My other-half booked a “Trichlore” trip. The aim was to visit three countries over the course of one short weekend. Based in Nice, we would have excursions along the coast using the excellent rail network. We would visit Eze in France, Monte Carlo in Monaco and Ventimillia in Italy. It was a trip of surprising contrasts and where equally striking comparisons were to be made. After spending the previous day exploring Nice, we set out towards the station primed after a leisurely breakfast; a veritable carbohydrate-fest of bread and croissant from a local cafe. It’s a short hop from Nice to the railway station at Eze sur Mer. The picturesque village of Eze lies upwards from the station around 2 kilometers away. A little plaque on the north exit of the railway station points the way. ... read more

Today I had a lay in, but did have on the agenda to go to a little village called Éze. It was about 9 km from Nice and 5 km before you go to Monaco, which I caught a tram, and then a bus to get to the little village. It took about half an hour, as the bus drove up through the mountains to get to the Village which is more then 450 metres above sea level. As soon as I arrived of course a nice cup of coffee and to the office of tourism to get a little map. Onward and up hill into the village where there were private residences, and lots of little shops. The roads (well walkways) were no more than 2 metres wide, and some of the shop doors were ... read more

Another fantastic day out. For fathers day, David could not have asked for a better day. Angie had day off, she hired a wee car and drove us down the coast to Eze. What a beautiful place perched high on the cliffs overlooking the mediterranean sea. We had a lovely lunch at this restaurant on a beautiful cove, no road access, you had to walk down 112 steps. Amazing views. Then on the way home, we went to visit the artist Renoir's villa between Nice and Antibes. 10 out of 10 day.... read more

Central Spain at the height of summer is fierce, blinding, whitewashed and arid. Traversing the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a massive natural boundary between Spain into Southern France, we descended into a treasure trove of colour, seeded by picturesque little towns. Towns which would effortlessly grace the covers of travel magazines, towns whose beauty was elementary to comprehend, towns we’d previously never heard of. The first destination of note that day which I can remember by name was Carcassonne. As we rolled up late-afternoon to Camping de la Cité it was already over-capacity, so they stuck us out in an overflow field. A blessing, as it turns out, since we could spy the famous medieval castle of Carcassonne, with its two-and-half-thousand year history, from our tent flap. After setting up camp we were able to walk ... read more

So a quick story first. While walking thru Place de Massena, I hear police sirens coming up behind me. First a police officer on a motorcycle. Then another behind him, go whizzing by. Then a police car speeds past, and just when you think the police parade is over, a van drives by, the sliding door open and there sits a police officer, facing outside, hard look on his face, bullet proof vest and an automatic rifle gripped in his hands. What is going down in Nice france to get the swat team out? Interesting So today I travel to Eze. A small town in between Nice and Monaco, with a medieval centre perched high above on its cliffs. I grab a train from Nice ville and take the 15 min ride to Eze. Once there I wait ... read more

The 24th , before having dinner in the evening with the newly-weds' friends and family, we all decided on traveling to Monaco. Personally, I would recommend everyone to skip visiting it, cause there's really nothing very special interesting to see. For the first time in my life, we took a touristy hop on hop off bus. This was not my idea, as it heavily violates the hypocritical division I make between tourists and travelers. I consideration myself a traveler, and those buses are for tourists! (Yet I know in the back of my head that I too am a tourist, but I like to forget that). However, my first experience with these buses was not a good one. After 5 minutes, I couldn't bare listening to the guide's voice anymore, as there was absolutely no interesting ... read more

So, I know I haven't been writing for a couple days, but I'll try to do some to get back on track. The 23nd, after an exhausting flight (delays, an hour waiting for the rental car and a blocked highway), it was wedding day. After getting up way too early to get ready and having breakfast outside in the warm french sun (with the very awesome view of the sea), we went to a lovely little church on a hill in Eze where the wedding ceremony would be held. The outside of the church was not that spectacular, yet the inside was. It was full of wonderful fresco's (and uncomfortable church benches, I would later discover). On the to the church, which was quite a climb on heels, we walked on a apparently medieval road with ... read more

Eze The Eze village is over a thousand feet above sea level. The bus ride over took us on the mountain round over looking the ocean, scenic in itself. Maybe it's the cloudy and chilly day, or maybe it's because Eze is such a commercialized village, we didn't think it was as nice as Saint Paul. The old town is perched on the mountain top, with houses all up and down the hill. I don't think anyone lives in the village, which takes away some of the interest. Still, it is a very photogenic village. Getting back to Nice in record time of 3:30pm, we head straight to Renee's Socca, somewhere we've been wanting to go for a while. Socca is a local food, chickpeas in a flour pancake. It was delicious, but not so ... read more
