Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Great Signs
Great Signs
This part of Crete was the first place we saw both Greek and English on the same sign...usually the first sign was Greek followed by an English sign about 150 metres further along.
Day 20 Samaria Gorge Both of us bright and early this morning. We were more or less sure of our route to the Gorge, left at 7 am and arrived at 2 hours later. I was a little nervous about this drive! You know how when you are driving and you have a close call with danger and that little moment kind of stays in your mind, and you have flashbacks? Well…when I was driving us to Paleohora on Sat we were on I think the wildest roads yet, with construction thrown in to boot. We were just leaving this little [View Full Entry]

Greetings, We continue on here in Paleohora, and are really loving it here. Rented scooters yesterday and were out and about on the wld roads until the wind nearly blew us over when we rounded one curve so we made our way home. Heard this morning when I was out walking that the ferry is cancelled today due to high winds so we will return our scoots and explore a few more roads in the car. I am on a poor internet connection so will use pics to tell you about our last few days, and I do mean our LAST [View Full Entry]

Just wating for Gord to have his breakfast. The last 2 places I have been able to find sheep milk yogurt which is really good. I am in the internet cafe right beside the hotel...this may be the last blog I post as this place closes after today. Looking into scooter and bicycle rentals today...there is a path along the coast I want to bike on. Fun With The Family Europe » Greece » Crete » Paleohora
Onita’s brother, Prem, and family arrived the day after us, which was great. They were coming for a week. Two days after that, Karl’s brother Jon and family arrived, also for a week. It was lovely to have the families there and Asha and Jay really enjoyed having both big cousins and little cousins to play with. Having so many meant that dinner was a fun occasion with the 13 of us! [View Full Entry]

Knowing the place as we do, it took us no time at all to settle in. Karl unpacked the car while Onita packed things in cupboards, drawers and wardrobes. The kids jumped out of their clothes and into their swimming costumes, eager to do some swimming. Once the car was unpacked, Karl took them swimming, which was bliss. [View Full Entry]

It made perfect sense, from any angle. Renting a car, that is. Yesterday's adventure to and from Samaria Gorge had collectively cost us €32 in transportation alone. And that was just about the daily rental price. Plus, it would be impossible to do Crete justice by public transportation because of its size and topography And so, into our lives came IEK-2400 - a fiesty little silver Opel Corsa. And, right then and there, our Crete experience morphed into a totally unique and unexpected affair. Besides holding the record for smoking the most cigarettes of any EU country, Gr [View Full Entry]

Athens

The Acropolis and Zeus
Over the last 9 months we have learned that you really can’t plan more than a couple of days ahead. We left the continent of Africa after an absolutely amazing time. Our tentative plan was to start in Greece and make our way up through Eastern Europe, visiting some friends along the way. We made it to Greece and settled in easily to the beach lifestyle on Crete. We spent 3 weeks hanging out in tiny beach towns and mountain villages. This is where the unexpected came. Along the way we always thought there could be problems, unexpected events, budgets blown [View Full Entry]
