1.Did you know that there is a interesting connection between the tradition of the island of Krk and the number 7? For example, the 7th century, when Croats joined the Illyrian tribes of Liburnians and Japods, presents a real historical turning point. This is only one example for the significance of the number „seven“, here are some other: Krk was historically divided into seven castles (kastel) that nowadays present 7 districts. And these are: Omisalj, Malinska, Vrbnik, Dobrinj, Punat i Baska. 2.Did you know that the Romans, upon their arrival, found already developed town and implemented their buildings into the existing ones, keeping the old lay out? Today’s walls are mainly from the Middle Ages, and sections next to the Franciscan Monastery, castle and the coast date from the times of the times of Roman settlement. ... read more

The comments on the website when we booked our accommodation at Sv Petar did include someone writing that the traffic noise from the main road was excessive. And they weren’t wrong.!!Had we had an apartment closer to the water it may have been different. The traffic volume did decrease as the evening went on but the cars and trucks seemed to go faster. The settlement we are staying in is in the process of development and as yet there aren’t any traffic signs to slow the speed of the cars and buses passing to and fro on the main road. A bonus here was that we had a frypan and a egg slice so Gretchen could have her favourite poached eggs.Everything went well until it was time to get the eggs out and then the egg slice ... read more

1.The small island of Košljun (near Krk) is located in the Punat Bay, 800 m away from Punat. Its range is slightly bigger than one thousand meters and the vegetation is exuberant. The highest point is at 6 meters above the sea. There are 540 species of plants and mushrooms registered in this area and there are no lizards and snakes on the island. 2.Košljun is dominated by the Franciscan monastery. The world’s smallest Bible is one of the items displayed in the museum. Its surface is one square centimetre. 3.There is a legend on how Košljun came to being - a long time ago this area was not covered with the sea; it was a field owned by brothers and one of those brothers was blind. They worked together on the land. During the division ... read more

After 3 weeks of being in big cities and urban life, we took a vacation from our vacation and headed to what we are sure is one of the most beautiful islands in the world...... Krk, an island in Croatia. This seemed to be a popular vacation destination for Croatians, Italians and Germans. It was no easy task to get to the island. 10 hours on the train, a 2 mile hike up hill, followed by 2 hours on a bus, with just enough energy and daylight left over to look out the window and see the Adriatic Sea, surrounding by cliffs on all sides. It made the long day of travel well worth it! Our 5 days in Baska (the name of the town that we were in) were very relaxing as island life should ... read more

Thursday 11th June Got up and got bikes ready to go to Supermarket - Steve had a flat tyre - new inner tube had a faulty valve so we had to walk the bikes in to town - the supermarket on camp was closed for some reason - a reason which became apparent when going to all the other supermarkets in town - who were also shut ! Someone is conspiring against us saving any money. We then saw a gathering of people singing hymns and it turns out today is a national holiday in Croatia for Corpus Christi - for those non catholics amongst us that is a mass and a ceremonial procession. where the attendants carry the body of Christ. The procession has four stations at which they announce the gospels at four ends ... read more

Well, after a very relaxing and hot week on Korcula, on Sunday it was time to pack up the tent and head for the ferry terminal, to catch the Marco Polo to Rijeka, and then on to Krk Island, in the north of Croatia. We got on the ferry ok, and as we had a cabin, we got the VIP treatment, escorted to our cabin, and we thought we were in for something special on this overnight ferry, maybe a last bastion of old-fashioned service and quality, in an age of fast food and faster service? Alas, it was not to be - as the journey progressed, it became clear that like most ferries I’ve been on, the service provided seems to be offered on the basis that you’re on a boat, you can’t eat or ... read more
