If It were possible to choose various countries and regions for this entry I certainly would... but alas. I have belatedly decided to start a blog, to keep people friends and family updated on my life and keep track of what I have done and where I have been, which has already taken up a good chunk of my old-fashioned hand-written journal. I will try to condense it here. Strasbourg I have been in France for over two months now and have taking advantage of every opportunity to travel and see more of Europe. I live in Strasbourg, Alsace which is a gorgeous city. If you are travelling in Europe, add it to your list. I believe it to be underrated, but that may just be the egoism of a foster- strasbourgeoise talking! The main reason ... read more

16th October 2007 - Strasbourg We took a walk around the city in the general direction of the Botanical Gardens, following the river Ill. Never made it to the gardens, but enjoyed the walk anyway. Had to try to get back to the main Cathedral before midday to meet Al and Melissa so we could get and see the astronomical clock do it’s stuff. Strasbourg is a lovely city, had to laugh at the sign on the banks of the river at a café with deck chairs set out in the sun - Strasbourg Plage (Sans la Plage), the Strasbourg Beach (Without the beach). The clock is a wonder to watch and midday and midnight are naturally the best time to view it do the business. There is a parade of figures and sounds supposedly set ... read more

14th October 2007 - The Feast of Saint Gall An interesting morning - attended a Catholic church service for the first time in many years. It was the feast of Saint Gall, one of the two Patron Saints of Niedermorschwihr. The feast was in celebration of the recent harvest and was a big celebration and family event. We attended the service out of respect for Beatrice and also Bernard (one of Beatrice’s cousins, who was also staying with them who happens to be a Priest). So, together with the family members who were at home at the time we attended the local church at 10am and amazing as it may seem the roof did not collapse when I entered. The service was enjoyable and interesting, the choir and the organ sounded wonderful, the display of produce ... read more

13th October 2007 - Colmar in search of a TV Juliette, Lorenza, Al, Jean and I climbed into the green bus and headed to Colmar. Our mission was to buy a plasma TV. Jean had been promised one for his 70th birthday and today seemed like a good day to get one because in the evening the French were to play the “Roast Beef” in the Rugby semi-final. Juliette and I joked that it was a bit like a day out in an episode from the Simpson’s, the whole family off shopping for a new TV. Melissa didn’t join us for the excursion; instead she was taken by Beatrice to a hairdresser for some colour touching up. This was a brave objective when your grasp of French is reasonably limited. We wished her luck! After studying ... read more

11th October 2007 We had hoped that we would be in Alsace in time to help with the grape harvest. Alas, this year the harvest was about a month earlier than normal. This was due to some freakish weather in about April, when an Indian summer burst on the scene resulting in the vines producing their fruit much earlier. Then, the region was hit by a hail storm, wiping out about 40% of the crop. So, by the time we arrived in Alsace the harvest was well and truly over, except for a few rows of vines which had fruited a bit later than the others. We spent about 2 hours picking roughly 100kg of grapes and that was that. Jean and Beatrice lent us their Peugeot 205 and we set about re-exploring the district, starting ... read more

I can't believe I was dreading going back to uni! I had so much fun during the summer holidays that I didn't want them to end, but now that I’m back at uni I’m really enjoying myself and am glad to be back. Although it was great spending lazy days wandering around Strasbourg and occasionally popping off to different European cities, having a schedule to follow once again is actually a welcome change. It’s making me feel like I have a purpose in life again! This semester is a lot more intense than the previous one because this time round, instead of taking mostly classes for foreigners, I’m in with the French students taking real university courses. I took one course for French students last semester but I was so frightened I’d rock up to class ... read more

My journey from Tampere to London was an arduous one. The flight was around 2 hours and 40 minutes long. After half an hour going through immigration (things would be so much easier with an EU passport) and baggage pick up, the bus from London Stansted Airport to Victoria Station was 70 minutes and then after waiting 20 minutes for the night bus, it took a further 25 minutes to get to Nicola's flat in Ladbroke Grove. I finally arrived at the flat at 3am - which would've been 5am Finnish time. So as you can imagine, I was absolutely exhausted. The next two days were spent sleeping and on my laptop - reloading my iPod (yay!) and catching up on blog entries and emails. Then on September 28th, it was back on the road (or ... read more

Although technically there are a few weeks left, it seems as though summer is well and truly over. The leaves on the trees are starting to change colour, we haven’t had a warm day in weeks, and it’s starting to rain more and more. And even though I did spend quite some time travelling around during the summer holidays, it was nice to be able to come back “home” to Strasbourg in between travels and enjoy this city during the warmer months. Unfortunately for the Strasbourgois who decide to stay in Strasbourg for summer, there is a sense when you’re here that you are one of the ones left behind. So many shops and restaurants shorten their opening hours during the summer months due to the lack of trade, and some close completely until the end ... read more

August 29, 2007 I Live to Eat My Words I know we all eat our words from time to time. I just hate it when it happens to me. Before I left the US I know that I told anyone and everyone (my mom, my sister, Kim, Judi, Becky, Kathy d, Dave and Laura, Pete and Katherine, and dozens at PPMM) that while we were traveling on a budget that “I would never stay in a youth hostel, I was too old for that.” Well, we just spent three days in Interlaken, Switzerland…in a youth hostel. We live to tell…and we may not have been the oldest people there. (second and third but not first!!) After the Lucca experience, while at the Farm we made a reservation for our time in Switzerland. We also needed to ... read more
