Our decision to visit Santorini was initiated as follows. Jonathan: "Where should we go after Mykonos?" Zara: "I don't know. What's another really Greek island? How about Santorini? I've heard of that one." Jonathan: "Too far. What about Naxos? Hang on, I have to check my e-mail." Naxos was described in our guidebook as a beautiful island with magnificent beaches. Santorini a magnificent island with beautiful beaches. No help from Lonely Planet. But Jonathan found the answer in his inbox. Stan and Amanda, two Aussies we met in Italy and traveled through France with, were traveling to Santorini and wondered where we might be. So we followed the winds of fate to join them. The caldera view that greeted us was one of a kind. The island is shaped like an engagement ring, with a ... read more

Location: Santorini Weather: Sunny, 30°C At Santorini we arrived in the new port by tender boats, the journey in the caldera was quite rough as the wind had picked up again. The road up the side of the caldera in the bus was quite scary as you were often perched at the edge of the cliff. I visited a winery while on Santorini, the grape vines are grown on the ground in a basket shape in order to protect the grapes from the hot dry wind. The wine was very nice but 10am was a little early to be having a drink. The tour visited a great museum in Santorini that housed artefacts collected from Akrotiri. Akrotiri was covered in ash during the last massive volcanic eruption on the island. The eruption caused the island to ... read more

Location: Rhodes Weather: Sunny, 30°C Rhodes was stunning and I have decided that I must come back here again for a longer period of time. Rhodes town was a change of pace as the tour I selected focused on the medieval aspects of the city rather than the ancient. The first stop was the panoramic view from Filerimos. Rhodes was a significant stop for the Christian Knights during the crusades. The monastery at the top of Filerimos has some beautiful icons of Mary. The tour then walked through the medieval aspects of Rhodes - many of the streets and buildings are the same as they were in medieval times. The Palace of the Knights of St John was rebuilt by the Italians in the 1930/40s after it burnt down, the exterior remains unchanged from medieval times ... read more

Location: Delos and Mykonos Weather: Sunny, 26 °C Delos has to be the windiest place on earth! Our guide told us that there were only two types of hairstyle on Delos - the windy look or hat hair! We arrived in Delos by tender boats and it was a very choppy trip to the dock. By law no one is permitted to live on Delos or swim in its waters (except the security guards). The whole island is one giant archaeological site. The city itself must have been huge and was a significant religious centre and trading port for the ancient Greeks. No one died or was born on Delos, they had to travel to the neighbouring island for births and deaths. All food was grown on the other island or imported. Delos was throbbing with ... read more

August 22 - August 28 To get to Mykonos we took a slow, six hour ferry. Booking and getting to the ferry wasn't a problem, however getting a seat was. On the boat Zara and I scouted out the most comfy seats available and found a great spot next to a window. Slowly but surly the seats around us were filling up. Then suddenly people were being evicted from their seats. See, you needed a reservation. We didn't know this but found out we could reserve on the boat for a small fee. Well, when we went to do this the lady in front of us got the last two seats. By this time every other free seat was taken. So, we had to sit in the aisle for the remaining five hours. When in Europe ... read more

Greece is different! Got to Athens. which isnt the cleanest place. and alot of buildings are out of use. i dont know what i was expecting but something a little different obviously. SIgned into pagration youth hostel and met up with jess and jessie. got a bite to eat then had a siesta. When i awoke we walked into town. On this walk we saw the temple of zeus. Athens Gate then headed on over to the new acropolis museum. it was really interesting and might have reignited some of my passion for archaeology. very cool. we saw the acropolis from a distance and then bought some bread and dips 2 euro each for dinner and sat in the park. 2nd day woke up at 5am and ventured onto the streets. we had decided to catch ... read more

10:33 Our first stop on the greek side of things was Athens. We flew in from Denmark and right at the airport found a very greasy cab driver who had jumped the que to take us. We gave him our bags and realized as we were rushed and crammed into the cab that the bags were hanging out of the cab! the cab driver reassured that he would tye them down, after about 10 minutes of driving he pulls over on the narrow hiway and secures our luggage. Our cab driver was a man of many talents he not only drove a cab but he was also a indy car driver and a tour guide, which when we finally got to our stop he of course wanted to be paid for. we droped of our luggage ... read more

Hotel Reputation costs more than Human Life??? My name is Vladimir Lalov. I work as a marketing intern in a Czech company. The summer of 2009 will remain unforgettable for me - in the worst possible sense.Instead of having a deserved rest in a safe and hospitable island, I was forced to suffer nightmares and experience moments of helplessness and terror. Although some of my friends and the Greek police suggested I should try to forget everything because I was lucky and it could have been “much worse”, I do not want to forget, mainly because what happened to me may happen to other unsuspecting tourists in the future. On July 26 this year I went on vacation to the island of Mikonos, Greece. We stayed at Hotel Eva (Ornos). The owners of the 4-star hotel - ... read more
