We hoped for early check-in, but no such luck. However, the front desk treated us very nicely, and we used the water bus to tour the canals, eat at a sidewalk cafe on a canal (the famous open face sandwiches are definitely all they are cracked up to be), and walk a bit on the main pedestrian shopping street before getting into our room. Of course, we are now the walking dead (zombies). And we must be off to the airport by 5 a.m. tomorrow to catch the flight to Bergen and meet up with the Choral Guild. ... read more

a warm hello to everyone from way up north. =) i am in denmark and have officially started classes. i was in london for a few days before arriving here and had an amazing time. my professor hooked lisa and i up with a place to stay. we were very lucky to stay at such a beautiful place and pay almost nothing. my initial arrival in london was kinda confusing. we were able to take the express train from the airport, then get on the tube (underground train) and finally get off in the area my prof had told us to. from there, we got lost. after walking for about 20 minutes with a medium-sized suitcase, a daypack, and a backpack it was just a sign of things to come as far as the walking and ... read more

Hej med dig. Hvordan går det? Pictures included here and for all entries backwards to mid-May (where I still haven't gotten those from my dead camera). Travel update: I've been in and around the Copenhagen area (staying in Nivå) and will leave on the train tomorrow (June 8th) to Berlin (the train itself boards a ferry!). In Berlin, I'll meet Dr. NoJoke and perhaps a German friend from UBC named Frank who will also be in town. I'll be there to watch Germany for the 3rd place game and then will be at the Fan Fest in Berlin for the final on the 9th. On the 10th, I'll travel to meet Ute in Minden and it appears as if I'll be staying there until I fly to Vancouver at noon from Frankfurt on the 13th. I'll ... read more

Background Thinking back, this is essentially where this travel blog begins, at least for me. The blog's original focus was to be on the nine months or so of floating about the US, the Caribbean, and for the most part, Latin America - but the real picture would then be incomplete. I had earlier in the year (of 2006) finished a secondment from a British company to develop software for a Danish company (the customer being a well-known Korean mobile phone company - business trips and Kareoke included). But that job was only temporary and used to pay for a Big Trip to Somewhere after having completed, in 2005, a thing called an EngD via University College London; that took me six years whilst holding down a full-time job or two, so I was burning for ... read more

Well we just got back from a 10 hour drive back from Sorø, Denmark. I saw the sun set…well kind of as it does not truly get dark here….more like dusky all night…and then I saw it rise…..lets just say my enthusiasm was not as strong on the rising as it was on the falling. I was very tired indeed. Esther and I were delirious as we had left at 6pm and arrived back at 4am…driving the whole way through…….the following is a summary of the entire trip from Norway….Sweden….to Denmark. Esther and I left very early on the Friday morning to drive the trailer of boats to the regatta. This was my first time driving a trailer and it was seriously full of boats. Besides some minor skill lacking in downshifting from fifth to fourth….I ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681Hurray the Weather is 30 degrees here this week - otherwise its like home in summer, but it was cool the Irish people have a great balcony & are our neighbours so spent about 9 hours sitting out & drinking on Saturday. Otherwise June was all work & all world cup. Work was mad as we had a 'go-live' (i.e. loads new software in production) but at least I can get massages in work regularly (a physio comes in - lovely girl called Eva ). Have been for a few pedicures, hot stone massages, wraps etc. in the local 5 star hotel too - mainly cause they can talk english & take international credit cards. The have the 'dkk card' here that's like our laser only it's attached to the visa card & not ... read more

Hej. No pics now but soon as I have some cool ones from Croatia (did I mention I love Croatia?) I'll be able to put up on Monday or Tuesday, after going to Roskilde Festival on Sunday to see my friend Thor and also The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand. After several years, I've made it back in Denmark meeting my host family and Birgitte. So far it's just been all about catching up and watching the quarterfinals inbetween. It is nice being in the only place in the world where I can practice my (poor) Danish. Travel update: Last I wrote I had just arrived to Zagreb. Since, I spent a handful of days in Krezevci, Zvonimir's hometown NE of Zagreb an hour where I met the infamous 50+ parrot collection of his father. From there ... read more

First, I don't have time to spell check these entries so don't expect anything worthy of a novel in this blog. Frankly, I wouldn't expect anything at all if I were you so that whatever you read here will exceed your wildest dreams. Lets keep the bar low here everyone... This trip is scheduled to take me from Seattle - Copehagen - Finland - Italy - and then back to Seattle. Today was the first leg of the trip: Seattle to Finland by way of Copehagen. My flight was scheduled to leave Seattle at 6:55PM and I arrived at the aiport 90 minutes prior to the departure time. Yes, yes, I know "they" tell you to arrive at the airport 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic flight but that's only ... read more

Day 50: Week 8: Sunday 25th. June 2006: Rainy: With a place so quiet one becomes very aware of the music coming from the wheels of cases as they trundle along uneven ground and pavements, moreso when one is walking to the train at an early time on a Sunday morning. A stroll through the mall before boarding the "fast" train though it still took 7 hours as the tracks buckle at 20C. We met some pleasant people on the train but unfortunately we were in a smokers carriage no other choice and by the time we got to Copenhagen we literally reeked of smoke. So many people smoke here, even at the hostel. The hostel was a fair way out of town, quite nice and not too far from transport. We went into town ... read more
