Hi everybody, LAst night we went to my FIRST ever Professional Soccer game. The Team from Split is called Hajduk and they played Dinamo from Zagreb. This is the Biggest game for the whole Country. It's the Biggest city ( Zagreb ) playing the second biggest city ( Split ).. Let me tell you I have Never experienced anything like that before in my whole life. The Fans are the craziest thing I have EVER seen. They are SOOOOOO PAssionate about their team. When the other team started to get close to scoring, They would light flares and that would cause Smoke to cover the whole field so it would confuse the other other team. You couldn't see ANYTHING.... The other thing I found ironic about it is, The teams Nickname is the " White Boys ... read more

Dubrovnik in croatia was awesome. We had beautiful weather and spent a lot of time on the beach for the first time on our trip. We also did a boat cruise and got to jump off the boat into the beautiful ocean and eat lots of seafood. After Dubrovnik we headed to Zadar via Split which were all as beautiful. Next stop was Ljubliana which was surprisingly really cool. We also had our first hotel room since doing Contiki so loved that. Next was our final destination Italy, starting with Venice. Venice was great and we saw a lace making demonstration, glass blowing demonstration and cruised around canals on a gondola ride in style. We had yummy wine and bellini. We then headed to Florence where we saw a leather making demonstration (well there was no ... read more

And there is a place in Nakovana where treasure is buried, and they say that this treasure will be discovered if John and Mary go together and when the rooster crows at the 11th hour, they should gather what is before them and that will be the treasure. And they arranged for it once, and they went, but they fell asleep, so that they heard neither the 11th hour nor the rooster - Peljesac Folk Tale As it happens, a friend of mine called Dave has family connections to some land in 'Nakovana', a village somewhere far off the beaten track in Croatia, population 4. Here, a few years ago, some scientists discovered an ancient Illyrian Cave - Spila Nakovana - with perfectly preserved artifacts from thousands of years ago (treasure?). Knowing not much more than ... read more

I joined Lara on a trip that started by driving down the length of the Adriatic coast of Croatia. We spent our first night in Zadar, with its many churches, before driving on to Split. In Split, we explored the old town, which is mostly built in the remains of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace! To get a view over the city, we climbed up Marjan hill, where I had my photo taken with Lara before running to catch the bus to Dubrovnik. The next day, we walked the city walls of Dubrovnik to get some lovely views over the city. We found a peaceful spot overlooking the walled city to eat our picnic lunch before trying to ride the cable car up to the top of the hill behind Dubrovnik, but our plan was thwarted ... read more

Geo: 43.5127, 16.4424The traveler invariably sees and experiences the same things, over and over. It could be a feeling, or a situation, or encountering a certain type of person. Some of these things are less than desirable, but some of are most welcome, no matter how many times you come across them. And what type of things do I enjoy coming across, time and time again, never tiring of them, no matter how many times I seek them out? That would be Spanish senoritas! My morning, my day, and my week were made when I crawled out of bed, gathered my towel and soap, and went for a shower. The bathroom was occupied, and it was then that I noticed somebody else was also waiting, and having a seat on the couch in the living area. ... read more

Sorry I have not updated for a while. We had no wireless access in Rome or Ancona and since we got to Croatia yesterday I have been too chilled to type. Blog entrys for the last day in Naples when we took a trip to Sorrento and the three days in Rome will follow. I just need to find the draft documents that are stored somewhere on Nat's netbook (how I held down a job using a computer every day for 9 years is beyond me!) So after two and a half weeks of travelling accross Europe, we arrived in Croatia on the ferry from Italy yesterday afternoon. The ferry journey was 5 hours and I was sea sick for most of it. We had good seats and took a stroll up on the top deck ... read more

It's been so hot around here that even the palest of white people are starting to resemble me. To remedy this utterly unacceptable situation, I decided to head to the coast and get seriously working on my tan. So, here I am, sporting bug-eyed sunglasses, slowly sipping on my martini, lazily wading around the turquoise water off the Dalmatian Coast .... ok, not quite, but if you're heading this way, that is what YOU should be doing :) In yet another attempt to save on accomodations, I booked a room outside of the old town. My difficulties in discerning distance or topography off of google maps meant that I didn't discover exactly HOW far out of town it would be until I embarked on my fun-filled uphill climb from the bus station....with my luggage... in the ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948Many, many times I have been asked why Croatia is so special, why I love it so much, and why I have wanted to return for the past four years. Many still remember the wars in Yugoslavia, but haven't dissociated the time frame from the horrific images we all witnessed on television. Nearly 15 long years have passed ... while physical scars still dot the landscape, it's the psychological scars that will continue to haunt the people for years to come. While still paying all the respect that such horrific moments in history deserve, forget about such human ugliness, and see the natural beauty here. Realize that beyond the beauty, there is also something different, something nearly undefinable, that makes this country so incredible. It's a certain feeling that Croatia imprints upon your soul - ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948So sad to be leaving Kotor ... I've fallen in love with Montenegro. As much as I enjoyed Budva's tackiness, it was really it's proximity to more beautiful sights that made it such a great experience. And the Bay of Kotor is the most majestic sight in all of Montenegro, at least from what I have seen of it - and for all my travels, Kotor is one of the most beautiful places I have seen anywhere. It's tough to describe, and the photos simply don't do it any justice; the beauty of this region is a confluence of many beautiful things, culminating in something that takes away your breath and leaves you speechless. I don't use such words lightly - in the past, that's how I've described Spanish women, so if I make ... read more
