Up and ready to go at 9am and the transfer driver was early which is kind of unusual for anyone in Greece ! Once again we are traveling on the Highspeed 5 fast boat ferry, but it is only a short 30-45 minute trip from Ios to Santorini. We arrived at Athinos (the new Fira port) port in Santorini around 11am. The port was crazy busy! We lost Alice in the pandemonium of disembarking the ferry. We found our driver and eventually met up with Alice . To leave the port you drive up an incredibly steep road with hairpin turns and tight switchbacks all the way to the top. The buses barely fit and some cars had to back down the road when they met a bus at a tight corner. We got to our ... read more
up until this point in our trip, my expectations of what this trip would look like were completely off. in italy, we spent more time running from sight to sight, and less time meeting new people. because we camped, we were somewhat secluded from the rest of the 'hosteling world.' but here it is different. Greece has been more of our relax and have lots of fun (not that we didnt have fun in italy, because we totally did, but it was very different) part of our trip. we sleep in, stay up late (nightlife doesnt shut down around here. Mykonos people are in clubs until the sun rises in the morning, and Santorini, things close around 4 or 5am.) Our hostel is perhaps the epitome of hosteling experience. We are in Perissa Beach, Santorini, which ... read more
Sick in Santorini and International dating
Published: June 12th 2007Europe » Greece » South Aegean » SantoriniJune 8th Its been exactly 4 days since my arrival at my new apartment which is exactly as long as my ass has seen clothes. In pure spite of the absence of people I rebelled in nudity and self-lovin. Sorry for the visual dad. I didn't make any decisions on wether or when I leave but it looks like a season in Santorini is a safe bet. That way I could hit South Africa after the winter rather than in the peak of it. With that in mind my journals of action and adventure would be limited to a dull summer of sun-work-sleep, sun-work-sleep, and so on. I've spent the last few nights serving cocktails at the local pub which is very satisfying, not to mention entertaining. I remember the days working at a bar ... read more
Well here I am - nearly at the end of my 6th week here!! How time flies when you're having fun!! Have had a few nights out, some of the photos from one of them are on the website www.photoshow.net/callefix. I'm in the background of some of them, the site does take a while to download them all if you're not on broadband and it takes a while to get through all of them, so would not suggest you do it it work time!!!!!!! We had a day out in Afandou last week (there was another girl from the bank over on holiday - won't divulge her name!!), went to the beach during the day and had a swim and sunbathe and then went up into the town at night with the idea of having a ... read more
So here we are about a week before we head home and I'm finally used to the whole live-out-of-a-backpack, sleep-in-a-different-bed every couple nights, and wear-the-same-5-shirts deal. It's officially life instead of a vacation . . . wierd!! Santorini and Greece in general are great! Very different from our whirlwind tour of Italy. Since the beginning of this trip I had the Italy travel book and Jen had the Greece one, I think that may have something to do with why we saw a TON of stuff while we were in Italy and we are relaxing in Greece. :) Jen and I have discussed this many times . . . we think part of it has to do with being tired and we just don't care about seeing every city's "National Archaeological Museum," plus you can ... read more

Ios is known as the party island of Greece and so far we’ve mostly seen the town at night, but today we planned to explore the town during the daylight. Chora, Ios’s main town is a typical of the Cyclades with whitewashed buildings and is full of steps and small alleys, curtained doorways and small courtyards. On the main thoroughfares there are the jewelers, souvenir shops and, of course, the clubs. Ios has lots of churches; as a matter of fact it claims to have 365 churches, one for each day of the year. In Chora in a plateia just off the main road is the modern Orthodox Cathedral of Ios named Evangelismos (Annunciation). It’s an large whitewashed building with the traditional blue domes, very beautiful. Nearby is the church of Agia Ekaterini. First we picked ... read more
We have had a good day here in Naxos. It is getting hotter now and the winds have subsided so we really have to be carefull of not getting sunburn. We didn't get here until after 11am. We have been taking the high speed ferries and they have been great to travel on...less motion over the sometimes rough seas, plus they are faster as well. Thankfully when we arrived there was a bus here from our campground here at Maragas. We are about 20 minutes out of the main town of Hora. We were going to camp in one of the tent cabins, but we found a studio on the same grounds for only 2e more so we took it....it still is not very nice and we feel like we will have another mosquito evening attack ... read more
Ios - Homers Tomb? and even more clubs - Day 7
Published: January 14th 2010Europe » Greece » South Aegean » IosWe decided to drive out to what is allegedly Homer’s Tomb in Plakotos in the Northern part of the island today. The road was partly paved (oil and gravel) and part dirt; weird. Homer’s Tomb is on a point of land surrounded by hundreds, maybe even thousands of bee hives. When we got out of the car the buzzing was really loud. You walk out a long trail from the parking area to Homer’s Tomb. There’s an ancient stone engraved with writing, but really no other information there, basically just a stone tomb overlooking the sea. We probably only stayed about 30 minutes or so, the view was spectacular but there really wasn’t much else there. Steve built a little stone structure because he wanted to and I got a picture of it. We headed back ... read more
We decided to rent a Suzuki Jimmy which is like an open jeep with a soft top. The rental agency picked us up at the hotel and took us down to the port to sign the papers and pick up the car. The receptionist at the hotel told us that the best beach on the island is Manganari Beach . On the map, it looked like it wasn’t too far, about half the island away lengthwise. However, because of the mountains and the way the roads went, we had to drive way up to the top of the island and then all the way back down the other side to get there. The road was tortuous and it took forever, I had to kind of take it easy as Steve felt hung-over and car sick. It ... read more
Milos We were one day delayed arriving in Milos after our flight was cancelled although it didn't matter much, Olympic airways putting us up in a pretty nice hotel. After a short flight on a very small plane (much to my horror) we arrived . We stayed in Adamas which is a pretty little port town, a few km's down the hill from Plaka, the capital. Visited some beautiful beaches; Papafragas, Plathiena and Paliochori in one day with a little car we rented. Another day was spent wandering about town and at Lagada beach while Brendan and Paul scooted around. Had some of the best Greek food we've had so far. Visited the ancient roman theatre that is in pretty run down condition but offers spectacular views across the water. Milos is a beautiful little ... read more
