovi, Golias oproti Davovi, Vasina oproti Ondinovi... no, chapete me, ne? Voda ve vodopadu pada (co by taky mela delat? Tancovat cardas?) dvoustupnove ... read more

After a 9 hour flight on some insanely thin chairs (Wow Airlines) we made it to Iceland. Smooth flight but not much sleep. We did the inverse of what most itineraries I read recommend. We started at Blue Lagoon - an amazing geothermal hot spring / public pool with a warm mix of ocean water, glacial water, algae and silica. Spent the first day relaxing. In fact, the first day never really ended (by my typical definition of a day). As of 11:08 PM the sun is shining bright and you can barely make out the full moon hovering over the horizon. Here's some pics: ... read more

I What would motivate an otherwise rational human being to return to Iceland in the frigid throes of winter? Well, I love being treated like a Viking King. I miss truly great Scandinavian cooking and of course those ethereal Danishes. I loved that there was no queue at the Icelandair ticket desk and the hot meal in flight – Icelandair’s Swedish meatballs - would be the beginning of my Iceland-plumped belly. Maybe I need the recurring rehabilitating high of travel to Europe. I was almost refused admission to the country last year when I arrived in Keflavik. NATO has closed down the airbase since my last visit sending 20,000 American troops packing (much to the delight of Icelanders everywhere.) Now, water is banned from entering the country. And when we get off the plane, we not ... read more

Sun Shining on the Blue Water Pack up, check out and straight to the Blue Lagoon. It's a 20 minute drive from Reykjavík and we got there right about the time they opened so it wasn't overly crowded yet. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located in a lava field, the water is rich in minerals that are super good for your skin. Our package included the use of robes and towels, a free gift bag, a free drink and face mask. Basically you just show up, walk into a super posh Euro showering/changing hotel and then walk 20 feet onto the deck of the most gorgeous hot spring pool. The water is HOT and feels great after the dumb weather of the last few days. It puts every spring that we've been to in ... read more

Oh. My. Gods. (I know, I know. It’s the same joke, but it’s worth doing again I think). We’re on one of the moons of Jupiter!! Europa I’d say by the look of it. Don’t quite know how it happened. We were just driving down the 1, when all of a sudden, we were on Europa. That’s the last time I trust SatNav! Strange alien rock formations. Pools of blue water (molten ice due to the tectonic forces as a result of Jupiter’s gravity). Thin oxygen atmosphere. We’re in Grindavik, about 12 miles from Keflavic airport (which is handy as we have to be there at 6:00 in the morning). Sky not looking too good at the moment, but the forecast is sunny for tomorrow and they say it’s going to start clearing around 2:00 in ... read more

A bus day. Starting with a very quick tour of the city (the city isn’t huge and big buses aren’t allowed in the tight inner-city streets). A stop at the imposing and austere Hallgrimmskirkja. It is the tallest building in Iceland and dominates the city landscape. Lutherans aren’t exactly renowned for having fun and this shows both on the inside and the outside. We pass myriad monuments to Icelanders – it doesn’t take much for them to drop a statue or devote a building in memorial to citizens who in other countries would be otherwise forgotten. After the city tour, we head out to the Reykjanes pensinsula, back towards the international airport at Keflavík. For the record the consonant combination 'fl' is pronounced 'pl' in Icelandic. So it is pronounced Keplavik. You are starting to sound ... read more

Some stories begin in the middle and work their way backwards ……this story begins on day two of our trip with us soaking in the healing waters of the Blue Lagoon, Iceland discussing the events of the previous two days. The Blue Lagoon, along with the excellent hotel of the same name would prove to be the best medicine for these two weary travelers. These waters are heavenly and the rich mineral content of sulfur and silica are said to have medicinal value, especially to those suffering from psoriasis. We found them to be utterly relaxing and if they do indeed possess extra value due to their content, all the more reason to hop in and enjoy. The waters are courtesy of the nearby geothermal plant, which takes the vented water from the ground all for ... read more
