The number 1 line of the Budapest Metro was the first subway to be built in the continental Europe. The emperor of Austria and Hungarian King Franz Josef was the first to ride. It was built to celebrate the millennium of Budapest in 1896. It is a short line the runs the length Andrássay utca and the stops hit many of the major highlights of the city, such as the Franz List Museum, Opera House and Heroes Square. We spent most of the day going back and forth seeing various sights. Franz Liszt Our first stop of the day was the Franz Liszt Museum. On Saturday’s they also have a short concert at 11 am. The museum is part of the Museum Academy which Liszt helped found and served President all his life. During the last ... read more

The trained arrived in the station at just before 1 pm. When we stepped off the train we were greeted by 2 things both not pleasant. The first, and most noticeable, was my dear friend humidity. I do not like humidity; fortunately it wasn’t Deep South or Chicago humid. The second thing was the obnoxious taxi hockers. The literally tried to take your suit cases out of your hand before you even got off the train and wisk you to their waiting taxi. Between Jerry and myself I am pretty sure we said no about 20 times. The train station is under some serious renovation and it took a bit to find the main lobby. Once we found that I went inside to covert some Euros to Forint’s while Jerry had a smoke. The guide book ... read more

In the last week of April, my mum and I spent a few days in Budapest. It had been my birthday present for mum’s 70th birthday – as always an absolutely unselfish present (I had never been to Budapest before myself and was eager to go there ). We stayed there from the 27th of April till the 1st of May. Mum and I met at the airport in Munich, she had flown there from Stuttgart, I had come in from Hamburg, and we continued to Budapest together. We were in our hotel there only shortly after noon, so we had plenty of time to start exploring the city. Our hotel was on the Pest side of the city, not far from the Freedom Bridge. Budapest actually consists of three cities: Buda and Obuda on the ... read more

After a quick three hour bus ride from Vienna, we arrived in Budapest and proceeded to find our way to our next host. We had struggled to find anywhere to stay in Budapest but at the last minute, Moni, fom Couchsurfing, came to our rescue and offered us a couch and a very comfy beanbag for a couple of nights. The first night a few of her friends came around and they cooked us some delicious Hungarian food accomponied by a couple of shots of Palinka ( a traditional Hungarian Spirit) which had been made by her mother. After a good sleep in the next morning we headed out for a wander around Budapest to find a Langos and Catch up with Janos, a friend of Erics. Budapest is really very stunning.

Day 38 in Europe - Feeling Hungary in Hungary, Budapest - January 20th, 2013: Hey Hey Hey! Guess who's in Budapest! After around a 4 hour Charter Bus ride we head into Budapest from Brno. The first part of the town is super run-down, and the very first thing I see when getting off the bus is a gigantic pile of Puke waiting on the ground to greet me. Likewise, the first picture I take in Budapest is that Epic pile of Puke! Lol. We then take the Metro to our Hostel Area, and that area is a lot nicer. We get into the Retox Hostel at about 2:30, and are immideately greeting by one of the workers with his face completely painted to look like Braveheart, and another dressed up with Fairy Wings. We didn't ... read more

New hotel, new room to get used to, I guess I slept ok. It had snowed a little overnight, nothing really settled though. Went downstairs for some breakfast, it was really strange, there was a big range of foods - pasta, rice, goulash looking stuff…odd! We just had rolls with Hungarian chocolate spread and yoghurt. There weren’t many people downstairs for breakfast, so we sat by ourselves, Pam and Lauren came down shortly after and sat with us. Today’s itinerary started with and early coach tour to the parliament buildings with a Hungarian guide – she was a bit hard to understand but she was very knowledgeable and nice. We had to wait outside for a bit and it was a little soggy but there was a nice memorial statue with a nice fire on top, ... read more

The coach journey to Hungary was pretty uneventful – there were actually people at border control this time although they didn't say anything about lack of visa for Slovakia. Fiona and pretty much everyone else on the coach fell asleep except me, I ended up chatting with Chris and Emma which was nice :) We got to Budapest but I can't remember what time. We had a little drive through the city – it was much more crowded than Vienna and doesn't look so organised. It was a bit misty and couldn't really see the surrounding hills well – suspect it looks better on nicer day. Chris dropped us off at Hero Square and we all walked down to Museum of Torture – war museum which really didn't appeal. Apparently Fiona could have got in free ... read more
