We are having a great time in Germany! We went to a beerhall in Munich with huge 1 litre steins, we had about 3 each, the beer is so much better than at home, it's organic and has no preservatives. We had lots of sausage. We were in Lucerne for a few days, it is a beautiful city. We could live there, lots of clocks that go off on the hour. They lost the soccer match, but they were still very happy and celebrating. Now we are in the Rhine Valley, lots of castles and vinyards. We're off to a wine tasting!... read more

Dienstag (oder fruh Mittwoch), 3.6.2008 (Tuesday, or early Wednesday, June 3rd, 2008) So at the end of my last entry, I said I was starting to hallucinate because I was so tired. After I got off the internet, I decided to go outside and get some fresh air for a few minutes before bed. A lot of people from the hostel were drinking outside, and two people came up to me and started talking to me - a girl originally from Melbourne, Australia who now lives in Dublin, Ireland, and a guy originally from Pretoria, South Africa who now also lives in Dublin. We made some small-talk, like where we’re from, why we’re in Berlin, blah blah. Then they asked me to come play pool with them, and even though I was beyond exhausted, I thought ... read more

I'm in Germany! I'm trying to type this with a weird German keyboard, so bear with me :) We got on the ferry to Calais, spent 3 hours wandering around with an Austrian girl called Katrin trying to find somewhere cheap to sleep that was still open, ended up giving back and going to first hotel. Next day got on train, Calais to Amiens, Amiens to Paris Nord. We had to navigate the Metro (French tube) and get on a local train to Monet Veneux des Sablons, which was where our campsite was. We slept there, then went to the Louvre the next day (it is huge, you could spend days there, we only went into one building) and looked at artifacts from ancient Greece and of course Italian paintings. We saw the Mona Lisa (overrated ... read more

Guten Tag everyone from East Berlin where I am staying for the next 3 days. I arrived this afternoon from Budapest. Turns out there was an accident on the railway so I had to take a cab instead... so it goes... I made it on time. Met a couple from Washington State and we shared stories of our travels to pass the time. They were very helpful in helping me to navigate the rail system from Schoenfeld to where my hostel is. Once I arrived, I met one of the other people in my room who happens to be from Waterloo in Canada and so he invited me to join him for lunch. We had currywurst which seems to be a local favourite of bratwurst with curry on top. Wanting to get to exploring right away ... read more

Dave just got offered an assignment at Spangdahlem Germany for the summer of '09! I think we are going to take it after much talk. We are going to miss being near our families but we think this is the best decision for us. When else do you get a chance to live in Europe? I hope Kensie can learn some German while we are over there....I hope I can too! I thought I would start a "blog" website for everyone back home to keep up to date on our adventures in Germany. I'm sure it's going to be interesting living in a country that doesn't speak English. I'll try to update this as often as I can and add pictures too! Hope you enjoy it.... read more

Lana refers to these as "cheater" entries - I guess it's about time I did one. I blame HI Brussels for charging me 1,5€ for an hour of internet. It's the first place (and thus far only) that has charged me for wireless. As much as I adore updating everyone, that hour was needed for more important things (like figuring out how to get out of Brussels). But on to the update! Thursday cont. - Made it to Brussels in one piece after a WONDERFUL train ride. The comfort of the train made up for all of the garbage I had to deal with at the train station. For the first time I did what my rail pass is supposed to allow me to do - I got on the train I wanted and just sat ... read more

... read more

Not a bad town, copped a lot less damage than other towns in WW2. Went out to Walhalla as well, and had dinner at a beer garden with a local couch surfer and some of his friends watching Germany in the soccer. Didnt care about the soccer but the food and beer were good... read more

Tag 4: Büsum - Husum, 113,68 km, Fahrzeit 6:38, Durchschn. 17,10 km/h, Gesamtstrecke: 499 km Heute mal etwas früher aufgestanden.

6/7/08 Today we had lectures from people who grew up in Soviet Czechoslovakia and East Germany. It was interesting to hear about their lives, and what was going on as they were growing up. First, we heard from Dasa our tour guide who grew up in a small village. Her family worked on a collective farm. She spent most of her time outdoors. Her family had a garden where nearly all their food came from, and they had rabbits and chickens that they raised and killed for food as well. Her father wanted her to learn how to kill the rabbits but she was not a big fan of that. Because her village only had about 300 people in it, there were only 5 people in her grade so she had to take classes with another ... read more
