After the many bus rides on this trip, we have learnt a strategy for obtaining the best seats with the result of ultimate comfort and sleep (by far the best are the ones in the back of the bus, upper level if possible. These seats are not only comprised of two seats on either side of the bus, but instead, have an additional seat in the middle making up a couch if you will.) Unfortunately, one detail was forgotten when boarding the bus in Trikala: the effects of a large coffee (or we should say a hot cup of ‘Nes’ on a rainy day). Approximately, 3 hrs into the 6 hr bus ride, Ewa needed to use the ‘little girl’s room.’ Generally long distance buses are equipped with washroom facilities, however, when Jill went to investigate ... read more

Thursday, 11th September 2008 - Kozani I had my cloths washed in a washing shop for the local students and asked people for a cheap hostel to stay. A beautiful girl (there are so many of them in this town) recommended a hotel near the center: Anesis Hotel. They charged me 25 Euro for the cheapest room they had with a shared bathroom. In the evening I made contact to a local shop owner on the central square of Kozani, which is a great place to relax, talk and watch the passing people. His name is Baschos, he worked in Germany before, so we could talk in German. His family and friends and their family also passed by and we talked very nice till 1 AM in the night. Best experience was when Alikmini, the 62 ... read more

R&R Greece We thought we would add these few phots from our other camera. We are both enjoying the rest but looking forward to getting back on the bikes again. We have to slow down a bit now or we will arrive to early in Instanbul. Because f the monsoon season we can't arrive in India before mid October at the earliest. The plan now is to stay in Kavala until Thursday then go to one of the small islands off the coast for the weekend before returning to Kavala. We will then head off slowly along the coast to the Turkish border. Where we go from there we will decide when our guide books turn up from the UK (thanks Royd).... read more

Well we have finally made it to the Med. Along the way we have had blood with the little tumbles on the bikes, sweat as we battled with the hill of Bulgaria and finally tears of emotion as we saw the Med for the first time. We both can't believe we have come so far. A lot has happened since our last entry. As Dave kindly put it in one of his comments I've lost more of my winter body and there is defenately more room in the tent. We were glad to leave Hungary. Three things happened on our last day that was the final straw. First after I left the internet cafe I decided to get a hair cut. The hairdresser didn't speak English so I indicated I just wanted a trim. She nodded ... read more

Howdy Folks Today is our last day in Greece so thought we should give you the low down on what we have been up to. We had a great ferry crossing from Ancona, Italy to Patras, Greece. The seas were really calm (nothing like the Cook Strait) and we sat in the afternoon sun drinking beer, writing postcards and playing cards. Very relaxing and a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Roma. Had a bit of a mission trying to find some accommodation for the night in Patras and found that door knocking works really well (i.e. you dont always need to book in advance on the Internet)! Walking through the streets we saw a gang of youths being chased by the cops. It was rather weird as the youths appeared to be enjoying ... read more

After another long ferry ride we were back in Athens. Ready to organise a Visa for Turkey. We were pretty sure we could get it at the border, but the info we found on the net was a bit misleading so we decided it was best to just get it then and there in Athens. We locked up our bags at the main train station and headed for the city. Unfortunately both of us had forgot to bring passport photos so we had to look for a place to get some, which proved difficult. While the photos were being developed we had some breakfast..... "Hmmmmm the only thing around is Maccas'". We gave it a shot and ordered what we thought to be a simple order. Sausage and egg Mc Muffin and a Sausage McMuffin, with ... read more
