Can you believe it a traffic jam at midnight, Sunday with a temperature of 30 degrees. Not sure of this weeks plans yet, but making good use of every moment of my time away. Now I will back track to some of the activities of the last two weeks, which were quite something. I trust you will enjoy the pictures. We have seen some of them on the TV and they look pretty good and made us laugh again and again. I will only send a few, of course, but Nick and Arlene were laughing that I was a photographer taking pictures ... read more

It was officially 45 degrees Celsius and much more in the city. While walking the sites, I drank 9 litres of water during the 4 hours it took me to walk around. I bet it was over 50 C on top of the Acropolis.... read more

Well, when we made it to Rome it was a lot like the first camp site we stayed at. It was really good times. During our stay we made it to the Vatican City (which wasn't all that exciting). In the Museum I actually found a 13th century picture of a guy giving the shoker... I will add it when Im done wrtting all of this. I thought it was great... but some didnt see it as funny as I did. Fuck them if they can't take a joke. Anyways, so when we got to the Vatican there was a MASSIVE QUE. It went around like five of the walls of the city... but we knew we had to wait it. After that we checked out St. Peters Cathedral. We didnt go inside because it ... read more

After a short stay in Venice (which we found pretty but too small for the number of tourists crammed in the narrow streets) we hoped a ferry to Greece. And for 30 hours is went by rather fine, we met some nice people, played cards, read books, and just camped out. but now we are in Athens.... It is very strange to be back here without the people I associate with this place, but it is noce to be in a familiar area. It feels like no time has lapsed since I was studying here, and my feet still know the ways around the streets. I found my old apartment, but the school no longer owns it, and where Miles and the boys lived is now a pharmacy. Our hostel is in Pangrati, a very nice ... read more

Today Dad and I (Julia) went to the Acropolis in Athens. Erica, unfortunately, was sick during the night so she and mom stayed behind at the boat. Dad and I took a shuttle bus from the boat to a drop off point, then walked about 25 minutes to the metro. It was hot. On the metro Dad looked out the window and said, “Wow, look at that.” I glanced casually out the window and only saw a junkyard filled with garbage. “What?” I asked. Dad replied. “Slums.” I looked harder, and before the junkyard ended I caught glimpses of tents and makeshift houses. I silently kicked myself for not looking close enough to see the people living in poverty, but just seeing the garbage and the dirt that they call home. On the ride back ... read more

The past week has been an eventful one to say the least, and has taken me through the heart of Tuscany, the splendor of Rome, the shores of Italy and into the cradle of Democracy. Siena When I arrived in Siena, all I had was an incorrect phone number and the promise of a section of tile floor to sleep on. After bumbling around at the train station payphone for 15 minutes, I hopped onto a bus, managed to check my e-mail and found my old college teammate Brett. Siena is a small almost medievel looking town tucked away in the hills of Tuscany. Sixteenth century buildings line the cobblestone streets, entwined with pizzerias, gelato shops and bars. But Siena's quaint beauty, unspoiled demeanor and lavish Duomo aren't it's true claim to fame. Il Palio, ... read more

So the day I was about to leave Thebes, I finally got in touch with Dr. Aleydis Vander Moortel. She is the director of the excavation at Mitrou, an island near the small beachfront village of Tragana in northern Boeotia. The site has been producing an enormous amount of pottery and other remains from the Bronze and Geometric ages, as well as finding numerous buildings, cysts graves etc. At this point none of the chronology is absolutely fixed, but the excavation is still only in it’s late Bronze age levels in most areas. Getting to the island was an experience in and of itself. I took the bus to Lamia from the Liosion KTEL station in Athens (after much searching to find the station) and asked the driver to put me off in Tragana. After ... read more

Very early in the morning I had to leave Zois place (she left for a vacation) and went to Anastasia, my second host. I met her in her appartment (got there by a taxi which of course Zoi got for me, otherwise...see previous entries), was welcomed and just dropped my backpack. Today was MY day. I was going to see the Akropolis and all the other famous ancient buildings and museums...NOT. Lets tell a story. So in the morning I got out, stretched my body and went into the bathroom. Long had I planned this - it was my day. Every detail lay in front of me. I knew my mission might not be easy but really: this was part of the cruel game...The most basic thing was to hide and how to hide better than ... read more

Hey guys, sorry that I haven't had the chance to update the blog. Internet on the islands is very expensive. Hopefully, I can also work out how to put some photos up from our travels. We are back in Piraeus and this of course means back in my favourite CHEAP internet cafe so I can finally update you on our adventures. Before I forget, I have a Greek number over here. Its +306939913121 so make sure you message us :p Salamina Since I last left off we have visited some of Ange's relatives on the small island of Salamina. This island is only 30mins from Piraeus and is visted by many Greeks because of its beaches. We had lunch with Ange's Uncle Babis, Aunty Elvira and cousin George and although they spoke minimal English it ... read more
