Wednesday 1st October Germany We started out day with breakfast in the motor home while tour buses pulled up with loads of tourist. Those poor people were having breakfast standing up in the cold battling the wind and trying to eat all the same. We tried really hard not to look smug while we had our warm coffee and toast inside!!!! We were driving to a place called Oberstdorf from where we hoped to catch public transport to Schloss Neuschwanstein , the fairy tale castle used by Walt Disney. The country side was spectacular and the drive to the caravan park was one of the best parts of the day. The remainder of the day was lazy and once we got settle into the park, we walked 2km to the closest little town Salzberg. It was ... read more
The weather was still great and with a little information from the Internet I took the chance to visit the mountain Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf. The cable car is opened only until Nov. 2nd, thats why I decided to make the trip today. The Nebelhorn (2.224 m) is the highest mountain in the Allgäu Alps in Germany, near to the village of Oberstdorf. It lends its name to the Nebelhorn Trophy figure skating competition. I started from Ottobeuren to Oberstdorf via A7 and A980 and later on via B19, alltogether the route is approxm. 73km long - BUT - if you ever consider to go there too: be aware! The traffic is bad, verrry bad. It took me almost 3 hours to reach Oberstdorf... and there was stop and go traffic all the way. To Oberstdorf - ... read more

Published: December 23rd 2007Europe » Germany » Bavaria » OberstdorfSo today, (or last weekend, whichever way you want to look at it) Warren dragged me off in search of snow! With word from the Algau that snow had finally started to fall, all the ski passes seemed to be open, so Warren and I headed down to the Fellhorn, possibly the southern-most ski field in Germany, very near the town of Oberstdorf (the town that we visited last year with the giant ski jump...). We left a wet Ulm and after driving for around 40 minutes we started to see little bits of snow here and there... Oh and we saw the wierdest thing ever! This family in a campervan, dragging a smart car on a trailer... taking their freaking smart car on holiday with them!! Why don't they just take the car and spring ... read more
Oberstdorf, Bavaria, Germany Melissa and I stayed at a Gästhaus about 3 towns up the mountainside, the “Berg Vagabund.” A very nice lady and her husband basically ran a hotel out of their oversized chalet, and they did not speak a word of English (their daughter, who was about 18 helped us out when the language barrier was impassable). Skiing on the Nebelhorn for 2 days was more than enough to wear us out, but I think it was the best skiing-snow I ever remember. *Ever.* …Not to rub your nose in it or anything, of course. Hey, if it's any consolation, we got so damn tired skiing everyday that we really just sat in the hotel room in the evening, resting our bones. Oh, my. Life *is* rough... ... read more
