On Tuesday I took the bus from Budva to Dubrovnik, where I stayed for one night. Once again I stayed in a hostel located within the walls of the Old Town, which was really convenient for making the most of my short stay. Dubrovnik's Old Town is a lot bigger than those in Kotor or Budva: while both those Old Towns are so small that a visitor quickly becomes familiar with the whole layout, Dubrovnik's is just big enough that one can wander through charming, unfrequented back alleys. However, Dubrovnik is visibly a lot more commercialized and touristic than either of the Montenegrin towns I visited: its main boulevards are perpetually packed with tourists from all over the world (British, American, German, Canadian, Japanese, Korean, French, Russian...) and the streets are lined with classy restaurants and ... read more

Dubrovnik What an amazing little place. It really is the jewel in the crown for Croatia. Nestled right in the the bottom cornier of Croatia it sits on a tiny peninsula looking out over the Adriatic. It is just like it looks in all the pictures. On arrival it was soon very apparent that parking was going to be an issue. Most visitors either come by plane or boat. As we were staying inside the wall of the city we needed to be close as we didn't want to be dragging our bags for miles. After going round the one way streets about 4 times we did mange to find a park. We then had to race off to the main entrance and then follow the instructions on the map to find the apartment. It proved ... read more

We set off early as we were not really sure how long it would take us. Once again we avoided the toll roads and went up the coast road to Trieste. What a lovely trip. Northern Italy is packed with industry and farms. Not an inch of land is left uncultivated. Once more you could see our all the little family farms had gone to be taken over by industry or larger farming operations. The place is littered with abandoned farm buildings. The Italian farmers no longer keep animals. In fact apart from one small housed diary farmed I didn't see a single animal anywhere. And for that matter no cats. The Italian, like that French are mad on their dogs. I think dogs come before children. That has been one of the hardest things to ... read more

From Vienna to Krka From 25th April to 11th May Is there anything as good as the first gulp of cold beer when the sun is shining? Some would argue that you don’t even need the sun to be shining, and to be honest I do agree, but then that is not ice cold larger I’d be consuming. Today it is, and with good reason. 2 days ago there were storms that swept tents away, today it is roasting hot, and the beautiful blue skies are dotted with the odd high cloud that don’t threaten anything like rain. The west coast of Croatia is beautiful. One of the nicest places I’ve found so far, and very different to where I left off the last time which was Vienna. So going back to the 25th April, I ... read more

Sunday, April 24th 2011, was one special day for us. Not only that Kiki turned 28 on that day, but also it was Easter, that of course was followed by the Easter Monday, a national holiday, left us with a long weekend. We had decided to visit Dubrovnik for that, which was a decision we had made quite a while ago, when we accidentally found a very good offer for flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik for less than 40 Euro one way for each. Kiki has a colleague in Dubrovnik who kindly offered us her flat for us to stay in, so we didn’t even think twice to go. We flew from Zagreb on Friday evening after work, and our flight was delayed for half an hour, making us reaching Dubrovnik quite late because of the ... read more

Excited anticipation for my upcoming trip. In 2008 my sister and I took our Mom on a cruise in the Mediterranean taking off from Venice, Italy and going down the coast visiting Greece and Croatia. One day during our cruise we had over four hours visiting the Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia. I fell in love with the town and with the well kept buildings that had their red tiled roofs repaired after their recent war in 1991. The people I met were all so happy that we had come to visit them and went out of their way to make us feel at home. My sister and I walked around the old wall which encompassed the entire Old Town of Dubrovnik and is approximately 2kms in distance. The day was sunny and warm with the ... read more

Thursday (26/8/2010) We started our Croatian leg of the journey considerably later and slower then planned and with stinking hangovers. We headed to the beach for a swim with Rory. It was a beautiful warm morning, cloudless blue skies, crystal clear warm (enough) water. After our swim Rory headed back to catch a ferry to one of the islands and we chilled out on the pebble beach making the most of the sun. We grabbed some lunch and headed back for a quick change before we ventured into the old town. Not accustomed to the heat (and starting to wonder how we would survive our first summer back in Australia.. nothing to do with the hangover) we took the bus into the Old Town. First stop was ice cream from Dubrovnik’s original ice creamery.. delicious. We ... read more

Saturday (28/8/2010) Our host dropped us down to the Port and pointed us in the direction of the passenger ferry, (as it turned out it was quicker and cheaper than the car ferry). We joined the growing queue happy not to be one of the late ones turned away and got a couple one way tickets to the Island of Mljet (as recommended by KB and Sas). We arrived at Mljet a couple hours later and took one of the local touts offers of a cheap apartment just 500m from the port. We got lunch supplies whilst the prepared our apartment and enjoyed our salad rolls in the sun of our balcony. Afterward's we hired some bikes and set off into the National Park to Mljet's famous lakes. After a steep climb and a couple consultations ... read more

Monday (30/8/2010) After an unplanned sleep in we packed up our gear and returned to the port for the ferry to Korcula (A larger island about an hour from Mljet). Winging the accommodation again we were greeted by a mob of touts with rooms and apartments. We took up Mr Simioni offer (a passionate Croation man) with a beautiful apartment right in the center of town. We got some lunch and went to explore the town just missing the bus to Normandy beaches opting for a swim where we were instead. The water was freezing in comparison to Mljet hence the swim was short lived and we snoozed in the sun. As the sun began its descent it cooled off so we headed back to the apartment for a warm shower, booked some flights and made ... read more
