Once upon a time, in a land not too far from here, there was a girl who wanted to travel the world... These are her tales...

Annency Last week (Yes, it's been that long since I wrote my last entry), the university had organized an excursion to Annency, a small town with a gorgeous lake surrounded by the Alphes, located 2 hours from Lyon. Although I must admit that the lake and the mountains surrounding it were absolutely stunning, I was slightly disappointed by the town itself, which was packed with tourists and tourist shops...not my favorite thing in the world. The part of Annency that is closest to the lake is filled with lovely old building and bridges, giving it a very romantic view. But then again, if you walk 5 streets further you see the normal part of Annency, which is not that interesting really. As I had enough of the pretty but typically touristy parts of town, I climbed ... read more

Last week was my birthday and I must admit that it was quite odd to celebrate that whilst not being around the people I have known for more than just 2 weeks!! Fortunately, skyping and calling with people from back home and all the birthday wishes I received both virtual and in real life, made me feel like I was not too far from home. My birthday actually started with a excursion with the summerschool to Perouges, a medieval village an hour from Lyon. Perouges is quite a lovely village, but very very small, and thus after walking around for 2 hours, you've seen everything about twice. However, that doesn't make the old building less lovely. Also, I tried some Galette, a local specialty that looks like a pizza slice but it's sprinkled with sugar, which ... read more

After trying to keep up a blog myself, I think I now understand why all the people I know who keep a blog have massive pauses in their blogwriting...there's simply always too much going on! Meanwhile, my big which-level-course-should-I-do-dillemma has been solved, with me deciding to stay in the class I'm in. I must admit, there are classes where I wonder why on earth I wanted to learn French, since the grammar is just horrible. Fortunately though, I am starting to understand more and more. By now, I have even done some first exams, and did pretty well on them! :) But, before writing more about the present, I think I have some catching up to do on the past 10 days... In these days, I have been visiting Vieux Lyon, the old part of Lyon. ... read more

It has been a couple days since I've written my last entry, but I'm back again! This past Monday, my summercourse started. I must admit, that this was quite a transition after my incredibly amazing weekend filled with amazing band performances (and learning what happens when you have a festival + rain). When I got back to rainy Lyon (yes, it does rain here!!) without the amazing company I had on the festival nor the great music, I was not looking forward to the next day. On this dreaded Monday, I had my placement test that would determine in which level I would be placed. I was very worried that I would not get the level I needed, but as it turns out, I actually did (too) well on my test and got placed in a ... read more

I'm back again and will be practicing my multitasking skills by writing this blog and cooking at the same time! So, to come back where I left off, after I had managed to get to Lyon by train the 26th, I had to continue my journey with bus that brought me to the address I was supposed to be at. Now, where I was expecting a mere apartment building in a suburban neighborhood, I was actually at a full grown campus location with lots of buildings and confusing roads. After dragging my suitcase and backpack around the entire campus, a nice English speaking student (HALLELUJAH!) showed me where I had to arrange all the paperwork and I finally could get into my room. My room and campus Fortunately, I have a room of my own with ... read more

After the exhausting late night dinners with the newly weds' friends and family, moi and my dear mom, aunt and uncle traveled to Nice by train. Surprisingly, although Eze is really not that big, getting to the station was quite a drive all the way down the mountains close to the sea side. Since I had to make reservations for my train to Lyon the next day and we all hated the hassle of parking a car in a big city like Nice, we figured going by by train would simply be easier. (And it had the bonus of me being able to practice my french on the french-only ticket machines) Fortunately, Nice is about 15 minutes by from Eze, so after a short ride in the incredibly comfy local trains we arrived in Nice. And, ... read more

So, the 26th, which was yesterday (or actually, the day before yesterday since it's past midnight by now), I arrived in lyon. This was quite an interesting journey, as it involved getting up at 6 in the morning and accidentally missing my train since I hadn't looked at the ticket and thought the guy making my reservation made one for a later train (Note to self, ALWAYS check not only that you have your tickets but also what is on them!). The good thing was that I got to travel first class later on in the TGV, which was awesome (so spacious!!!). Another time, I'll write more about getting to my room in a studenthousing complex and how I'm doing there, but for now I'm too tired and I just wanna sleep :) We shall meet ... read more

The 24th , before having dinner in the evening with the newly-weds' friends and family, we all decided on traveling to Monaco. Personally, I would recommend everyone to skip visiting it, cause there's really nothing very special interesting to see. For the first time in my life, we took a touristy hop on hop off bus. This was not my idea, as it heavily violates the hypocritical division I make between tourists and travelers. I consideration myself a traveler, and those buses are for tourists! (Yet I know in the back of my head that I too am a tourist, but I like to forget that). However, my first experience with these buses was not a good one. After 5 minutes, I couldn't bare listening to the guide's voice anymore, as there was absolutely no interesting ... read more

So, I know I haven't been writing for a couple days, but I'll try to do some to get back on track. The 23nd, after an exhausting flight (delays, an hour waiting for the rental car and a blocked highway), it was wedding day. After getting up way too early to get ready and having breakfast outside in the warm french sun (with the very awesome view of the sea), we went to a lovely little church on a hill in Eze where the wedding ceremony would be held. The outside of the church was not that spectacular, yet the inside was. It was full of wonderful fresco's (and uncomfortable church benches, I would later discover). On the to the church, which was quite a climb on heels, we walked on a apparently medieval road with ... read more

And here I am, writing my first travelblog entry ever in between learning French and completing that list of 100-things-I-still-need-to-do-before-I-leave. In about 20 hours, I'll be on a plane to FRANCE and I'll be staying there for no less than 5 weeks! Not that I'll be having one insanely long holiday there, not at all... In my university, every student has to learn a foreign language (and no, English or Dutch don't count) and I had the genious idea of picking French! But, since I lack the time to do all kinds of French courses during my semester, I figured France would be a pretty good place to learn the language. So, the entire month of July, I'll be studying French at the University of Lyon!! Magnifique! So, why on earth am I already going there ... read more
