Tim and Carol Maycock

We took a month long trip to Greece from 3rd June 2013 to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary, starting in Athens and flying home from Crete. This blog is about our experiences.

Saturday Today we have decided to make the 3.5 hour drive to Kastelli near Heraklion so that we are near the airport for the flight home. The drive over the mountains from Paleochora to Chania is spectacular (TIM LIKES THE WORD SPECTACULAR.) and we add time to the journey by stopping frequently for photographs. Traffic on this road is very light and so on one of these stops I decide to answer a call of nature at the side of the road. I suppose it was inevitable, but at that moment a coach followed by several assorted cars and trucks came around the corner. Cue much honking of horns. It was such a good opportunity that Carol also took a photo despite us having an unwritten rule on this. I have, I'm afraid, vetoed it from ... read more

Friday The alarm goes off at 5.15am. I thought this was supposed to be a holiday! But today is the day of the Samaria Gorge walk and we have to catch the bus from Paleochora bus station at 6.15am. The previous evening we had reconnoitered (RECKIED) the route so we did not waste time in the morning. We set off at 5.55am;(6AM) 20 minutes for a 5 minute walk. We immediately go wrong but can easily retrace our rote.(HA, HA IT WAS MAKING US LATE! AND NO TIME TO SPARE) Carol insists we practically run to the bus station though and we arrive at 6.05am. (A GENTLE TROTT WAS ALL IT REQUIRED AND TIM WASN'T PREPARED TO DO THAT WE GOT THERE AT 6.15AM WHEN THE BUS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE.) The bus station is a ... read more

TUESDAY I HAVE MANAGED TO WRESTLE THE COMPUTER OFF TIM SO I'M DOING THE BLOG TODAY. ITS A BIT OF A BITTY DAY TODAY AS WE HAVE TO BE OUT OF OUR ROOMS AND THE CAR RETURNED TO THE HIRE PLACE BY NOON AND OUR FERRY DOESN'T GO UNTIL 5.55PM SO A BIT OF TIME TO FILL. WE SPEND THE MORNING PACKING AND BEING LAZY AROUND THE POOL. I START MY FINAL BOOK BUT IT ISN'T AS GOOD AS THE REST. IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER AS WE WON'T GET AS MUCH TIME FOR READING THESE LAST FEW DAYS BECAUSE THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF TRAVELLING TO DO AND WALKING. THE HIRED CAR IS RETURNED WITHOUT A SCRATCH SO WELL DONE TIMOTHY! A bit of a miracle on Santorini I think.WE BLAG A LIFT UP TO ... read more

Sunday We wake at 7am to go and catch our ferry to Santorini. I say wake, what with the fireworks, bouzouki etc there was not a lot of sleeping. We feel like we have just done a night shift. We quietly open the door thinking we will be the only people in the village awake. We find Anna and her daughter Maria waiting for us to get up to see us off. Perhaps they never went to bed. Maria gives us a handmade souvenir of Milos and it was all hugs and kisses all around. It must have been the dancing. (PERHAPS THEY WERE GLAD TO SEE THE BACK OF US.) They asked us to tell all our friends,so if you ever find yourselves in Milos and are looking for a simple but fully equipped room ... read more

THURSDAY IT IS AN EXPLORING DAY TODAY I DON'T THINK MY HAT WILL GET MUCH OF AN OUTING AS IT IS SO WINDY IT WONT STAY ON MY HEAD. TIM WONT BE PARTED WITH HIS THOUGH HOWEVER NERDY HE LOOKS WITH HIS CHIN STRAP ON. Tourist chic I call it. WE HEAD FOR PAPAFRAGIOS TO SEE ONE OF THE WONDERS OF MILOS WHICH IS A CANAL CUT INTO THE ROCK BY THE SEA, AND THEN IT IS ON TO FLAKOPI THE SITE OF THE ANCIENT CAPITAL OF MILOS A BRONZE AGE CITY. WE DISCOVER THAT THEY ARE LITERALLY NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER. WE GO AND VIEW THE SEA CANAL FIRST. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS EXPECTING BUT IT WAS A BIG NARROW HOLE OR SPLIT IN THE ROCK WITH HUGE WAVES OF WATER LASHING UP ... read more

As we are spending 6 days on Milos we have decided to split this part of the trip into 2 blogs. Monday Speedrunner3 is on time and makes the normal F1 style pit stop to unload and load. The ferry is almost empty. We have a big section of comfortable airline style seats to ourselves for the hour long journey. First impressions of Adamas, Milos' port are good with a neat and tidy waterfront lined with shops and tavernas. Our accommodation, the Milos Rooms are supposed to be 250 meters away. The sat nav begs to differ and calls it just under half a mile. It's an easy walk though but already very hot. On arrival we are shown to our room. When we point out there is no balcony we are shown a table and ... read more

WE ARE LOOSING TRACK OF THE DAYS NOW I THINK ITS TUESDAY. TIM IS DISPATCHED TO GO AND FIND BREAKFAST WHILST I SLOWLY WAKE UP. AT HOME IT IS USUALLY THE OTHER WAY ROUND BUT AFTER LAST NIGHTS TREK HE HAS A PENANCE TO PAY. Nothing unusual there then. I AM BOILING THE SMALLEST SAUCEPAN FULL OF WATER FOR OUR COFFEES IT TAKES 2 SAUCEPANS FULL TO MAKE 2 MUGS. OUR FIRST TASK TODAY IS TO TRY AND WORK OUT THE GREEK FERRY SYSTEM. WE WANT TO STAY ON SERIFOS UNTIL THURSDAY AND THEN SET SAIL TO SIFNOS. NO SUCH LUCK NO FERRIES ON THURSDAY SO WE SHALL STAY AN EXTRA NIGHT AND GO ON FRIDAY. Europe » Greece » Attica » Piraeus June 12th 2013

The hire car has clearly had enough of us and on the steep climb out of Porto Germeno it refused to get out of second gear. This, along with the fact that I seemed to have accidentally ticked the "use narrow potholed roads where often bits are missing" button on the sat nav made for an interesting first half hour. The roads were pretty much deserted until suddenly, just a few miles from Athens the traffic built to terrifying proportions again. We managed to return our hire car (why do these things take so long?) Piraeus was as chaotic as last Thursday. We had about 4 hours before our ferry sailed and so killed time in the shelters on the port. These are used by vagrants to sleep, drink, shout and fall over. What with this ... read more

Breakfast was included in the price at the Hotel Iradanos and we took it at the pavement cafe in front of the hotel on a beautifully sunny and relaxed Greek Sunday morning overlooking the waterfront. It was a coffee shop and being from a generation where a cup of coffee is a cup of coffee there was a confusing few minutes where the waitress explained all the different types of coffee they have and we kept saying, "yes but we just want a cup of coffee please." In the end I think we ended up with very milky coffee but it was very good. We decided that our last day on the mainland should be a lazy one and we headed for a point on the map about half way back to Athens where a beach ... read more
