This morning we don’t have to get up too early because we are camping very close to our first two visits and we’re not travelling too far today either. We start at the Gullfoss Falls which are amazing. We start on the top viewing decks and then wander down to the lower deck, fully prepared for a good soaking but suitably clad in full waterproofs. Now we retrace our route back to Geysir…which we passed last night but we’re too tired and muddy to care. The bubbling cauldron here erupts about every five minutes…and sometimes there is a follow on blow. It’s a bit different every time. Some folk are climbing a steep hill to view from above but we don’t have the energy. We return to the van for an early lunch then make our ... read more

Our hotel in Vik was on a former farm. Dinner at Hotel Katla was served in a grand buffet. There was a soup and salad bar to start. Then there were the hot dishes, including fish, pasta and reindeer meatballs. There were cold sides. Cod Liver Oil is always available on every breakfast or dinner buffet in Iceland. A range of dessert pastries completed the dinner service. Today would be only a half-day's coach drive as we would be retuning to Reykjavik around 11:00. But there were still more of Iceland's wonders to see. A landmark in Vik is the Three Trolls rock formation (Reynisdrangar). They are in the sea and and are said to represent trolls who froze. The rocks are an extension of the Reynisdrangar basalt cliffs. Basalt block similar to those seen at ... read more

Leaving Hotel Jökull near Höfn Hoffellsjökull, a part of Vatnajökull was in prominent view. Vatnajökull is Iceland's largest glacier and it, or its subsidiary outlet glaciers like Hoffellsjökull, were visible all day. Iceland's may rivers and waterfalls have their origin in glacial runoff. As we continued our drive along the south coast of Iceland, several Caribou were spotted. Herds stay in the highlands most of the year but come down to the coast in summer. Reindeer were introduced to Iceland in the 18th century. (The animals are known as Caribou in North America and Reindeer in Europe.) They are hunted for food during a limited hunting season. At the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, we saw another product of glacial action: icebergs. A marvelous sight here were the icebergs calved by Vatnajökull floating out to sea. They were ... read more

Palasimme mantereelle laivalla klo 14.30-15.10. Paluumatkalla laivassa olikin paljon vähemmän väkeä. Ajoimme Selfossiin. Halus... read more

Käytiin Systrakaffis... read more

Oli jo kesäisen vehreää.... read more

We began our day waking up in the freezing rain and howling wind that had gone on for most of the night. May is considered shoulder season in Iceland, while considered technically summer to the locals, its still late winter by all reasonable accounts and the weather is highly variable. But the trade offs are no hordes of instagramming tourists and buses of cruise ship travelers. We hiked up a few miles up into the Reykjadalur Valley, meaning “steam valley.” The valley was dotted with billowing steam vents as far as the eye could see ,amongst snow capped peaks-truly capturing the namesake of Iceland as the land of ice and fire. Our destination was a natural hot stream to bathe in the waters , what a way to start a day, and the first of many ... read more

In 2018 Mom and I came to Iceland as part of a long layover coming back from Scotland that Iceland Air offers as part of their fares. We had about 36 hrs, long enough to do the 140 mile golden circle drive and to go to the blue lagoon. Truth be told we weren’t overly impressed, but I heard that to really see the beauty of Iceland you needed to drive the entire ring road around the island. That along with 50% off ticket vouchers from that first trip that were expiring, and Dennis being incredibly jealous of our trip, I decided to come back again and give it a better look. We arrived at 0600 after getting a few lousy hours of sleep on the plane leaving out of Newark, having left AZ that prior ... read more

EPIC day of glacier-related adventures. We have experienced a number of glacier ‘outlets’ today, none of which I have any hope of pronouncing, but all stemming from the big one that google tells me is called Vatnajökull. Started early, amid a high level of feedback, and related response. Drove for a few hours through the ‘wasteland’ where the mud/flood from the 1918 eruption had made its mark. And then, just as suddenly, we returned to fertile farmland. Arrived at our tour check in and got kitted up and headed off for our glacier hike. The first part was hot and boring as we walked through the rocky terrain the glacier had created at its front and sides. We finally reached some of the cold white stuff and learned to put on our crampons and how not ... read more
