David taught English here this year. That was his official job, but he did much more. He worked many, many hours in the library shelving books and working on any task he was given. He also put in many hours working with students, reading their papers and helping with their grammer and spelling. A fellow with a heart of gold he was always willing to help where needed. David will spend the summer working in England or Wales, he was not sure yet and then next September will return to the Czech Republic and will teach English as a university in the extreme north of the Czech Republic. ... read more

We had a slow start. My flight from Las Vegas to Chicago was delayed and I missed my Munich connection. Good news was that my good friends Mary and Fred Garzino came to the rescue and gave me a bed for the night as well as dinner and a good visit. Arrived in Munich Sunday to pouring rain. Has been cold and raining in varying degrees ever since, but have still been able to see the sights and do some biking. The RV is small, but that makes it easier to drive. Tight space, but lots of storage and has everything we need. We have camped alternately in very well maintained campgrounds or in gas station/rest stops on the highway. This is acceptable in Europe. Bought bikes in Munich and went to the Hofbrauhaus in honor ... read more

I left for the train station with a lighter but still too heavy pack. A reminder to all of you planning--go light because you can buy anything you need where you are going and you'll probably want to anyway. The train station was at L'Gare Est metro stop which has many levels but not an elevator to be found. The train left on time about 5:00 PM with a scheduled change in Frankfurt. The first half of the trip was pleasant as I found a big window seat with no one across so I could stretch out. There was a cute German girl who spoke excellent English because she's spent a year in high school in Wisconsin. Another woman was from Chile. She was also going on to Prague and had a tiny little back pack--like ... read more

Hi all, Well we have finished our 4 days in Prague and are now in a lovely little town surrounded by a river and medievel buildings called Ceske Krumlov, about 3 hours south of Prague. The bummer is we have hit an unseasonably cold patch, and it has been about 7 degrees and raining off and on. The place is still beautiful and we are having a really nice time relaxing after the hustle and bustle of Prague. We will be here until the 4th, when we head off to Vienna for 2 nights for our wedding anniversary (very exciting!). Anyway onto Prague.... As Paul said in his last blog the first day we were there was pretty full on with all the tourists (and not even high season), but in hindsight it was really good ... read more

Last year, this year and I suppose every year this is a time of happiness, excitement and sadness. This is the time of year for students to graduate and leave. This is a time of parting, a time of ending and a beginning. Nancy and I know that this coming week will be the last time we will see many if not all of the wonderful young people we have come to know and love during our stay here. These young people who will scatter to such far distant places, Siberia, Serbia, Hungary, the Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Israel, Macedonia, Estonia, Moldavia and other far distant places. We also know that we may never have the opportunity to live here again. If anything the future is an unknown and nothing, regardless of our wishes, is assured. ... read more

Prague, Czech Republic: Prague, or Praha as it is called locally, is by far the most beautiful and fascinating city we have seen on our trip thus far. The architecture and many of the buildings date back to the 13th and 14th century, and most of the “newer” buildings are at least 100 years old. Our hotel is about 15 minutes away from the city, in an area that looks more like Ukraine or Romania than Prague, but it is a very nice hotel. Our first full day we did our usual practice of going on an all-in-on inclusive overview tour of the city, which has proved successful so far. So we started our tour in the famous Wenceslas Square in front of the massive National Museum. The tour lasted about 6 hours, during which we ... read more

I'm posting a lot of pictures of Prague because the architecture made it a really beautiful city to photograph. I'd read about how Prague hadn't suffered much damage during World War II, so the city was a mix of different periods from Barogue to Renaissance to Gothic. But walking through the city, it's not like you look at a building and think, "Wow, what an interesting piece of Gothic construction, how fascinating that it's right next to a Renaissance church." Because I really couldn't tell you what style I was looking at or when it was built. I just know there were a lot of cool ornate buildings and old churches. Seven years ago when I was in Europe I heard about how cheap the Czech Republic was, with beers for 25 cents. It's not as ... read more

Day 50: May 25 - AUSTRIA - Vienna, CZECH REPUBLIC - Prague Accommodation: Hotel Patanka, Prague Our time in Austria was at an end, so we all got back on the bus with our bags and we were off again for another day to be spent mostly on the road. I was thankful of the bus driver's mandatory stops every 2 or 3 hours because I certainly needed them today after last night's effort. The most memorable stop was at the Czech Republic border. Travelling over road borders from France to Italy to Austria we drove straight through without much realisation of the fact as these were European Union countries who no longer required border stops, however the Czech Republic was only a recent addition to the EU and had not yet abolished their border control ... read more
