After a long flight from San Francisco through Dallas we will land at Frankfurt on Main shortly after dawn. The plan is to stay up until 10 or 11 p.m. local time and then sleep like the dead until the next morning. We hope to catapult ourselves into the Central European time zone this way. I'll let you know if it works. While we are keeping ourselves awake we will either be seeing the sights of Frankfurt or hop a train and shoot over to Koln for a quick visit. In any event we will head back to Frankfurt at dinner time before we collapse from lack of sleep.... read more

Today we leave beautiful, sunny Oakland, California, for our long flight from San Francisco International to Frankfurt, Germany. A little about us: We live in a mid-rise condominium building called The Sierra at Jack London Square. I work for the Oakland Police Department doing crime statistics, my partner - who does not want me to use his name - works for a large health care provider. We have made several trips together in the United States and one to Mexico, but this is our first time to go to Europe together. Here are a couple of photos of our life in Oakland:... read more

Ok ok, I know Frankfurt is not really a trip cause I was LIVING there, but since I'm not from Germany... it sorta was part of a trip... a really long one! ;) Anyways.. I was gonna say that it was sooo worth mentioning, but it's not anymore.. I should've written as soon as I went back home, now it's just funny for who was there.. but whatever.. I'll write anyway! =p So...the girls and I went to Frankfurt on Saturday night and spent an hour only at the hbf (I say this a lot...for those of you who don't know: hbf = main train station) cause we were starving and Ginnie and I found this place that sells sushi.. my obsession.. and it was kinda expensive, but soooooooo good!!!! Hey!!!!! I'm near Frankfurt rigtht now, we have a beautiful view!!!!!! The other Americans are really nice, but I don't know why I feel....mmmm....kind of weird ......yesterday I got a little bit drepress , but I'm not home-sick yet..I don't know, it was a weird feeling...all I wanted to do was listen to music in Spanish and look at the beautiful montains from the school's balcony. I'm actually having a really good time, I really don't know why I got like that. Well, anyway, moving on...we are living in small apartments which are right next the school like 'side by side'. There's 6 people per apartment, plus our teamer, who takes care of us, so that we don't burn the house!!!And there's 2 people püer room. My roommate is from ....ups...I forgot...I think she's from D.C ... read more

07.23.06 I was trying to sleep in this morning, as Park doesn’t get done in the days until 1:30, and someone is hammering, apparently, on something that just will not get into the wall. Wow. My room has not been cleaned since I’ve been here, but this place is definitely better than the last one. I got an email from the hotel I left saying that I had to pay for 3 days for canceling. However, I re-read all of our communication and translated every page of their web site, and no where is there listed any sort of policy of any kind regarding cancellation. I wrote back saying that I would not pay, as I already offered and paid for the first night, which I didn’t even spend at the hotel. Do they think we ... read more

So for once we'ver slowed our trip down a little bit. The lazy train ride to Frankfort gave us pleny of time to relax and write another 10 pages in our journals. Then last night we went to Mainz's (a city outside Frankfort) "old town" for a nice dinner at a German place. Then we booked our train reservations to/from Paris and our hostel there as well. We don't really know where the hostel is but have a hand scribbled map that I'm sure will get us there no problem ... nooo problem. I sit now in a 100 degree internet cafe sipping a delicious Paulaner Hefe-weizen. It's 9:15 Thursday evening and we've been just killing time walking around the city and napping by the river since 4. It's the first time I really felt like ... read more

When I rest, I rust. - A German Proverb. If I haven't come home in August and you can't find me in Venice, its because I'm wandering through Germany. We weren't planning on going to Germany originally, but we were so glad that we did. It was the last 3 days of the World Cup and even though there were no games in Frankfurt while we were there, the WC fever definitely was. I even got to practice my German. I'm very rusty, but I could understand enough. Basically everyone spoke English anyway. We got into Frankfurt pretty late on Thursday, got some food and went to bed. Friday we did a boat tour down the Rhein River. We had to ride on a bus for about an hour and got to see a lot of ... read more

The germany trains are a vast improvement over the Czech. Fast, clean and quiet. We got to Franfurt about 8 pm and once we figured out the subway system and how to buy tickets got to the hotel with no problems even though the city is big. It amazing how excited we get about a hotel room with towels, a tv that works and an elevator. We´re also not on the top floor tonight, which doesn´t make any difference if there is a lift, but we always seem to get the room on the top floor when there isn´t!! I went exploring...as usual E is a stick-in-the-mud and is "exhausted" and just wants to stay in the room. I´m only going to be here once, & I´m not missing out on anything. Won´t really get to ... read more
