Cerveny Ujezd is located about fifteen to twenty miles west of Prague and is surrounded by rolling hills of farmland. Oil rapeseed is in full-bloom this time of year making the countryside a patchwork of bright yellow and green. The green is growing wheat and the yellow is the flowering rapeseed. If rapeseed is not the brightest yellow blossom in nature I am not sure what is brighter. The bright yellow of flowering rape and fields of green wheat growing always make me think of Brazil and the Brazilian flag. I would think any Brazilian traveling through the Czech Republic this time of year would be delighted. Cerveny Ujezd advertises itself as a castle. On their web site they use the terms Hrad Ceveny Ujezd. Hrad is Czech for castle. The layout is like a castle. ... read more

Today we coughed up for a walking tour around Prague * started at the Old Town square where the famous astronomical clock is * took a boat ride on the river * wandered through the Jewish Quarter where there was Jewish Ghetto setup in about the 14th century (I thought it was Hitler's idea) and saw where the legend of Golem originated and the synagogue where it is buried in the attic * walked across Charles Bridge, gave some statue a rub for luck * caught a tram up the hill where Prague Castle is situated * had lunch in a little restaurant * had a look around Prague castle, big and pretty spectacular * had dinner in a restaurant in Wencelas Square and bought some souvenirs ... read more

I am getting ready to strap the pack on one more time and catch a train from Prague to Munich. If it weren't for my eurrail expiring tomorrow, I would stay in Prague longer and this will definitely be a city that I return to in the future. Its really hard to believe that less than 70 years ago this place was knee deep in communism and the second World War. The culture that is present here rivals any "Western" European city. (Prague is actually futher west than Vienna). I only got to spend one full day in the city but I covered a lot of distance in that day seeing the Prague Castle, the Karlov Most (Charles Bridge), the Old Town Square with the astronmical clock (chimes on the hour and little figures come out ... read more

Left Berlin and headed for Prague. Had lunch at Dresden - this place was totalled during WW2 and they have rebuilt the old buildings without cleaning up the original workk so you can see the damage that was done. Got to Czech border, had to get the passports out for a stampin. A few kms over the border there were these little huts with big windows, a closer look showed that there were some ladies sitting there waiting for some business (weird, it was the middle of nowhere) and one place had them dancing outside right near the road. Made it to Prague, had a bohemian dinner at the hotel, hotel was good because it had a kids area near the bar and kept Michael busy while Mum and Dad unwound with a few quiet ones. ... read more

We went to the zoo here in Prague today. We knew approximately where it was located, but not the exact location. We also knew that we could not get there by tram or by subway, that we would have to change from the subway to a bus. We took the subway with no problem. But at first we could not find the bus stop. Just outside one of the entrances to the subway there were long distance busses, but we knew a drive of a mile or two was not on their schedule. Finally we found the bus, number 112. As we approached the bus the driver opened the door and I climbed in showing him my ticket. He said something to me in Czech and pointed off to his right. So, I stepped down off ... read more

Just arrived in Prague today after a very sad good bye to Blair and ALyssa who are headed to Dacchau and then Ireland and Scotland. Good thing for free Internet or I would still be crying my little eyes out because I miss em so much... Our last few days travelling together were in two of the neatest towns--Gimmelwald, Switzerland and Rothenburg, Germany. We stayed two (way too short) nights in Gimmelwald, Switzerland, and old garming town nestled in the Swiss Alps just below Jungfrau, one of the highest peaks in Switzerland. The town is just 200 people and there are only 3 different families that reside in the town. In order to get there we took a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and then a gondola from Lauterbrunnen a thousand feet straight up into the ... read more

This morning we took a three-hour bus ride out of Prague to Brno, Czech Republic. None of us really had any idea what was in Brno or why we were going there—we were just along for the ride. We arrived about midday and much of the group decided to nap. However, several of us opted to walk into the center of town and see what Brno was all about. On our walk, I discovered that this was the town where Gregor Mendel did his experiments with the genetics of pea plants. A sign in front of his museum indicated that our lack of knowledge about this city was not a function of its non-importance but rather our own ignorance. But I guess if we knew it all, there would be no point in traveling. Dr. Crabb ... read more

Aunt Gerry isn't kidding... Prague is absolutely AMAZING! Phuong and I are officially in love with this city, and we're taking an extra day to make sure we see everything we want. There are some new, funky buildings, like the Dancing Building, but our favorites are the older buildings adorned with fantastic and intricate statues. Between the Charles Bridge and the buildings surrounding it, I've decided that I'm quite surprised how strong the religious influence is (I didn't expect it to be so since the country was communist for a period of time). There are buildings with depictions of the pope, others with angels, and some with apostles. The Charles Bridge has statues of Jesus and other Christian figures. Oddly, there are buildings that seem to show statues of Roman soldiers. It is just all ... read more

Today was a pretty long day. We had classes until 5. So first we had our art history class in which we visited a castle, the Charles Bridge, the Baroque Gardens and St. Nicolas' Church. All these places were quite nice but after all that walking I had to find something to eat. So we ate at the university cafeteria which has good, cheap food. Then in our history class we went the Vysehrad castle. It was nice. It was surrounded by tombstones and this really beautiful park which I found wierd and interesting. Then on our way back home I needed to get some money exchanged and so I went and then I realized that the library was nearby so I decided to go sit in the Prague public library and study. It was nice. ... read more
