GREAT NEWS!! We found a house! It is a little modern for our taste, but will work great for us. It is 20-25 mins. from RAB. Its an Autobahn commute, but that is ok. We think that the inside will work great for our needs for the next 3 years. We met the owners/landlords and they seem like great people. The wife fell in love with Joshua. Thank you big blue eyes, you got us a house. :) I knew they would come in handy someday. (Don't mind later in life those same looks might get him in trouble. We will worry about that later.) Anyway, the house is big, but not to big that I will have a hard time keeping it clean. We do have to invest in some more furniture. Good news for ... read more

Hello all, We are all doing great here in Germany. Apparently better than Virginia and Maryland, with all their crazy snow! Shovels are your best friends at the moment. Can't lie, kind of glad we got out before that. But, my heart is with you all. UPDATE: K and I are legal drivers in Germany. K passed his driving test last week and I just passed mine today. Wow was it hard. There was only 100 questions, but you can only miss 15 and pass. Let me just tell you a little bit about German driving. I am not lying when I say there are 160 different signs! That all mean different things. That is a lot of memorizing. But with a lot of hours of studying we are done! Woohoo. Thank goodness. Joshua is walking ... read more

Hallo, (German for Hello!) See I am learning :) We went on our first outing today. While we were on the way to look at a house, we stopped to take some pictures on Main street. This is Otterberg. I must say I think we fit into our surroundings. Why don't we just hold a sign up saying " Hi! We are tourist, so anything old we are going to take a picture in front of..cheese!" It is really pretty. We are adjusting well. Still on the house hunt, but I am sure we will find something. Tomorrow we are going to explore, so more fun pictures! Tschuss! (Means Bye! I am on a roll)... read more

Day 26: Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 Prague, Czech Republic to St. Goar, Germany So, yeah, remember that cold medicine? Well, as my dear brother John pointed out, in Scotland, the cold medicine has codeine in it. Say goodnight Gracie! I'm guessing the Austrian version has something similar because I was in the most ridiculous haze. It was bad enough that while standing outside the coach, waiting to hand off my bag to Enzo, Jonathan (who later quasi joined our group) offered to hold my bag for me and load it if I wanted to just go and sit down on the bus. I think I nodded my head and thanked him before sludging away, but I can't really remember. That entire trip to St. Goar is a blur. I remember sitting dazed at a rest stop, ... read more

Dear Friends and Readers: I have started and not finished several editions of this travel blog in the past few months. It is my hope to resume writing about my beloved Switzerland in the near future. With the Christmas season once again upon us, I have had a lot of time for reflection on the past. I want to bring you a taste of an experience I had a couple of Christmas' ago. In Germany Christmas festivities are celebrated during the whole of Advent which takes place through most of the month of December. Each city celebrates "Adventzeit or Weihnachtsziet" in their own way. Many have a little market, ( Christkindlmarkt or Christ child market), composed of stalls that are built in the main public area, often in the courthouse square or the Cathedral square. Each ... read more

This is a city visited by millions every year. The 4th largest city in Germany. I travelled from Brussels 5 Dec 09 using Thalys train arriving in Koln about 10.55am. Try to book early if not it will cost you much more. I was charged 44euro one way. The Koln Hbf is HUGE. And the toilet EXPENSIVE! 1 euro per entry. McClean on the toilet label - Hmm since when MacDonald venture into cleaning business? Anyway I paid to see and well its nothing exciting. Next time use the toilet at Romano-Germanisch museum. Its free! First stop - Koln Tourisme. Got my maps and bought the Welcome Card. Its a mistake to buy the card even though it cost only 9euro. I realised that we can travel the best part of Cologne all with your reliable ... read more

Anyone remember "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy?" Well...this is the first installment of "Random Thoughts by Brenna Child." Not nearly as funny or interesting, but things we feel the need to share nonetheless: 1) We are the proud owner’s of a German drivers license. Jeremy and I both took the test Oct 15th and passed! This says a lot, since many people fail it the first go ‘round. Autobahn, here we come. 2) We signed the lease on our new house and have officially moved in! We are all very happy, including Lady P who is enjoying the heated tiles. We are also happy to report that all our belongings (clothes and furniture) have been delivered. (not all intact, but we have them!) 3) (Warning: only interesting to me) I can get my Netflix through our ... read more

As we walk down the street, there are people everywhere setting up chairs, benches and even a couch, on the curb. The farther we walked, the more people were making themselves at home on the curb. Why was I getting the sinking suspicion that we were in the middle of a parade route? Because we were. Fortunately for us (and the onlookers), it hadn’t started yet. In their annual wine festival, Neustadt, Germany has a parade of 150 floats in a 2-hour parade. These elaborate, yet organic looking floats, are pulled by old tractors, horses, or the occasional donkey, as they are paraded through the cobble stone streets. Most of the floats represent a particular vineyard in Rhineland-Palatinate. Helping to promote their wine, was a wine princess, waving to the crowd and offering autographs to the ... read more

The second trip to Germany for work was also to Ramstein, Germany. This time, there were about 9 coworkers assigned to the same location with me. As it turned out, there were about 6 people that were fun to be around/travel with/drink with, as well as three different coworkers I already knew that were nearby in Heidelberg, Germany. This trip was by far the best time I've ever had on a trip. All of the coworkers ate every meal together, traveled together, and drank together. While I was from the DC area, another coworker from Boston was the only person my age. As it turned out, within two weeks we were basically dating. Bill and I traveled every single weekend together and are still together today. All but one of the trips within this time period ... read more
