Rachel’s first full day in Greece began with a bit of excitement. A large Greek bug decided to join her in the bathroom. Since Rachel absolutely loves American bugs, Greek bugs were extra fun. Especially since she was not wearing contacts and it moved fast and was bigger than a quarter. Luckily, Rachel escaped safely. The bug, unfortunately, didn’t. One of our favorite things to do in Europe is to walk to the local bakery every morning for a pastry and some fresh bread. Since there was no hiking involved, Rachel joined us. I thought the bakery was two blocks away. It was 100 F by 10am, so the two blocks would have been fine. However, the bakery was a bit farther and we were all sweating by the time we got there. Inside, we ... read more

We have no time to add pictures right now. We'll add them later Saturday, June 23rd - taking off The only thing that sucks about traveling is the traveling. With this in mind, we loaded up the taxi at 4:30 in the morning and headed out to the airport. Daniel was dressed to kill: khaki traveling vest and pants, Australian outback hat, and ultralight shirt. Mary and Rachel started in on making fun of it, and the previously quiet driver chimed in “I thought you were going to Australia”, much to their delight. The airport was pretty standard issue. We did see a young girl get selected for the “air puff” screening machine. She squealed with delight when the air hit her, and giggled the rest of the way through security. We got to sit ... read more

Peloponnese-home basesMary WestHey there family! Friends of ours showed us this site so we thought we'd try it out for our trip to Greece this next week. I hope this works out well. Rachel, our niece, is arriving on Friday the 22nd and we take off early on the 23rd. We will arrive in Greece Sunday, June 24th mid-morning...after 18 hours of travel. Then, Daniel will drive 3 hours to our first rental house that we are staying in for three days on the east coast of the Peloponnese. We then stay for a week on the west coast of the Peloponnese before heading to Athens July 4th-8th. We leave the 8th of July and arrive home late on that same day. Greece is 10 hours ahead of Portland. We should have e-mail and cell phone ... read more

Hey kids, The level of masturbation has just increased - with a blog... Ok - can't remember where we left of last - but Maldives were pretty insane, amazing clear warm blue water with crazy coral. Met a few dutchies on the flight out - they liked a drink, worked out well. Drank our way though a midnight flight and arrived in dubai around 5am - with a disgusting hangover... Somehow found a dingy little hotel in old Dubai and crashed out for the morning. Spent four days around Dubai. Teresa wore a skirt and t-shirt to blend in a little better with the burkas (ok there weren't that many, but around 3000% more than I've seen around Bay City Plaza), I just wore shorts and t-shirt - as it was in the high 30's each ... read more

That will pretty much some up the visit to the coast of Nafplio. It was just awe inspiring view of the city. Ok, let me back up a minute. So, we caught the bus to the coast which took 2.5 hours and was honestly for most of the trip there, wasn't too scenic. It's not till we got there had some lunch along the coast and decided to to see the fortress that sat ontop of mountain that the view overwhelmed me. It can accessed by taxi, or if you want to take the 800 + steps if you want dare try. Most of you know i would opt for the stairs but our time there was short due to the last bus leaving by 8. So, in the land that created democracy Alicia and I ... read more

Today I was like a Kid in a candy store. I got in to Nafpilo yesturday afternoon and didnt do much site seeing since i was pritty bagged form traveling and carrying my massive backpack as i staggered around the city trying to find a hotel. But i could just see those fortresses staring at me, beconing me to come and bask in the glory of their history. They were hard to miss, one was sitting in the harbour and the other was on top of a mountin and could be seen from anywhere in the city. But today I was rested and ready for the challange. After a harty breakfast and two cups of coffee I was ready to make the climbe and see the mountin fortress that sprawled across the uneven cliffs, almost ... read more

Limiting myself to 27 photos per blog is not easy so here is another short blog on Greece before we head for Morocco! Leaving Athens for Corinth Our first port of call on leaving Athens was Ancient Corinth which lies seven kilometers southwest of the modern city of Corinth. Our bus passed over the Corinth Isthmus which is a man-made canal separating the Peloponnese peninsula from mainland Greece. The Greeks used to call this the 'avlaki', meaning the ditch. Amazingly this canal was started by Nero way back in 67AD but work on it never got beyond a big trench and it wasn't until 1891-1893 that the canal became a reality. It is an amazing sight; like a mini Suez Canal! Corinth was one of ancient Greece's wealthiest and most promiscuous cities but he only ancient ... read more

today i thought of so many clever ways to begin this entry as i walked around Methoni.... of course they all now evade me. i am sitting in a funny little loft of a cafe/bar in the corner at one of three computer terminals.... young kids smoke and joke and flirt on the other side..... i am going to try to simultaneously blog the present as well as my past 3 weeks in Greece. (different entries though, so i hope, you can make sense of it) Methoni is a smallish town on the westernmost peninsula of South Greece. Waking up this morning i first took a walk around to buy some groceries for breakfast. The Greeks dont really do breakfast and as i had slept in today, i knew this was my best bet. the ... read more

The first trip we took once i was back on my feet was to Nafplio, a port town in the Peloponese about 2.5 hrs out of Athens. It was said to be charming and contain an important fortress. With lots of Venetian architecture, touristy shops, a great walkway by the water, and many places to eat, it was a good place to visit with my family. By myself i think i may have found it a bit too tailored and clean. But we did lot of walking, looking and family posing for pictures shots...... which i havent posted, i like my off the cuff silouette shot best........ The fortress was very cool and as it was the first i visited, i was very impressed (now, having seen several, they're all like "oh ok another fortress"). ... read more

Once you get past the idea that Greece is always warm and sunny, winter travel in the Pelponese is great==no crowds, local folks just going about their business of farming, fishing, goatherding. Olives, oranges and lemons are ripe literally for the picking, and early spring flowers are out. Opening hours are short, with many places closing at 3pm for the day. We met very few tour groups, almost all European student study tours with one high school group rather improbably from Buffalo NY. Many coastal places are shut for the season. Old Epidaraus grows from a winter population of 2000 to 5 times that in summer. I was stunned by ancient Mycenea, a major civilization in the 13th-15th century BC. We had seen some of its most amazing finds in Athens, including exquisite pottery and gold ... read more
