We arrived at Mont Saint-Michel after spending the night in the quaint seaside village of Cabourg, France Cabourg is definitely worth a longer visit. But the main event for the day would be the Mont, and it did not disappoint. We began to see the vision of the Mont, 12 kilometers away as we left the highway and began the drive throught the coastal plains towards this magical island. All we could see was a misty image through the afternoon haze. It was just enough to whet ones appetite for what was coming. As we got closer, the apparition turned to reality and soon we found ourselves staring up at what is one of the most amazing sights I have ever been privileged to behold. It was many times larger than I expected and it was ... read more

Well my mom and grandmother came to visit me for two weeks! We started off with a week here in Rothenburg where I showed them my new digs. They actually happened to be here during R-burg's annual Mittelalter (Middle Ages) Festival. The whole town warps itself back in time. Everyone dresses up and wanders around doing activities like they would in the middle ages. There's food, drink, games, music, plays and demonstrations throughout the weekend. There is a reinactment óf the Meistertrunk (it's about 2 hours!). If you ever make your way out here I would def recommend going ahead and splurging the extra Euros to get a seat in the first section; it makes it a lot more enjoyable. The Meistertrunk is the name given to the event when a Swedish man by the name ... read more

While we were walking along the rampart, I stopped almost every meter to take photos. I did not think that it was a nuisance for any of us, but surely it was new to Monsieur X. We took a narrow road, the only road inside the wall, which was almost cramped with souvenir shops both sides of the road. While we stopped on top of the fortified wall, I was told the history behind the river by Monsieur X, which made this phenomenally great structure belonged to the region of Normandy. I noticed Monsieur X, gazing at far end of the river Coueson. It is running like a snake into the bay of Mont Saint Michel. Once we entered through the main gate, we had to wait in a long queue to buy two tickets. To ... read more

It was not possible for me to dream visiting Mont Saint Michel so soon. First time, I heard about this religiously significant monument in France on TF1 channel. It was about the week of celebration which marks anniversary of 1300 years old monastery. Even though I was so curious to know a lot about Mont Saint Michel, I restrained myself from finding out about the place. I talked less about visiting this place at that time, because it was impossible to arrange a trip within a short time during this year, which may take a better organisational work & skills. So I left the idea of visiting Mont Saint Michel at the back of my mind, a quiet far distance. It was a very hot week in Paris and Nanu decided to go to Bretagne as ... read more

Everyone said to me you must go see Mont St Michel in Normandy. I had seen pictures of it but they do it no justice. If my memory serves me correctly it was first started in the 900's. It was a Benedictine monastery and a fort for many battles throughout the centuries and was added to over the centuries but it was never defeated, the fortress was too strong.... read more

Our road trip started saturday morning. We rented a car from Hertz outside the train station. The guy there was really helpful and we ended up being able to get a 7 person van, originally we had two reservations for small cars. (They wanted 35 euros/day for a young driver charge, but luckily Evelina is 25.) We barely made it out of the tiny parking garage without harm, and we were quickly on our way. We went straight to Mount Saint Michele. The "interstates" here are just like at home. However, every five miles the advertisements of fast food restaurants and gas stations aren't thrown in your face. The only signs you see from the road are the ones that promote historical sites or towns. I first saw the abbey on the horizon, you are just ... read more
