We took a drive of the area, some really quaint houses and towns and beautiful forests. We spotted a castle on a mountaintop so drove up to find a huge beautifully restored castle to explore (for 8euro). After another swim we walked into town to the music festival I saw being set up earlier. A dozen or so bands scattered throughout the town. We arrived a little early (only 1 hour after the scheduled start time) but it eventually turned out to be a great night. On the side stairs of the church was a screaming doof doof band, and on the other side a funky French band. Opposite was a string and trumpet group, down the street a hippie band and some great teenage bands. There was even an Aboriginal influenced group with didgeridoos etc. ... read more

Rouffach; a small town in the Alsace area, in the north east of France. The area was once under German influence so it looks like Germany but the language is French. Once again the town is covered in bright flowers which I love. Oh oh, I don’t know how we are going to revert back to hostels after this. One of the few hotels on our itinerary and it has an indoor pool and spa and it’s so opulent. We’re all in need of a real swim. And it has a big deep bath. Glad they don’t have water restrictions. We arrived around 2pm and the town is like a ghost town, just like southern France and Italy they close up between 1-4pm. Not to worry we have some water to splash in. ... read more

We arrived at Constantin's parents' house late last night. I think it was around 2 when we got in. Finally, we were able to find lithium batteries for my camera this morning! The original plans were to see Strasbourg (Straßburg), but because of the large number of tourists on the weekend, we opted to go to Wissembourg (Weißenburg) instead. We had a full car today—Constantin, his parents, his grandmother, and me. They are all genuinely lovely people (myself, of course, included!). This was my fourth trip to Europe, and my fourth trip to France, but my first time in Alsace. Alsace is a German-speaking part of France and is also arguably more culturally German than French. I seem to have a proclivity toward the "Eldest Daughter of the Church," even though I don't have a drop ... read more

Dad and I are definitely getting better at this traveling-by-the-seat-of-our-pants thing. We are in the most beautiful place on earth. I won't write much, but let the pictures tell the story of our lovely day. We left St. Dizier and headed for Nancy, breezed through Nancy to what looked like a smaller town, Epinal. It was a bustling town, people everywhere. And it still had the ancient feel of so much of this region, but was obviously a modern city with an extensive shopping district and many museums. On our way out of town, I consulted "Betty" (Our GPS) for places of interest in the area and she pointed us toward a chateau. Outside the city were these remains of some castle that was virtually deserted. It had a park around it but no real explanation ... read more

Yesterday, I actually got kind of warm, enough to take my jacket off...this is a revelation! Summer is on its way and I am thrilled, except that it means that my time over here is almost over. The countdown is now at 2 months for my internship, 2 1/2 months until I am home in Austin, and 3 months until I am in Nashville. Crazy. Work is going well, and I am enjoying my project. It is also fun getting to know the 'German' way of working. There are some major differences here that I have noticed I thought I might share. 1. Most companies over here are more inclined to the non-cubicle/shared office layouts. This was new for me, as I am used to having my small (very small) privacy in a little grey cubicle. ... read more

I woke up early and took a train to Strasbourg, France. It was about a 6 hour train. From Marseille to Lyon, then Lyon to Strasbourg. Strasbourg is a touristy city but nice none the less. I was able to visit the Strasbourg Cathedral which is huge. Mark (who lived with us in Simi for a year as a German exchange student) and his buddy came to pick me up in Strasbourg and take me to Freiburg. In Freibug, I spent the weekend with Mark and his parents. I was able to speak with his dad in French which was great. They took me on a scenic drive of Freiburg and a hike to the top of a local mountain with a great view. Mark also took me brewery hopping and beer tasting. Mark and his ... read more

I guess this one's just for me, really. As the last few hours are slipping away I find myself hanging on tightly to those things that have stood out above everything else here in Strasbourg; favourite restaurants, cafés, beautiful walking spots. In the name of keeping my memories alive I have taken photos of all my favourite places in Strasbourg so as to never forget those small things that captured my heart, and that I will miss more than I could have ever imagined. It's a strange feeling to know that I will never again be at this desk, writing a blog, looking out my widow to see white Alsacian houses with wooden details and pointed rooves, reminding me that I am far, far away from home. Not for a very long time will I hear ... read more

Merry Christmas to everyone that I haven't yet had the chance to contact, I hope you had a fantastic day! Once again, the Australians came together to celebrate the festivities by having an "orphans Christmas" for all of us still in Strasbourg. Although, calling it an orphans Christmas doesn't seem as fitting as it did earlier in the year when we planned it, because we've all spent so much time together this year they're starting to feel like family anyway. As with so many other food nights we've had this year, everyone prepared a couple of dishes themselves and brought them to share, making, as always, way too much food. But it was fantastic, we had such a large variety of things to choose from, even sushi! We stuffed ourselves silly, drank too much wine, laughed ... read more

Well, it's official, the countdown has begun. Two months from now I'll be arriving back in Australia. I'm so torn between being excited to get back, earning money again and finishing my degree, and being incredibly sad to be leaving this beautiful city that has so quickly become my home. I keep trying to tell myself that two months is still a long time, but my subconsciousness is already preparing. I'm having dreams about being back in Australia and waking up a bit panicky, then realising with relief that I'm still here. I guess the best thing about going home is the fact that it'll be nice and hot in January. It's starting to get so cold here, and it gets dark so early. Most days I don't leave home without a scarf, and the gloves ... read more
